How to Counter the New ARC Raiders Gadgets in PvP: Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher, and Yank Grenade

There is not one officially identified “new ARC Raiders gadget.” Frozen Trail 2.0, released October 8, 2026, adds three gadgets that could match that description in player discussions: the Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher, and Yank Grenade. Embark Studios has not published gadget-specific PvP counters, ranges, cooldowns, damage values, stun durations, or immunity rules. The safest current approach is therefore to counter the situations these tools create rather than rely on unverified numbers: break line of sight, keep your squad separated, stop making predictable pushes, and hold an angle that catches the user after committing.

The advice below is tactical inference from the gadgets’ apparent roles, not frame-tested or officially documented behavior. Identify which item you are facing before choosing a response.

What Frozen Trail 2.0 actually confirms

Frozen Trail 2.0 is described by Embark Studios as the biggest update since launch. Its October 8, 2026 notes add Pendola Pass, new map conditions, new enemies, new weapons, amplified weapons, a skill-tree revamp, the Outpost, and several other systems. The “New Items” list specifically names the Grappling Hook, Basic and Advanced Cameras, Tether Launcher, Yank Grenade, Mountaineer’s Detector, and Banjo & Harmonica.

The notes do not call one of those items the new PvP gadget, and they do not provide a counter guide. If a teammate says “watch the new gadget,” ask whether they mean a hook, a tether, or a yank. A wrong identification leads to the wrong defensive habit.

Patch details that matter to interpretation

  • The update changes the existing Snap Hook range from 20 m to 18 m.
  • Snap Hook durability consumption rises from 2% to 4% per use.
  • Snap Hook power cost rises from 50 to 60.
  • Embark says the Grappling Hook was added to give mobility items more differentiated roles. The notes do not state that the Grappling Hook has the same range, cost, or durability behavior as Snap Hook.
  • A revised ARC explosive formula makes explosive weapons such as Hullcracker deal more than 50% additional damage to armor plates and about 30% less damage to fragile parts. That is an ARC-enemy balance change, not evidence that explosives directly counter Raider gadgets or players using them.
  • The Tether Launcher currently has an unavailable repair option; the notes say a future fix is planned. Treat that as a live technical issue, not a PvP weakness you can reliably exploit.

The official news index also lists Store Update 2.1.0 on October 13, 2026, and a PvE matchmaking-toggle beta running October 13–20. Gadget behavior can change quickly during this launch window, so check the latest live notes if an interaction described here stops matching your matches.

Identify the gadget before you counter it

Item Likely fight-shaping effect What is officially quantified First defensive response
Grappling Hook Mobility or rapid repositioning No Grappling Hook range, cooldown, damage, immunity, or recovery values are stated. Use hard cover and hold the landing or exit angle instead of chasing the movement path.
Tether Launcher Potential displacement, pull, or forced movement No range, duration, break rules, immunity, or cooldown values are stated. Repair is currently unavailable. Break line of sight, widen team spacing, and avoid exposing two players to one commitment.
Yank Grenade Potential short-area displacement or disruption No blast radius, pull strength, timing, damage, or immunity rules are stated. Do not stack in one doorway or repeat the same strafe; move behind solid cover before the throw creates value.

These descriptions are practical working categories, not official specifications. Watch the animation and outcome in your own match, then update your response when a current patch changes them.

The four principles that counter all three

1. Break line of sight before the effect starts

Hard cover is more reliable than a late dodge against an item whose exact timing and targeting rules are unknown. A wall, large rock, building corner, or other fully solid obstruction can deny the user a clean setup. Do not confuse a thin railing, foliage, window frame, or partial vehicle body with dependable cover; if the item can still target or pull through that geometry, you have only created false confidence.

When crossing an exposed lane, move from one solid object to the next. If you hear or see a gadget animation, stop trying to win the open-space aim duel and reach the nearest hard corner. Peeking again should be a deliberate re-engagement, not an automatic continuation of the same strafe.

2. Make your movement difficult to script

Repeated left-right strafes, identical shoulder peeks, and predictable pushes give a displacement or mobility tool a stable target. Vary the timing of your peek, pause behind cover, and change the side from which you reappear. This does not require random movement in every gunfight; it means avoiding a rhythm the opponent can anticipate while waiting for a gadget window.

