The usual fix is to finish the Steam update on the player side, update the server installation, restart the server, and then reconnect. A server can need an update even when Steam has not downloaded anything for the game client: Keen Games has previously issued server-only updates, including Hotfix #11’s 2024 version number 511168.

What the Enshrouded “Version Mismatch” error means
Enshrouded checks the build running on your client against the build reported by the dedicated server. If they are not compatible, the connection is rejected before you join the world. This is normally an update-synchronization problem, not proof that your save is damaged or that your internet connection is broken.

The most confusing cases happen after a patch. Steam may update players first while a self-hosted or rented server is still running its previous files. The reverse can also occur when a server provider deploys an update before a player has restarted Steam. Until both sides finish updating and the server is restarted, the mismatch can persist.
Server-only updates are possible
Keen Games’ Hotfix #11 documented a server-only release with version number 511168 in 2024 and explicitly noted that game clients did not change. That number is historical, not a current version target. It demonstrates why checking only the player’s Steam download is insufficient: the dedicated-server package may require maintenance even when the client appears current.

Fastest fix: synchronize both installations
Use this order when you need to get back into a world quickly:
- Let Enshrouded finish updating in Steam on the computer you use to play.
- Update the dedicated-server installation, either through Steam’s Tools library, SteamCMD, or your hosting provider’s control panel.
- Stop and restart the server after the update completes.
- Close and relaunch Enshrouded if Steam was restarted or the client updated while it was open.
- Join only after the server has completed its startup and is shown as online.
A restart is important because replacing files on disk does not change the build of a server process that is already running. The old process must exit and launch again from the updated installation.

Check Steam Downloads
- Open Steam and select Downloads.
- Confirm that Enshrouded has completed downloading and installing any pending update.
- Wait until Steam reports that the download and disk-writing stages are finished; a download that is still queued or installing is not complete.
- Launch the game again, then retry the server connection.
If no download appears even though other players can connect after a patch, restart Steam completely and check Downloads again. Steam can retain a stale client state until the application is closed and reopened.
Clear Steam’s download cache when the client will not refresh
If Steam continues to behave as though the client is current while the server rejects it, use Steam’s Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache control, then sign in again and check Downloads. Clearing the cache can remove a stuck update state, but it does not update the dedicated server; that side still needs its own update and restart.

Step 2: Update a self-hosted dedicated server
Servers installed through Steam
If you installed the dedicated server from Steam, update it from the Steam Library’s Tools section:
- Stop the running dedicated-server process.
- Open Steam Library and switch the library filter to Tools.
- Find Enshrouded Dedicated Server and allow Steam to download its pending update.
- Start the server executable directly from the installation you have been using.
- Wait for startup to finish before testing a connection.
The official server guide states that the executable creates enshrouded_server.json on its first launch. Keep using the same installation and configuration file rather than creating a second server directory. Starting a newly downloaded copy while the service still points to the old directory is a common reason an apparently successful update has no effect.
Preserve the existing world and configuration
- Do not delete the server directory to “force” an update.
- Keep the existing save files and
enshrouded_server.jsonin place. - Check which executable your shortcut, scheduled task, service, or container actually starts.
- Only test after the process has stopped cleanly and relaunched from that same path.
An update changes server program files; it should not require abandoning the world. If your host or script uses a different path from the one you updated, correct the launch target before troubleshooting anything else.
Step 3: Update with SteamCMD
Steam Support recommends SteamCMD for standalone game servers. This is appropriate when the server was installed without the normal Steam desktop client or is maintained by a script.

- Stop the dedicated-server process so files are not locked and no save is being written during the update.
- Run the same SteamCMD update and validation workflow used for the existing installation.
- Wait for SteamCMD to finish downloading and validating files; do not interrupt it when it is checking or replacing content.
- Confirm that the command targeted the server’s established installation directory and server application, not a new directory or the player client.
- Start the server from that installation and wait for it to come online.
The exact command and application identifier depend on how your server was installed. Do not guess a different app, directory, or executable: changing those can leave you running a second copy with different saves and settings. If an existing update script already works, use that script and add validation rather than replacing its paths.
Step 4: Update a rented or managed server
For a rented Enshrouded server, the provider normally distributes updates. Keen Games advises renters to wait for automatic updating or try a restart, depending on the provider’s process.

