How to Craft and Use Item Frames in Minecraft

Craft item frames with leather and sticks, place and rotate displays, build map walls, use comparator signals, and choose glow frames for dark areas.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Craft an item frame with one leather and eight sticks, place it on a suitable block face, then use an item on the frame to display it. Using a filled frame rotates the display through eight 45-degree positions for ordinary items. Glow item frames add an illuminated display, maps enlarge to full-block size, and comparators can read a frame’s rotation as redstone input.

What an item frame does

An item frame is a placeable display for one Minecraft item. It turns otherwise ordinary items into visible labels, decoration, map panels, or controls. A frame can attach to the side, top, or bottom of many blocks, and the displayed item remains visible as a miniature object on that face.

Frames are useful because they combine a simple visual display with interaction. You can insert an item, rotate it in fixed steps, remove the displayed item without necessarily removing the frame, and use the rotation state as a redstone input. An item renamed in an anvil also shows its custom name when your cursor is over the frame, which is useful for identifying storage contents or named equipment.

Position Ingredient
Center slot 1 leather
All eight surrounding slots 8 sticks
Output 1 item frame

The leather forms the backing and the eight sticks form the border. The recipe produces one ordinary item frame each time. Because the pattern fills every slot except the center, check that the leather is exactly in the middle before taking the output.

Other survival ways to obtain frames

  • An expert cartographer villager can sell item frames for seven emeralds.
  • Each End ship generates an item frame containing elytra. Finding one requires reaching an End ship, but it provides a frame and a valuable display item together.

Buying from a cartographer is an option when leather or sticks are temporarily scarce. End-ship frames are tied to exploration rather than renewable crafting, so ordinary crafting remains the dependable method for building large displays.

How to place an item frame

  1. Put the frame in your hotbar and select it.
  2. Aim at the side, top, or bottom face of a block that accepts the attachment.
  3. Press your edition’s place or use control. The frame appears on the targeted face.
  4. If the target is an interactable block, such as a chest or door, hold the sneak control while placing. Sneaking places the frame instead of opening or operating the block.

The broad placement rule includes the sides, tops, and bottoms of solid blocks. The official examples also include surfaces such as cactus, pressure plates, fences, trees, slabs, walls, chests, and doors. Whether a particular face works can still depend on edition rules and the exact block geometry.

Placement differences to expect

Java Edition has specific restrictions for some top-face placements involving fences, walls, and fence gates. Java and Bedrock also differ in whether a frame can share space with another block or another frame. If a placement that seems logical fails, test a different face or temporarily remove the neighboring attachment rather than assuming the recipe or frame is defective.

On an interactable block, the sneak step is especially important. Without it, the game gives priority to the chest, door, or other block’s normal interaction. With it, the frame is placed on the face you are targeting.

How to put items in, remove them, and rotate them

Insert an item

  1. Hold the item you want to display.
  2. Aim at the empty frame.
  3. Press the use or interact control.

The item leaves your hand or selected slot and appears inside the frame. Blocks render as miniature displays, so blocks, tools, materials, and named objects can all serve as visual labels.

Rotate the display

Use the filled frame again while targeting it. Each use advances the displayed item by one 45-degree step. Ordinary items have eight possible orientations, allowing a precise diagonal or horizontal presentation. Rotation changes the item’s visual state without removing it from the frame.

Maps use a smaller set of orientations than ordinary items. If a map appears to stop rotating sooner than another item, that is expected behavior rather than a broken frame.

Remove the displayed item

Punch a filled frame to take the displayed item out while leaving the frame in place under the documented item-frame behavior. This is useful when you want to change a label without rebuilding the wall or when you need to retrieve a valuable item from a display. Target the frame itself rather than the supporting block so that the interaction applies to the display.

Use named items as labels

Rename an item in an anvil before inserting it. When your cursor is over the frame, the item’s custom name appears, giving storage rooms a text label without placing a separate sign. A framed block can then communicate both its type and its custom name.

Using maps in item frames

A map in an item frame expands to the size of a full block. This makes it possible to assemble adjacent framed maps into a large wall or floor map: place each map in the frame that corresponds to the area you want to show, then align the frames edge to edge.

The frame’s location appears on the map as a green pointer. In the Nether, that pointer spins in a way similar to the player cursor, so navigation cues can behave differently from those in the Overworld. Plan the map room with this Nether behavior in mind rather than treating the pointer as a fixed north-facing marker.

Map-wall planning

  • Use a consistent grid of supporting blocks so every frame sits at the same height and orientation.
  • Place neighboring maps in adjacent frames to create one continuous display surface.
  • Leave enough room to target an individual frame when replacing or rotating a map.
  • Use glow frames when the map room must remain readable in darkness.

Because each framed map occupies a full-block-sized visual area, a floor installation can function as a navigational overview while a wall installation works as a large regional map.

Using item-frame rotation with redstone

A comparator can read the state of an item frame. As you rotate the displayed item, each 45-degree step changes the comparator output. The frame therefore provides a selectable input with eight ordinary-item positions, rather than merely acting as decoration.

Build ideas

  • Combination selector: Assign a meaning to each orientation and require a particular sequence before a mechanism activates.
  • Dial or control panel: Use several frames as visual knobs for choosing a mode, destination, or setting.
  • Display-backed switch: Let the item’s orientation show the current state while the comparator carries that state into a redstone circuit.
  • Visual lock: Arrange a row of frames and make the correct set of rotations the visible key.

