For a single finished illustration, a fast blockout followed by selective 2D paintover is usually more practical than modeling a complete environment. Work back and forth: use 3D where perspective or light benefits from spatial structure, then use painting to recover the style, color and details.
What should the 3D scene solve?
Decide first whether the goal is one polished image or an environment that must work from multiple viewpoints. A single-view concept image can be built around the chosen camera: model what affects the visible composition and leave unseen areas simple. A reusable or navigable environment needs more spatial continuity, organized assets and geometry that holds up as the camera moves. The workflow below is aimed primarily at a single illustration.

Think of the 3D scene as a flexible base for the painting. It can establish perspective, silhouettes, cast shadows, lighting and reusable forms. Paintover can then adjust color, atmosphere, edges and surface character without requiring every painted mark to exist as geometry.
1. Read the painting before modeling
Study the reference and identify its focal area, main value groups, light direction, horizon or eye level, and depth layers. Mark what belongs in the foreground, middle ground and background. If the source is a loose concept rather than a fixed composition, sketch a few thumbnail variations and a quick value pass before choosing a view; these make it easier to see whether the scene’s large shapes support the intended read.

- Composition: What must stay in the frame, and where does the viewer look first?
- Values: Which light and dark masses distinguish the focal area from its surroundings?
- Depth: Which forms overlap, recede or frame the subject?
- Light: From what direction do the main highlights and cast shadows fall?
2. Match the camera and block out the big shapes
Bring the painting into the 3D application as a background or reference image. Set a camera that approximates its viewpoint, then use simple geometry—boxes, planes and basic primitive forms—to build only the primary masses. Compare the render silhouette and framing against the painting. Adjust camera position, framing and proportions now, while changes are inexpensive; small details cannot repair a composition that reads incorrectly.
Set a basic light that agrees with the value plan. At this stage, judge the large light and shadow shapes rather than material polish. Misa Steinmetz’s Creative Bloq walkthrough uses a 50 mm focal length for her particular scene; that is a project-specific choice, not a universal camera setting. Her process starts with camera, base shapes and sun position before moving on to detail: Creative Bloq’s walkthrough.

3. Add only geometry that helps the image
Once the view and large forms work, add geometry where it improves the silhouette, depth cues, focal area or lighting. Reuse pieces when it is efficient: Steinmetz describes assembling secondary architecture from reusable columns, domes and arches rather than treating every element as unrelated. You can also use suitable environmental assets, provided they support the image’s design and do not pull attention away from the focal point.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the scene organized into collections or equivalent groups—for example, blockout, architecture, nature, lighting and atmosphere. Grouping makes it easier to isolate, hide or revise elements when testing a render or preparing a paintover. For a single-view image, spend little time on geometry that will never affect the camera, silhouette, shadow or final composite.

4. Render early and paint over
Do not wait for a fully finished scene. Render a quick draft once the composition, major forms and light direction are in place. Ask whether the image still reads like the source: is the focal point clear, do the depth layers separate, and are the important silhouettes in the right places?
Take the render into a 2D application and paint over it to adjust shapes, colors, atmosphere and painterly edges. Photoshop is used in Steinmetz’s documented process; Clip Studio Paint and Procreate are also named as example painting applications in a course FAQ. If a correction depends on perspective, spatial form or a cast shadow, return to 3D, revise the scene and render again. If it is mainly a color, edge or surface-character decision, painting directly may be faster.

Steinmetz notes that it is easy to spend too long in 3D instead of progressing on the image, and describes moving between a simple blockout and Photoshop paintover. Her early render uses 50 samples or fewer in that project; this is not a general quality target, since appropriate settings depend on the scene and renderer. The useful principle is to render quickly enough to evaluate the image before committing to detail.
5. Use render passes to support the finish
As the scene develops, render separate elements when they give you useful control in the 2D composite. Depending on the image, these might include mist, alternate materials or selection and mask passes. In Steinmetz’s example, later Blender renders add buildings, props and nature; mist and material passes are then brought into Photoshop for compositing and further paintover. A separate GameDevStation course outline likewise includes Blender render passes, Photoshop layer compositing and final paintover.

Use passes to make targeted edits easier, not as a requirement to make the final image fully procedural. The aim is a controllable base that serves the painting. Keep the final color, atmosphere, focal accents and surface character under artistic direction, whether those are created in the 2D application or partly in the 3D scene.
Which tools do you need?
Blender is the main 3D application in Steinmetz’s example, and she describes it as free and recommends it as a starting point. Pair it with a 2D painting application you already know; Photoshop appears in the walkthrough, while Clip Studio Paint and Procreate are examples listed in the course FAQ. The specific version and interface steps are not established here, so treat this as a version-agnostic workflow rather than a menu-by-menu guide.
A graphics drawing tablet is optional and useful if you intend to paint over renders, but it is not needed to build the 3D blockout. The course FAQ gives Wacom and Huion as examples, without establishing a required model, brand or size. A mouse or other input method can still be used for scene setup; choose painting hardware based on your own comfort and workflow.
