What a respawn anchor does
A respawn anchor lets you choose a return point inside the Nether. That matters during Nether mining, fortress runs, bastion searches, and long-distance travel: after a death, you can return near your expedition instead of relying on an Overworld bed.

You must add glowstone before setting the spawn point and replenish the anchor as charges are consumed.
Minecraft.net’s 2023 guide describes the core interaction: hold glowstone, use it on a placed anchor to add a charge, then use an anchor with at least one charge to make it your spawn location. Mojang’s Java Edition release notes from 2020 and the Bedrock Nether Update notes describe the same four-charge maximum and one-charge-per-respawn behavior.

Materials you need
Crying obsidian
The recipe requires six crying obsidian blocks. The official Minecraft guide says crying obsidian can be mined with a diamond or netherite pickaxe. It can also be obtained through piglin bartering, so bartering is an alternative when you do not have a suitable pickaxe or want to supplement what you mine.
- Mining requirement: a diamond or netherite pickaxe.
- Alternative source: piglin bartering.
- Quantity for one anchor: six blocks.
Plan the quantity around your expedition. One anchor consumes six crying obsidian, and a distant Nether outpost may justify carrying materials for a second anchor rather than depending on one location.
Glowstone
You need three glowstone blocks for the recipe. Glowstone is a Nether resource, and it has a second role after crafting: the same resource is used to charge the placed anchor. Bring more than the recipe minimum if you expect to die or use the anchor repeatedly.
- Quantity for the recipe: three blocks.
- Charging use: hold a glowstone block and use it on the anchor.
- Supply planning: keep spare glowstone in the room or in your expedition storage because the anchor has a finite charge capacity.
Respawn-anchor crafting recipe
Use a crafting table’s 3×3 grid. Put crying obsidian across the entire top row, glowstone across the entire middle row, and crying obsidian across the entire bottom row. The completed grid produces one respawn anchor.

This arrangement uses all nine crafting slots: six crying obsidian blocks and three glowstone blocks. If the output does not appear, check that every slot contains the correct block type; ordinary obsidian is not interchangeable with crying obsidian.

How to charge the anchor
Charging procedure
- Place the respawn anchor where you intend to use it, preferably inside a protected Nether room.
- Select a glowstone block in your hotbar.
- Use the glowstone on the placed anchor. One interaction adds a charge.
- Repeat the interaction until the anchor reaches its capacity or you have enough power for the trip.
An anchor stores up to four charges. The Minecraft.net guide phrases the limit as “up to four at a time,” and Mojang’s 2020 release notes confirm the same maximum. Four glowstone blocks therefore provide the full charge for an empty anchor; the three glowstone blocks used in the recipe are separate material and do not automatically charge it.

Do not treat a fully charged anchor as permanent. Each respawn at that anchor removes one charge. Once the charges are gone, that anchor is no longer a usable charged spawn point until you add glowstone again.
How to set your spawn in the Nether
Set the point safely
- Enter the Nether and travel to the location where you want to return.
- Place the anchor in a room or other protected position. Avoid putting it directly beside lava, a cliff edge, hostile-mob exposure, or a portal exit where you could be attacked immediately.
- Charge it with at least one glowstone block. An uncharged anchor cannot become your usable spawn point.
- Interact with the charged anchor once. This sets your Nether spawn location, as described in Minecraft.net’s 2023 spawning guide.
Setting the point and charging the anchor are separate actions. Crafting an anchor does not set a spawn, and placing one without adding glowstone does not create a return point.
Build around the arrival point
The safest design is a small room with solid walls, a roof, lighting, and enough space to move before opening the door. Keep spare glowstone in a chest inside the room or in another protected cache. A respawn point is only useful if you can survive the first moments after arriving.
For an active expedition, place the anchor before beginning the dangerous section of the route rather than waiting until you are carrying rare loot. Confirm that it has a charge and that you have interacted with it before moving on.

