There is no built-in “Life Dogs” switch in Altis Life. A dog is a mission-script integration: install a compatible Altis Life server, unpack the mission, merge a dog script (such as a Dog Friends- or JBOY-style implementation), then test ownership, locality, permissions and persistence in multiplayer. The procedure below shows the server layout, version checks, integration points, player interactions and failure recovery you need for a reliable K9 or civilian-companion feature.

What “adding dogs” means in Altis Life

Altis Life is a multiplayer mission running on an Arma 3 dedicated server. Dog behavior is not enabled by selecting a framework option; it is code and mission content that must be added to the specific Altis_Life.Altis mission you run. The dog object, actions, detection logic and ownership rules all live in that mission or in functions loaded by it.

This distinction matters when you see a video or forum post referring to “Life Dogs.” The phrase describes a concept or a script integration, not one maintained package with a universal installer. Dog Friends discussions from 2014 and JBOY Dog discussions from 2016–2018 are useful starting points, but their files, class names and initialization assumptions may not match your current Arma 3 build or Altis Life revision. Treat every script as source code to audit and adapt.

  • K9 role: restrict spawning and detection to a police faction or a configured K9 job, with all permission checks performed in server-validated code.
  • Civilian companion: let an eligible player spawn or purchase one dog and provide follow, stay, sit, vehicle and release actions as supported by the script.
  • Detection gameplay: implement mine detection or another configured target such as contraband only after deciding who can see the result and how it is verified.

Do not advertise a complete attack system merely because a dog can collide with a player or because a forum post mentions biting. In the cited Dog Friends discussion, the author described collision damage but said a convincing attack animation was difficult and not finished. A polished bite mechanic requires additional animation, damage, cooldown and anti-abuse work.

Prerequisites and version decisions

Build the server first, then integrate the dog. Mixing an old mission with a newer framework or Arma build is the most common cause of confusing errors.

Required components

  • An Arma 3 dedicated-server installation, normally installed or updated with SteamCMD.
  • An Altis Life mission PBO, normally named Altis_Life.Altis.pbo.
  • The server-side Altis Life PBO, life_server.pbo.
  • A MySQL-compatible database. MariaDB may be suitable, but use the database version and schema requirements documented for your exact framework revision.
  • For the documented Altis Life RPG 5.0.0 path, extDB3 and its matching server configuration.
  • A dog script whose license, required addons and Arma version are known. Obtain the complete sample mission and initialization files, not just a fragment copied from a forum post.

The setup material commonly used for Altis Life 5.0.0 records MySQL 5.6.5 or newer and the SteamCMD update command app_update 233780 validate. Those details are historical guidance rather than a guarantee for every current fork, so verify the requirements in the revision you install before deploying publicly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lock the exact revisions

Write down the Arma 3 server build, Altis Life commit or release, extDB3 build, database engine/version and dog-script revision. Keep these in a deployment note and test upgrades on a copy. A framework update can change initialization order, namespace variables, database APIs or remote-execution permissions even when the mission still loads.

Install the base Altis Life server

Start with a clean, working Altis Life server. If players cannot join or the framework cannot connect to its database, a dog integration will only obscure the original problem.

1. Install or update the dedicated server

  1. Install the Arma 3 dedicated server with SteamCMD.
  2. From the SteamCMD console, run app_update 233780 validate when the framework’s instructions call for that app ID.
  3. Launch once with your normal server configuration and verify that the server appears, loads Altis and writes an error-free log before adding any dog files.

2. Install the server-side framework and database connector

The bydolg framework notes a MySQL-capable database, a ready Arma 3 server and the startup parameters -servermod=@life_server;@extDB3. The server-side folder contains extDB3 in that distribution. Use the equivalent paths for your chosen fork; do not assume that a client-side mod directory is interchangeable with -servermod.