Do not repeatedly chase a player who has just moved with a hook. Chasing along the same line can walk you into the angle they selected before moving. Reset behind cover, listen for the next commitment, and re-enter from a different angle when possible.

3. Keep enough spacing to prevent a multi-player loss

Team spacing is the most important answer when exact area-of-effect rules are unknown. Stand close enough to trade damage, but not so close that one yank, pull, or forced movement exposes two or three players at once. Use offset positions: one player holds the primary angle while another watches the likely flank or landing point from a separate piece of cover.

Spacing is not the same as splitting. A teammate should remain close enough to help after the gadget is committed. The practical goal is to make the opponent choose between affecting one player or giving up their position while trying to catch another.

4. Punish the commitment, not the threat

Hold an angle that covers where the user must appear after firing, throwing, or landing. A gadget normally creates value by changing position or forcing your movement; the user is most exposed during that commitment and the immediate reposition afterward. Focus fire during that window instead of scattering shots at the player who is already safely behind cover.

Assign this angle before the fight. If everyone turns to follow the displaced teammate, the gadget user gets to dictate the second engagement. One player should track the affected teammate; another should keep the original enemy angle covered.

How to play against the Grappling Hook

Before the hook

Assume a hook user wants to turn an unfavorable line into a sudden close-range or elevated engagement. Avoid standing in the middle of a long, unobstructed lane with no alternate cover. When you see a likely launch position, place your crosshair on the most useful arrival route rather than on the point where the player currently stands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not spend ammunition trying to force a player off a position if doing so gives them a free hook escape. First establish a second angle or move to cover that denies the obvious destination. A hook is less valuable when every plausible landing area is already watched.

During the hook

When the user commits, do not mirror the movement by sprinting into the open. Move behind hard cover and let the trajectory finish. If the hook crosses your sightline, take the shot only when you have a stable, recoverable position; a few speculative rounds are not worth losing your own cover.

Keep your squad from rotating as one group toward the hook path. The hooked player may be baiting a turn so a second enemy can swing the original angle. Maintain one watcher on the old position until the user’s team is accounted for.

After the landing

Immediately check two locations: the landing point and the route back to safety. A hook user who lands aggressively may be isolated for a short period; a cautious user may be trying to pull your attention away from a teammate. Call the landing direction, concentrate fire only if your team has a clear advantage, and disengage behind cover if the landing point is protected.

The Snap Hook changes do not provide a Grappling Hook counter by themselves. The official notes reduce Snap Hook range from 20 m to 18 m, increase durability consumption from 2% to 4% per use, and raise power cost from 50 to 60. Those figures describe Snap Hook, not a published set of Grappling Hook PvP statistics, so do not assume either item shares them.

How to play against the Tether Launcher

Break the setup angle

A tether-style tool is most threatening when it has a clear view of a player who cannot immediately reach cover. Fight from corners with a short retreat path. If you are caught in the open, prioritize the nearest solid obstruction over returning fire while the effect is being established.

Use staggered cover rather than a single doorway. If the first player is forced out of position, the second should still have an independent line and should not be standing directly behind the target. This prevents one pull or displacement from exposing the whole team.

Do not volunteer a straight-line chase

After a tether attempt, players often run directly toward the launcher to “break” the threat. That may place you in the attacker’s preferred lane. Move laterally behind cover, then re-peek from an angle that makes the launcher turn. If the tether fails or the user misses, the recovery opportunity belongs to the player who preserved cover and a clean sightline.

Account for the repair issue without treating it as a counter

Frozen Trail 2.0 notes say the Tether Launcher’s repair option is currently unavailable and is scheduled for a future fix. This can affect the owner’s equipment management, but the notes do not establish how often it matters in a fight. Do not build a strategy around the launcher being unable to repair; use cover, spacing, and post-commitment focus fire instead.

How to play against the Yank Grenade

Stop stacking at predictable points

A grenade intended to yank or displace players gains value when several teammates occupy the same doorway, stair landing, revive position, or piece of cover. Enter those locations one at a time with a small offset, and leave a second retreat route whenever the map allows it. If a teammate is already holding the obvious choke, take a supporting angle rather than standing in the same pocket.

React to the throw, not the teammate’s panic

When the grenade appears, move to solid cover if it is available. Do not automatically sprint in the direction a teammate was moved; that can create a second cluster for the next throw. Call the affected player’s new location, preserve your own line, and identify whether the thrower has exposed themselves to make the play.