What happens after you die
When the game respawns you at the anchor, it consumes one charge. Mojang’s Java release notes and Bedrock Nether Update notes both describe this one-charge-per-respawn rule. The practical consequence is that a four-charge anchor is a reserve for four anchor respawns, not an unlimited checkpoint.
- After returning, check the anchor’s remaining charge state.
- Add a glowstone block if you need to restore capacity.
- Before another dangerous attempt, make sure the anchor still has at least one charge and remains the point you intend to use.
If the reserve reaches zero, the anchor no longer functions as a charged spawn point. Recharge it before relying on it again. Keeping glowstone at the site is especially important when the route back to the Nether is long or dangerous.
Why a respawn anchor explodes
Overworld and End safety rule
A charged respawn anchor is designed for Nether spawn-setting. If you try to use a charged anchor to set spawn in the Overworld or the End, it explodes instead of creating a spawn point. This is the most common reason players lose an anchor and damage their surroundings.
The dimension check applies to the use action, not merely to the recipe. You can craft the item normally, but do not carry a charged anchor to an Overworld or End base and interact with it as though it were a bed.
Prevent accidental explosions
- Use the anchor for spawn-setting only while you are in the Nether.
- Do not test an unfamiliar anchor beside storage, portals, redstone, or other valuable builds in the Overworld or End.
- Label containers that hold charged anchors so another player does not mistake one for an ordinary decorative block.
- Use a bed for ordinary Overworld respawn planning; reserve anchors for Nether expeditions.

Respawn anchor versus a bed
The two blocks solve different travel problems. A bed is the ordinary Overworld respawn tool. A respawn anchor is the specialized Nether option with a consumable power supply and a dangerous failure mode outside the Nether.

Choose an anchor when the cost of returning from the Overworld after every Nether death is greater than the cost of collecting glowstone and protecting a local spawn room. Choose a bed for an Overworld base, and do not substitute one block for the other across dimensions.

Practical setup for a Nether expedition
Before leaving your base
- Pack the crafted anchor.
- Carry spare glowstone in addition to the three blocks used in crafting.
- Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe if you plan to mine more crying obsidian during the trip.
- Decide where a protected room can be built before you begin a high-risk route.
At the destination
- Build or claim a defensible room first.
- Place the anchor away from open lava, drops, and likely hostile-mob paths.
- Add enough glowstone for the number of attempts you expect to make, up to four charges.
- Interact with it to set the Nether spawn before exploring farther.
- Store replacement glowstone where a future respawn can reach it.
After a failed attempt
Return to the protected room, inspect the remaining charge, and recharge before trying the route again. If the anchor is empty, do not assume the old point is still usable; add glowstone and set the point again.
Troubleshooting
The recipe will not craft
Verify the 3×3 pattern: three crying obsidian blocks on top, three glowstone blocks in the middle, and three crying obsidian blocks on the bottom. Ordinary obsidian cannot replace crying obsidian, and the recipe needs all six crying obsidian blocks.
I cannot mine crying obsidian
Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe, as specified in the official Minecraft guide. If neither is available, piglin bartering is the documented alternative source.
The anchor does not set my spawn
Check both conditions: you must be in the Nether, and the anchor must have at least one charge. Crafting or placing the block alone is not enough; hold glowstone and use it on the anchor first, then interact with the charged block.
The anchor exploded
You used a charged anchor for spawn-setting in the Overworld or the End. Do not repeat the interaction in those dimensions. Use the anchor only for Nether spawn-setting and use a bed for the ordinary Overworld role.
The anchor worked once but later stopped
Its charge reserve was probably consumed by respawns. Each respawn removes one charge, and the maximum is four. Add glowstone to restore the reserve before depending on the anchor again.
I keep respawning in danger
The anchor is doing its job, but the placement is unsafe. Build the room before setting the point, move the anchor plan to a more defensible location, and keep the arrival area clear of lava, drops, and exposed hostile-mob routes.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition behavior
Mojang’s Java Edition Nether release notes and Bedrock Nether Update notes describe the same basic mechanics covered here: glowstone charges the anchor to a maximum of four, and each respawn consumes one charge. The recipe and the essential Nether-only safety rule are therefore applicable to both editions. Interface prompts and button names can vary by platform, but the required actions remain the same: place, charge, interact in the Nether, and recharge after use.