3. Place the PBOs in the expected directories

The documented layout is:

Arma 3 Server/
├── @life_server/
│ └── Addons/
│ └── life_server.pbo
├── @extDB3/
└── MPMissions/
    └── Altis_Life.Altis.pbo

Keep life_server.pbo under @life_server/Addons and the mission PBO under MPMissions. A server that loads the mission but cannot load life_server will often fail later when database or server-only functions are called.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Prepare the mission and database

For Altis Life 5.0.0 and later, the setup wiki describes separate SQM files for Altis and Tanoa. Use the Altis SQM, copy it into the unpacked Altis_Life.Altis mission folder and rename it exactly mission.sqm. Import the framework’s SQL file to create the AltisLife database, then check the connection settings and credentials against your installed database server. Because the wiki mirror was modified in 2019, confirm every schema and connector setting against your actual framework revision.

Before editing, copy the original mission PBO and unpacked folder. Keep your dog integration in version control or in a clearly named patch so that a framework update can be rebased instead of manually reconstructed.

Choose a dog implementation

Decision axis Dog Friends-style approach JBOY Dog-style approach
Starting point Forum-described companion/K9 concept with configurable detection ideas. Sample mission and init.sqf intended as a reusable starting point.
Detection Discussion explicitly describes mine indicators and changing the target to drugs or another object. Feature discussion includes mine-detection-related behavior, patrol and voice-command ideas.
Combat Attack animation was described as difficult; collision damage is not a finished bite system. Use behavior from the sample only after verifying it against your mission and Arma build.
Maintenance risk Discussion dates to 2014; compatibility must be checked carefully. Discussions date to 2016–2018; current support and forum availability are uncertain.

Use the sample mission as a reference, not as a replacement for Altis Life. Compare its required addons, object classes, function names, scheduled loops and event handlers with your framework. Remove assumptions about a single-player editor preview, then adapt the code to Altis Life’s initialization order and namespace conventions.

Merge the dog script into the mission

1. Inspect the sample before copying code

Open the sample mission and its init.sqf. Identify where it creates the dog object, loads functions, adds actions, starts patrol or detection loops, and handles death or deletion. Record every external addon, config class and global variable it expects. A missing function file or class may produce only a vague “undefined variable” or “cannot create object” message in the server log.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Copy mission files into the unpacked Altis mission

Copy only the required dog scripts, function folders, sounds and configuration files into the unpacked Altis_Life.Altis directory. Preserve the framework’s existing folders and case-sensitive names. If both missions contain an init.sqf, do not overwrite Altis Life’s file; merge the dog initialization into it.

3. Preserve initialization order

Keep framework initialization first where it establishes player variables, server functions or database state. Start dog code only after the objects and functions it references exist. If the dog script expects a function registry, add its entries to the mission’s existing configuration rather than creating a second competing registry. Avoid broad global variables; use a mission namespace or a dedicated structure for dog ownership and state.

4. Create the dog on the correct machine

Decide whether the server or a client owns the dog object. A server-created dog is easier to validate and synchronize; a client-created dog may be simpler for a local prototype but can make actions invisible to other players and allows cheating if ownership is not checked. Whichever model you choose, document it and use remote execution only through the framework’s allowed functions.

5. Add actions and event handlers

Merge the sample’s actions for follow, stay, sit, release and detection only after checking their condition code. Add actions to the object on the machine that owns it, or explicitly broadcast them where the script requires. Attach handlers for death, disconnect, player death and mission restart so that a lost dog cannot leave a permanent ownership record or an orphaned object.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

6. Repack and load the mission

Repack the edited folder as Altis_Life.Altis.pbo and place it in MPMissions. Launch a private test server with the same startup parameters, database and addons used in production. Check both client and server logs immediately after mission initialization; resolve syntax and missing-class errors before testing gameplay.

Design the player experience

Spawning, buying and ownership

Choose one authoritative action: a spawn point, a shop purchase or a role-issued dog. Store the owner identifier and dog status in the framework’s persistence layer if the feature survives reconnects. A client-only variable is not sufficient for a purchasable dog. Enforce “one active dog per player” on the server, and define what happens when the owner logs out, dies or disconnects.