Use the post-throw window

A thrown gadget commits the user to an animation, trajectory, or position, but the official notes do not publish its exact recovery timing. Hold your shot until you can see the thrower or the angle they must use next. If the grenade only disrupted one player, stabilize first; if it split your team, retreat to a common cover landmark before attempting a rescue.

A repeatable PvP response

  1. Call the item. Say “hook,” “tether,” or “yank” rather than “gadget.” This tells teammates which threat they should expect.
  2. Choose hard cover. Move to a wall, rock, building corner, or other obstruction that fully blocks the likely targeting line.
  3. Set offset positions. Keep one player on the original angle and place the second at a separate retreat or landing angle.
  4. Vary the next peek. Change timing and side; do not repeat the same strafe or doorway entry.
  5. Track the commitment. Watch the user’s launch, throw, pull, or landing instead of chasing the visible movement.
  6. Focus during exposure. Fire together only when the user is committed or recovering in a position your team can safely reach.
  7. Reset after the exchange. Rebuild spacing and cover before pursuing. A successful displacement is often meant to make you overextend.

Solo and squad adjustments

Solo play

Solo players cannot create crossfire, so denial is more valuable than a speculative punish. Fight from cover with a second route available, break line of sight as soon as the gadget appears, and let the opponent reveal whether they are committing aggressively. Do not pursue a hook landing or a displaced enemy across open ground unless you already have the safer angle.

Two- or three-player teams

Use a simple division of labor: one player watches the original enemy angle, one watches the likely landing or throw route, and the third holds a flexible retreat or flank. The exact assignment can change by terrain, but someone must remain responsible for the angle the gadget user wants you to abandon.

Four-player teams

Do not form a single firing line. Use two pairs with enough lateral separation that one unknown displacement effect cannot move both pairs into the same danger zone. Call the affected player’s location and the enemy user’s last known position separately; these are often different and require different teammates to watch.

What is still unknown

Counterplay question Current answer
Exact effective distance Not stated in the October 8, 2026 notes for the three new gadgets.
Whether line of sight is mandatory Not stated.
Cooldown or reuse cost Not stated.
Damage, stun, or pull duration Not stated.
Immunity, resistance, or break rules Not stated.
Frame-tested recovery timing Not stated.
Direct interaction with explosives Not established. The explosive formula change concerns damage to ARC enemy armor plates and fragile parts.

Because these values are absent, be careful with guides or callouts that present a precise meter count, invulnerability window, or guaranteed escape as universal. Those claims require separate, current verification.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Chasing a hook path: You leave cover and follow the opponent’s chosen route. Correction: hold the landing or exit angle and make the user re-enter your sightline.
  • Stacking on one cover object: One displacement can expose several players. Correction: use offset cover and preserve a second retreat lane.
  • Repeating the same peek: The gadget user can time the next commitment. Correction: vary timing, side, and distance from the corner.
  • Turning every player toward the affected teammate: The original enemy angle becomes free. Correction: assign one player to maintain that angle.
  • Assuming Snap Hook numbers apply to Grappling Hook: The patch lists Snap Hook changes but does not publish matching Grappling Hook values. Correction: treat them as separate items until official notes say otherwise.
  • Using the ARC explosive change as a Raider-gadget answer: The documented bonus applies to ARC enemy armor plates. Correction: do not assume it breaks, disables, or damages a player gadget.

How to keep this advice current

Frozen Trail 2.0 launched on October 8, 2026, and Store Update 2.1.0 followed on October 13. The PvE matchmaking-toggle beta is listed for October 13–20. Those dates indicate an active rollout rather than a settled ruleset. Before relying on a precise interaction, read the newest official ARC Raiders patch notes and confirm the item name, platform behavior, and mode. If a patch adds range, cooldown, immunity, or break values, replace these general principles with the documented numbers while keeping the same priorities: deny the setup, preserve spacing, and punish commitment.

Practical verdict

Until Embark publishes exact PvP rules, the reliable counter to the new ARC Raiders gadgets is disciplined positioning. Use hard cover before a hook, tether, or yank can create value; keep teammates offset; vary predictable movement; and focus the user after the gadget commits. Identify the item first, because a Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher, and Yank Grenade ask you to defend against different forms of movement and disruption.
