If a cordless vacuum runs briefly, cuts out, or will not charge, the battery may be worn—but those symptoms can also come from a loose charging connection, an obstructed airflow path, a dirty filter, or the selected power mode. Check the charging setup and basic maintenance first. Consider a replacement only if short runtime continues after a full charge and the part is confirmed for your exact vacuum model.
First identify what “not holding a charge” means
Different symptoms point to different checks. A vacuum that will not charge at all needs a charging-path check; one that charges but runs briefly needs a runtime and maintenance check. A machine that stops under load may be overheating or restricted, while an indicator that seems unchanged may require model-specific interpretation. None of these symptoms alone proves the battery has failed.

Check the charging path before buying a battery
- Test the outlet. Make sure it supplies power, then check that the charger is connected to mains power and fully plugged into the vacuum or dock as directed by the manual.
- Reseat the vacuum or removable battery. Confirm that it is positioned correctly in the dock or stand, or fitted securely to the vacuum if the model has a removable pack.
- Inspect charging contacts and the port. Look for lint or dust. With the vacuum off, clean only as the manufacturer instructs; do not improvise with liquids or tools that could damage the contacts.
- Stop using damaged charging equipment. If the cable, plug, or charger is damaged, seek manufacturer service or a confirmed compatible replacement rather than continuing to charge with it.
Samsung UK advises checking mains power, plug insertion, correct seating, and debris at the contacts; LG also identifies a disconnected adapter and debris at the charging port as possible issues. Clear maintenance problems that can mimic battery failure
With the vacuum switched off, empty the bin and inspect the nozzle, wand or tube, brush roll, hose if fitted, and filter for an obstruction or heavy buildup. A blockage or dirty filter can reduce airflow, impair cleaning, or contribute to a shutdown that looks like a battery fault.
- Remove only blockages you can reach safely and follow the manual for taking apart or clearing components.
- Clean or wash the filter only if the model’s instructions allow it. Let a washed filter dry completely before reinstalling it.
- Do not transfer cleaning or drying instructions from another vacuum model. For example, Dyson’s V15 guidance specifies at least 24 hours of drying for its filter; that timing is not a universal rule.

Compare runtime at the same setting and for the same model

When a replacement battery or service makes sense
If runtime is still unusually short after the vacuum has completed a model-appropriate charge and you have checked connections, power mode, airflow, and filter care, battery wear becomes more plausible. LG describes batteries as consumables with a limited lifespan and says short usage time despite a full charge may indicate that the battery has reached end of life. The available manufacturer guidance does not set a universal battery age, cycle count, or runtime threshold for replacement.
Before ordering a part, find the vacuum’s full model number and verify the battery part number with the manufacturer or an authorized parts source. Batteries and chargers are model-specific; a similar-looking pack is not evidence of compatibility. Miele directs owners to replace a faulty battery with an original Miele lithium-ion rechargeable battery. If a confirmed-good charging setup and basic maintenance checks do not solve the problem, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider instead of guessing at parts.
