To host FTB Presents: Direwolf20 — Season 14, download the matching official server installer, run it in a dedicated directory, launch the generated script, accept the EULA, and expose port 25565 only if people outside your home network need to connect. The pack targets the Minecraft 1.21.1 ecosystem on NeoForge, requires Java 21, and needs at least 4 GB of RAM, with 6 GB recommended by Feed The Beast.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you need before installing
Direwolf20 Season 14 is a version-locked modpack. Every player must use the same FTB release as the server, not merely a similar-looking 1.21 build. The pack runs in the Minecraft 1.21.1 ecosystem and uses NeoForge.

| Modpack | FTB Presents: Direwolf20 — Season 14 | The client and server must use the identical release. |
| Minecraft ecosystem | 1.21.1 | Other Minecraft generations are not compatible with this server release. |
| Mod loader | NeoForge | The loader is installed by the official server package. |
| Java | Java 21 | Feed The Beast lists this as the required runtime. |
| Memory | 4 GB minimum; 6 GB recommended | These are the current published pack requirements, not a guaranteed player-capacity figure. |
| Network | Local address for LAN play; forwarded TCP port 25565 for remote play | Players outside your home network cannot normally reach a private server without router and firewall configuration. |
FTB’s server browser exposes a 1.21 release stream, while other download pages may show older release labels such as 1.17.0 or 1.18.3. Those labels are not interchangeable with your Season 14 installation. Choose one exact server release and have every player select that same release in the launcher.
No official universal player count, CPU specification, storage figure, or bandwidth target is published for this pack. Real capacity depends on simulation load, view distance, active machines, world size, number of players, and the host hardware. Plan to measure performance rather than relying on a theoretical slot count.

Download the correct official server files
Use the FTB server-files page for the release your group will play. The current page identifies 1.21.0 as release ID 100464 and exposes newer release IDs as they become available. Select the exact ID that matches the clients; do not choose a file simply because its Minecraft version looks close.
- Choose a dedicated directory. Create a folder used only by this server, such as
C:FTBDirewolf20S14on Windows or/srv/ftb-direwolf20-s14on Linux. Give the account that will run the server read, write, and execute access. - Back up the directory before the first launch. A separate drive or scheduled backup is preferable. The world, configuration, scripts, and downloaded libraries all live under this installation.
- Download the operating-system installer. Windows provides an executable. Linux provides a
curlcommand; macOS users can follow the Unix-style executable workflow if the selected installer supports their system. - Keep the installer filename unchanged. Feed The Beast says, “The server installer uses the file name to know which pack to install!” Renaming a versioned installer can prevent it from identifying the intended pack or release.
Linux command supplied by FTB
For release 100464, the official Linux form is:
curl -JLO "https://api.feed-the-beast.com/v1/modpacks/public/modpack/126/100464/server/linux"
chmod +x serverinstall_126_100464
./serverinstall_126_100464
If you selected another release, replace the release ID and use the exact filename downloaded by the command. Preserve the versioned name; do not substitute a hand-written filename. Run these commands from the server directory so the generated files stay together.

Run the generated server script
The installer creates the launch files for the pack. FTB’s documented workflow uses run.bat on Windows and run.sh on Linux or macOS.
- Open the server directory after the installer exits.
- On Windows, double-click
run.bat. On Linux or macOS, execute./run.shfrom a terminal. If Unix reports a permission error, grant execute permission to the generated script, for example withchmod +x run.sh. - Watch the console during the first start. The installer downloads the runtime and libraries, creates configuration files, and may stop while waiting for the Minecraft EULA.
- Stop the process cleanly from the console rather than closing the terminal window. A clean stop reduces the chance of world corruption.
The installer is designed to obtain the appropriate Java runtime automatically. Feed The Beast’s documentation states, “No, the server installer will download the correct version of Java for you.” The pack requirement is still Java 21; inspect the generated launch output if the machine has several Java installations and the process appears to be using the wrong one.
Accept the EULA and confirm the first startup
On many Minecraft server releases, the first launch creates an eula.txt file and stops. Historical FTB forum guidance describes changing eula=false to eula=true, saving the file, and starting the script again. The current installer may present the request differently, so use the files and message produced by your selected release.

- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
- Read the EULA request in the console and locate
eula.txtin the server directory. - Open the file in a plain-text editor and change only the acceptance value if the file requires it.
- Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Run the launch script again and wait for a message indicating that the server is ready for connections.
Do not copy a client installation’s mods directory over the server directory. The installer supplies the server-side files for the selected release; mixing files from another version is a common cause of loader and registry errors.
Set memory conservatively and watch performance
Use the published memory floor and recommendation from the requirements table as an allocation target, while leaving enough physical RAM for the operating system, backups, monitoring, and any other services on the machine. Assigning every available gigabyte to Java can make the host less responsive and does not guarantee better tick performance.
If the generated script contains -Xms and -Xmx, set them to a conservative fixed range appropriate for the host and increase only after observing the server. Do not edit unrelated loader arguments unless you understand their purpose.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Garbage-collection pauses: players may see freezes or delayed block updates while Java reclaims memory.
- Tick lag: the console or profiling output may show the server falling behind real time, often because of heavy machines, chunk loading, or too many active entities.
- Out-of-memory errors: the process terminates or reports that the Java heap is exhausted.
- Host pressure: system memory, swap, CPU, and disk activity remain high even when the Minecraft console looks normal.
There is no FTB-published player-count guarantee for Season 14. Record CPU, memory, disk, and tick behavior while your group explores and builds, then adjust view distance, simulation distance, automation, or memory based on the observed bottleneck rather than promising a fixed number of players.
Let people connect
Players on the same home network
Give LAN players the host computer’s private address, such as its address on your home network, and the server port if the client does not discover it automatically. The address can change after a reboot unless the host uses a DHCP reservation or a manually assigned address.
Players outside your home
Remote players need a router rule that forwards the Minecraft port, 25565, to the server computer’s private address. They also need the host operating system’s firewall to allow the server process or that port.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Give the server computer a fixed local address or create a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create a port-forward rule for TCP 25565 from the router’s public interface to that fixed local address. Router terminology varies, so the fields may be called “Port Forwarding,” “Virtual Server,” or “NAT.”
- Allow the Java/server executable or port 25565 through the host firewall. The exact dialog and command differ between Windows, Linux, and macOS.
- Start the server and have a remote player connect using your public address and the default port. Do not publish that address broadly; share it only with intended players.
- If the connection fails, test from a genuinely external network, such as a phone hotspot. Some routers do not support testing their own public address from inside the LAN.
Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet. Keep the operating system and server files updated, use strong account credentials on the host and router, and close the forwarding rule when the server is no longer needed.
Back up and update without breaking the world
Before every version change
- Stop the server cleanly and confirm that the Java process has exited.
- Copy the world directory, configuration files, server scripts, and the complete server directory to a separate backup location.
- Record the current FTB release ID so you can restore the matching files if an update fails.
- Have every player select the same new release before reconnecting.
FTB explains that its installer can pull updated or hot-fixed files without shipping a replacement archive. That is why using the official installer for the selected release is safer than assembling NeoForge, mod, and library JARs manually.
After updating
- Install the selected release in a new directory or make a verified backup before allowing the installer to modify the existing one.
- Start the server with the generated script and read the complete console output.
- Check that the world loads, expected dimensions and machines are present, and no registry or missing-mod errors appear.
- Test a player connection before inviting everyone back.
- Keep the previous backup until the group has played successfully on the new release.
Never copy a newer client’s mods directory into an older server. A client and server that differ by even a small pack revision can fail during handshake or corrupt expectations about blocks, items, and world data.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting is appropriate when you control the machine and network and are comfortable maintaining Java, backups, updates, firewall rules, and uptime. Managed hosting removes much of that infrastructure work, but you trade some control and incur a recurring charge.
| Decision area | Self-hosted at home | Managed service |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | Uses existing hardware and internet service; electricity, hardware wear, and possible upgrades remain your responsibility. | Usually charged as a recurring hosting plan. Current prices and limits were not established here and must be checked for your region and selected plan. |
| Files and mods | Full access to the server directory, scripts, backups, and firewall. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and file access; verify that it can run the required pack release. |
| Backups and updates | You schedule, test, and retain backups and perform release changes. | The provider may offer tools or support, but confirm what is actually included rather than assuming backups are automatic. |
| Uptime and support | You handle power cuts, reboots, Java errors, and hardware failures. | The provider operates the infrastructure and may provide support, subject to its service terms and location. |
| Network setup | Requires a stable home connection, a fixed local address, port forwarding, and firewall work for remote players. | Normally avoids home-router exposure because the server runs in the provider’s network. |
| Memory capacity | You must reserve the pack’s published memory requirement while leaving headroom for the host. | Choose a plan that explicitly supplies at least the pack’s requirement and check whether advertised memory is dedicated or shared. |
Feed The Beast’s official modpack page identifies BisectHosting as its partner and provides an order route. Treat that as a starting point for a managed option, then verify current plan memory, release availability, data-center location, backups, and cancellation terms before paying.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common failures
The installer will not run
- Confirm that you downloaded the server installer for the intended release and did not rename it.
- On Linux or macOS, run it from the directory where it was downloaded and grant execute permission.
- Check that the account has write access to the directory and that security software has not quarantined a downloaded file.
The server stops immediately
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final shutdown line.
- Check the EULA file and follow the acceptance prompt generated by that release.
- Confirm that the installer completed and that the generated launch script, libraries, and configuration files are present.
- Look for a Java-version message; the pack targets Java 21, and multiple local Java installations can cause the wrong runtime to be selected.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
- Compare the exact FTB release ID on the server and every client.
- Remove manually copied mods or files from a different release.
- Install the matching client version through the same official release stream rather than mixing CurseForge labels, launcher profiles, or hand-downloaded JARs.
Friends cannot connect from outside
- Verify that the server is listening and that local players can connect first.
- Check the port-forward destination after every router or DHCP change.
- Confirm that the firewall rule allows the Java process or TCP 25565.
- Test from outside the home network and consider whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding.
The server lags or crashes under load
- Watch Java heap use, host memory, CPU, disk activity, and tick timing together.
- Reduce simultaneous chunk loading and heavy automation before blindly increasing the heap.
- Increase the Java allocation only when the host has unused memory and the evidence points to heap exhaustion.
- Restore the last known-good backup if a world or configuration change causes repeatable failures.
Operational checklist
- Selected one exact Direwolf20 Season 14 release for both server and clients.
- Kept the original, versioned installer filename.
- Installed in a dedicated, backed-up directory.
- Used the generated
run.batorrun.shscript. - Accepted the EULA when requested.
- Reserved sufficient memory without consuming all host RAM.
- Assigned a stable local address before creating a port-forward rule.
- Allowed the server through the firewall only when remote access is required.
- Backed up the world before every update and retained a rollback copy.
- Monitored real performance instead of advertising an unsupported player count.