These are design patterns derived from the documented comparator signal and rotation states. The exact wiring, pulse handling, and output logic depend on the rest of your circuit, so test the comparator line with the specific orientation sequence your build requires.

Reliable redstone setup

  1. Place the frame on a block face where players can reach and rotate it.
  2. Insert an item whose orientation is easy to recognize.
  3. Put a comparator so it reads the frame’s state.
  4. Rotate the item through its positions and observe the resulting redstone changes.
  5. Connect the comparator output to the selector, lock, or control circuit and document which orientation means which setting.

Do not assume that a frame’s visual angle is cosmetic. The comparator distinguishes the rotation state, so changing the angle is the actual input operation.

How to craft and use a glow item frame

Crafting

Combine an ordinary item frame with one glow ink sac to create a glow item frame. The glow ink sac is the extra ingredient; the ordinary frame remains the base component.

What glows

The glow frame and the item displayed inside it remain visible in darkness. It does not require a separate light source to keep the border and contents readable, making it suitable for night-time builds, dark corridors, signs, item labels, and map rooms.

Ordinary versus glow frames

Consideration Ordinary item frame Glow item frame
Extra ingredient No glow ink sac; crafted from leather and sticks Requires an ordinary frame plus a glow ink sac
Visibility in darkness Uses the surrounding light level Frame and displayed item remain visible in darkness
Best uses Daylight displays, storage labels, decoration, and standard map walls Night-time signage, dark storage rooms, illuminated labels, and map rooms
Insert and rotate behavior Insert with use; rotate through item-frame positions Uses the same basic insert-and-rotate interaction
Edition caveats Subject to Java and Bedrock placement rules Subject to the same edition-specific placement differences

Choose the ordinary version when ambient lighting is already sufficient or glow ink sacs are limited. Choose the glow version when the display itself must remain legible after the surrounding lights are removed.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The two editions implement frames differently. In Java Edition, an item frame is treated as an entity. In Bedrock Edition, it is treated as a block or block entity. This underlying distinction explains practical differences in collision, placement edge cases, and breaking behavior.

Area Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Implementation Entity Block/block entity
Space sharing Can permit multiple frames in one block space on different faces in some situations Behaves more like a sign and cannot share the same space with other blocks or frames
Placement Has specific restrictions on some top faces of fences, walls, and fence gates Uses different placement rules and edge cases
Collision and breaking Entity behavior affects how interactions and breaking are handled Block-like behavior affects interactions and breaking

A tutorial written for one edition should not be treated as a guarantee for the other. If a multi-face display works in Java but refuses to place in Bedrock, the space-sharing rule is the likely explanation. Conversely, a Bedrock placement that looks natural may be blocked by Java’s top-face restrictions.

Bedrock identifiers for commands and add-ons

For Bedrock command or add-on work, Microsoft Learn lists these identifiers:

  • minecraft:frame for an ordinary item frame
  • minecraft:glow_frame for a glow item frame

Use the identifier that matches the object you intend to create. The identifiers do not remove normal placement or interaction differences between editions.

Practical display patterns

Storage labels

Place a frame on or near a storage block and insert a representative item, such as the material stored inside. Rename the representative item in an anvil when a more specific label is needed. A framed block gives a quick visual cue, while the custom name supplies the detailed description when targeted.

Decorative walls and floors

Use blocks or tools as miniature art objects, and rotate each one deliberately so a row shares the same angle. For a floor, check that players can still target individual frames; for a wall, keep the supporting surface uniform so the display reads as one panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Map rooms

Build a regular grid of frames, insert the maps, and use glow frames if the room is intentionally dark. A full-block map display can cover a large wall or floor without changing the maps themselves.

Interactive control panels

Combine visible item orientations with comparators. The item tells players what the control is set to, while the comparator supplies the redstone state. Record the accepted orientation for each setting so the panel remains understandable after several rotations.

Troubleshooting item frames

The frame will not place

  • Confirm that you are targeting a face the frame can attach to rather than empty space.
  • Try the side, top, or bottom face of a different supporting block.
  • On a chest, door, or other interactable block, sneak while pressing the place control.
  • Check whether Java’s restrictions on fence, wall, or fence-gate top faces apply.
  • In Bedrock, make sure another block or frame is not already occupying the space.

The chest or door opens instead

You are likely using the normal interaction without sneaking. Keep the frame selected, hold sneak, aim at the desired face, and place again.

The item does not appear

Hold the intended item in your active slot, aim directly at the empty frame, and use the interact control. Using the frame while it is empty is the insertion action; using it while it is filled rotates the existing display instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The item rotates fewer times than expected

Ordinary items have eight 45-degree positions. Maps have fewer orientations, so a map may reach its final state sooner. For redstone builds, test the actual item in the actual frame rather than assuming every display has the same number of visible states.

The display is hard to see at night

Replace the ordinary frame with a glow item frame made by combining an item frame and a glow ink sac. The glow version keeps the frame and its contents visible in darkness.

Quick build checklist

  1. Gather one leather and eight sticks for each ordinary frame.
  2. Craft the frame in the center-and-surrounding-slot pattern.
  3. Select it from the hotbar and target a compatible block face.
  4. Sneak when placing on a chest, door, or another interactable block.
  5. Hold the display item and use the empty frame.
  6. Use the filled frame to rotate it in 45-degree steps.
  7. Punch the filled frame when you need to remove the item while keeping the frame.
  8. Use a glow ink sac with an ordinary frame when darkness should not hide the display.
  9. Add a comparator when the rotation should control redstone.
  10. Apply the Java or Bedrock placement and space-sharing rules for the edition you are playing.