Follow, stay and sit

Expose only the commands your chosen script actually implements. Each command should have a visible state change and a safe fallback: if the dog cannot reach the player, it should stop rather than teleport repeatedly or run into traffic. A release or dismiss action should remove the object and clear ownership so the player can replace a dead or stuck dog.

Vehicle behavior

Entering and leaving vehicles is highly script-dependent. Test every supported vehicle type, seats and transitions. If the sample does not implement vehicle handling, do not add an action that merely changes a variable while leaving the dog behind. Define a timeout or cancellation path when a vehicle is destroyed or the owner disconnects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Detection and sniffing

The Dog Friends discussion describes detecting mines within a configurable distance, creating icons on explosives and adapting the same idea to drugs or another target. Implement this as an explicit action such as “find explosives,” with a cooldown and a bounded search radius. Decide whether the result is visible only to the handler, to a police faction or to every player. Server-authoritative validation is preferable for anything that affects arrests, rewards or mission objectives.

Attack behavior

Do not equate collision damage with an intentional attack. The cited discussion says the animation was difficult to make convincing. If you add an attack, specify target eligibility, command range, damage, cooldown, cancellation and logging. Test it against accidental vehicle collisions, safe zones and other anti-griefing rules before enabling it on a public server.

Multiplayer locality, permissions and persistence

Locality checks

Arma objects and actions are local to a machine. A dog that works in the editor may have its action attached to the editor’s local client, while the dedicated server owns the same object in multiplayer. Check object locality at creation and when ownership changes. If an interaction menu is missing, first verify that the action is added where the object is local and that its condition evaluates true for the current player.

Role and faction permissions

For a K9 unit, validate the player’s role on the server every time the player requests a dog, detection result or attack. Hiding an action on the client is not authorization. Reject requests from the wrong faction, rank or job, and log rejected requests while testing so an incorrect variable name is not mistaken for a permission exploit.

Persistence and restart recovery

Decide whether dogs are temporary mission objects or persistent assets. For persistent dogs, save owner, status and any purchase data through the framework’s database API. On restart, restore each dog exactly once after player state is available. On a temporary dog, explicitly delete it and clear the record on disconnect or mission end. This prevents duplicate dogs after restart and avoids orphaned objects that consume server resources.

Visibility and detection results

Choose an audience for markers and notifications before writing the broadcast code. Owner-only markers protect civilian gameplay; faction-wide markers support coordinated police work; server-authoritative results are appropriate when detection triggers a reward or arrest. Broadcast only the selected result, not the entire scan state or private owner data.

Test the integration before release

Run these checks on a private dedicated server, not only in the editor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fresh join: connect as a new player, spawn the dog and confirm the object, actions and logs appear without errors.
  2. Two-player visibility: have a second player observe the dog, its movement and any permitted marker while the owner issues commands.
  3. Reconnect: disconnect and reconnect the owner. Verify the intended persistence behavior and ensure a second dog is not created accidentally.
  4. Restart: restart the server and confirm that temporary dogs are gone or persistent dogs are restored once.
  5. Death and replacement: kill or delete the dog, then test the replacement path and ownership cleanup.
  6. Vehicle transitions: test supported vehicles, vehicle destruction and the owner leaving the vehicle.
  7. Detection: place a known test mine or configured target, run the detection action at distances inside and outside the chosen radius, and verify the intended audience sees the result.
  8. Permission abuse: attempt every dog action from an unauthorized faction, an uninitialized player and a second player. The server should reject each request.
  9. Load and cleanup: observe server performance during repeated scans and confirm that loops stop when a dog dies or is released.

These are engineering checks, not claims that the historical scripts have already passed them. Record the Arma build, mission revision and dog-script revision for every test run.