- Use its Update, Verify, or equivalent maintenance action if one is available.
- Restart the server from the panel after the update completes.
- Wait until the panel reports that the server is online and accepting connections.
- Reconnect with a freshly launched game client.
A panel restart may queue an update rather than apply it immediately. Give the server time to stop, download files, validate them, and boot. If the panel still reports the old build or repeatedly returns to an offline state, open a support ticket and include the approximate patch time, the server name, and the update or restart actions already attempted.
When the mismatch remains after an update
Do not move straight to router changes. First establish which side is still old and whether the updated process is the one actually running.

Verify that the player update completed
- Reopen Steam Downloads and check that Enshrouded is not paused, queued, or still writing files.
- Exit and relaunch Steam if the update is not displayed.
- Clear the Steam download cache if the client repeatedly claims to be current while connections fail.
Verify that the server update completed
- Check the host panel’s update or verification result, or review SteamCMD’s completion output.
- Confirm that the server process was stopped and restarted after files changed.
- Confirm that the process launched the directory you updated, not an older copy referenced by a shortcut, service, script, or container.
- Make sure another server instance is not still occupying the expected ports while you test the new one.
Run one clean synchronization attempt
After both sides are confirmed, close the game, restart the dedicated server once more, wait for it to finish starting, and launch the game again. This removes stale client sessions and makes the restart the single synchronization point for the test.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the error continues, provide the server operator or host with the client’s Steam update status, the time the server was updated, the update or validation result, and confirmation of the executable path that was launched. This is more useful than reporting only that “the server is mismatched,” because it identifies whether the problem is a failed download, an old process, or an unintended second installation.

Once the builds match, you may still see a separate symptom such as the server not appearing, failing to answer a query, or being unreachable from outside the host. Those are network or discovery problems, not version mismatch.
The official Enshrouded network guidance documents query port 15637, Steam download-cache clearing, and the Windows command ipconfig /flushdns. Use those measures only after completing the update-and-restart sequence. Changing router rules before the server and client run compatible builds cannot make an incompatible connection succeed.
Signs that you have moved on to a different problem
- The game no longer displays “Version Mismatch,” but the server is absent from the list.
- The server appears, but a connection times out rather than being rejected immediately.
- Other players can connect while one network cannot.
- The server is online in the host panel but its query response is missing.
For these cases, check the documented query-port configuration, DNS cache, firewall, and provider networking instructions. Keep the version troubleshooting separate so that a network change does not obscure whether the update actually worked.
Self-hosted or managed server: which route reduces future update problems?
Hosting is not required to fix a mismatch. The choice matters mainly for who performs maintenance and how much control you retain after a major patch.

Self-hosting is the better fit when you need direct access to files and logs and are comfortable maintaining SteamCMD or Steam Tools. Managed hosting can be more convenient when you want provider-controlled updates and a panel restart, but an automatic rollout can still leave a short period in which players and servers are on different builds.
Preventing the next post-patch mismatch
- After every Enshrouded patch, check Steam Downloads before attempting to join.
- Keep a documented server update procedure that stops the process, updates or validates files, and restarts the same installation.
- For self-hosting, record the executable path, installation directory, save location, and configuration location.
- For managed hosting, learn where the panel reports update status and how to perform a clean restart.
- Back up saves and configuration before changing directories or reinstalling server software.
- Tell players to wait for the server restart rather than repeatedly changing local network settings.
These checks address the failure modes that cause most recurring mismatches: one side updated first, the server process never restarted, or the administrator updated a directory that the live service does not use.
Frequently overlooked details
A client with no download can still be correct
Because server-only hotfixes exist, a player may legitimately see no Enshrouded client download while the server operator still needs to update. The absence of a client patch is not evidence that the server is already compatible.
Restarting Steam is different from restarting the server
Restarting Steam refreshes the player’s update state. It does not replace files on the dedicated server or stop its running process. Both operations may be necessary, and they solve different parts of the synchronization problem.
Validation is not a substitute for launching the right copy
SteamCMD can successfully validate one directory while the live service continues running another. Always pair a successful update with a check of the executable path and a clean process restart.
