You can create a YouTube campfire livestream with a webcam for a real, live fire scene or an encoder for a composed picture and crackling audio. YouTube supports both methods, but a 24/7 stream is not guaranteed to run unattended: plan to monitor it, use material you have rights to, and test before making it public.
Choose what viewers will see and hear
Decide whether the stream shows a real fire being filmed live, original prerecorded campfire footage, or an animation. Choose crackling audio you created yourself or have permission to use for both live streaming and any archive. A license does not necessarily prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may trigger a warning, a placeholder in place of the stream, interruption, or termination. Do not assume that a track described as “copyright-free” permits your intended live and archived uses; check its actual license.
Pick a YouTube streaming method

YouTube also lists mobile and console streaming routes. For a stationary campfire ambience scene, webcam and encoder are the most relevant choices. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS for encoder connections, but the available guidance here does not establish a particular encoder, bitrate, resolution, computer, or network capacity for this project.

Set up and test the broadcast
- Check eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Your stream must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance for the current eligibility and setup flow.
- Open YouTube’s live tools. Create a broadcast in YouTube’s live-streaming interface, then choose the method you intend to use: webcam or encoder. Follow the on-screen setup for that method; do not share your stream key publicly.
- Prepare the scene and audio. Confirm that the fire image is stable and that the crackling audio is audible without clipping or unwanted interruptions. For an encoder, use the RTMPS option where available and configure it according to YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than relying on an unsupported universal preset.
- Run a representative test. YouTube’s encoder guidance advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check the stream from a viewer’s perspective before launching publicly, including whether the picture and sound remain usable over time.
- Launch and monitor. Start the stream using the chosen method and watch for warnings, dropped connections, or audio and picture problems. The guidance cited here does not establish a failover design or promise continuous unattended operation, so do not treat a successful test as a guarantee of 24/7 availability.
Decide whether to archive the stream
If YouTube’s settings permit, archiving leaves a recording after the live broadcast. Archiving also means a Content ID claim may be made after the stream ends. YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie wrote on August 12, 2026, that “To count as qualified, watch hours have to come from public long form videos (including podcasts) or archived livestreams.” The post says unarchived livestreams do not count as qualified watch hours. This is not a promise of YouTube Partner Program acceptance or earnings.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction applies. YouTube’s eligibility guidance specifies no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- The live stream shows a warning or placeholder: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Check the rights for every audio and video element. If you licensed material, ask the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption.
- The encoder will not connect: Check the broadcast setup and stream key in YouTube’s live tools, then confirm the encoder is using the connection settings recommended in YouTube’s current guidance, including RTMPS where available. Do not expose the key to viewers.
- Audio or movement differs from the test: Test again with audio and movement representative of the actual stream. A static test may not reveal problems that appear during the intended broadcast.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Recheck the connection and broadcast status, then restart using YouTube’s live tools and your chosen method. Automatic recovery and guaranteed 24/7 operation are not established by the YouTube guidance cited here, so plan to check the channel rather than assuming a stop will resolve itself.