Troubleshooting guide

The dog does not spawn

  • Confirm the dog files are inside the packed mission and that the merged init.sqf actually calls the creation function.
  • Check the exact object class against the Arma build you run; an obsolete class can fail without producing a visible dog.
  • Read the server log for missing function files, syntax errors and addon requirements.
  • Verify that the spawn code runs after the player or server initialization data it references.

There is no interaction menu

  • Check locality: the action must be added on the machine that owns the dog or through the script’s supported remote call.
  • Evaluate the action condition for the current player, faction and distance.
  • Confirm that the action is attached to the dog object rather than only to an editor preview object.

It works in the editor but not on the dedicated server

  • Compare mission description and configuration files, required addons and server startup parameters.
  • Make sure life_server.pbo is under @life_server/Addons and extDB3 is loaded with the server-side parameter.
  • Check remote-execution permissions and any code that assumes a single local player.
  • Test with the packed PBO, not an unpacked editor folder, because packing can expose path and case errors.

The dog duplicates after a restart

  • Choose one restore path and guard it with a server-side “already restored” state.
  • Clear temporary objects and ownership records when the mission ends or a player disconnects.
  • Do not let both a client join handler and a server restore routine create the same persistent dog.

Detection works only for the owner

That may be correct if owner-only feedback is your design. If it is not, inspect where markers and notifications are created, then broadcast the validated result to the intended faction or audience. Do not broadcast private scan data merely to make a debugging marker appear.

A framework update breaks the feature

Rebase the integration against the exact Altis Life revision. Re-check initialization order, database and persistence APIs, player-role variables, remote-execution configuration and any renamed functions. Keep the original mission backup so you can isolate whether the break came from the framework, Arma build or dog code.

Maintenance and compatibility expectations

The setup wiki used for the common v5 path records a 2019 modification date, while the Dog Friends and JBOY discussions are historical threads from 2014–2018. That age does not make them unusable, but it does mean that class names, event handlers, function syntax and security assumptions can be obsolete. There is no authoritative, maintained package that provides one universal “Life Dogs” installation procedure for every Altis Life server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the dog integration isolated, document its dependencies and retest after every Arma, framework, extDB3 or database change. Remove unused patrol and scan loops, cap detection frequency and log creation, deletion and permission failures. These practices make a small companion feature manageable instead of turning it into an unexplained collection of mission-wide globals.

Recommended implementation sequence

  1. Choose and record the Altis Life revision, Arma build, database engine and dog-script source.
  2. Build a clean dedicated server with life_server.pbo, Altis_Life.Altis.pbo, the required database and, for the documented v5 path, extDB3.
  3. Verify a normal Altis Life login, database connection and restart before touching dog code.
  4. Unpack the mission and study the dog sample’s init.sqf, functions, classes and required addons.
  5. Merge creation and actions without overwriting framework initialization; preserve namespaces and load order.
  6. Implement one ownership model and one permission check on the server.
  7. Add follow/stay/sit and release first; add vehicle handling, detection and any combat behavior only after each preceding feature is stable.
  8. Repack the mission, run the multiplayer test sequence and fix locality, persistence and cleanup issues.
  9. Document the final commands, paths, revisions and recovery procedure for whoever maintains the server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a single Altis Life setting that enables dogs?

No. Dogs require integrating a compatible mission script into the specific Altis Life mission and server framework you run.

Can I copy the dog script into the server’s @life_server folder?

Usually no. Dog creation, actions and mission behavior belong in the unpacked Altis Life mission; keep server-only code in life_server only when the framework integration specifically requires it.

Will mine or drug detection automatically work after installation?

Not necessarily. Historical Dog Friends discussions describe mine indicators and configurable sniffing ideas, but you must merge, configure and multiplayer-test the detection code and decide who can see its results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a dog work in the editor but disappear on a dedicated server?

The usual causes are locality, missing server-side PBOs or addons, an initialization-order assumption, remote-execution restrictions, or a class name that is not valid in the server’s Arma build.
