How to Counter Skeleton Horsemen in Total War: Warhammer III

Use a connected screen of spears or halberds, keep a reserve beside your vulnerable flank, and let protected missile units fire after the horsemen are pinned. Tomb Kings Skeleton Horsemen are fast, shielded light cavalry designed to reach war-machine crews, weapons teams, and exposed ranged units. Their speed and vanguard deployment make them a backline problem, but they are much less threatening when they must fight prepared anti-large infantry in a sustained melee.

The reliable sequence is simple: deny an open lane, receive the charge with spear or halberd units, focus missile fire while the horsemen are held, then counter-charge with a reserve and pursue only after the rest of the Tomb Kings army is under control.

What Skeleton Horsemen do on the battlefield

Skeleton Horsemen fill a harassment role rather than acting as the main shock unit of a Tomb Kings army. The unit reference identifies them as light cavalry suited to attacking war-machine crews, weapons teams, and unprotected ranged units. That role tells you what they are looking for: an isolated flank, an artillery piece without a guard, or a missile unit deployed so far forward that the frontline cannot help it.

Their listed 76 speed lets them choose when to engage and disengage. Vanguard deployment means they can begin closer to your army or approach from an unexpected angle, so a formation that looks safe from the front can still have a gap behind a flank. They are shielded, which helps them endure some small-arms fire while closing, but their light-cavalry purpose does not make them a good choice for grinding through a prepared spear line for a long time.

Think of them as a timing and positioning threat. If they reach an artillery crew before your infantry are engaged, they can force the crew to abandon its weapon and pull nearby units out of position. If they hit a connected line of anti-large troops, their main advantage—speed and target selection—becomes much less valuable.

The class counters that work

Spear and halberd infantry

Polearms are the cleanest general counter. A spear or halberd unit can receive a cavalry charge without giving the horsemen the isolated target they want. Halberds are especially useful when your roster provides an anti-large bonus, while ordinary spears remain valuable as an inexpensive screen. The objective is not to chase the Skeleton Horsemen; it is to hold them in place long enough for the rest of your army to act.

Other anti-large units

Units with an explicit anti-large role are designed to fight cavalry-sized targets. Their value comes from staying power and the bonus applied against large enemies, not from matching the horsemen’s speed. Use them where contact is likely: beside artillery, at the end of a frontline, or behind a gap that a vanguard unit could exploit.

Protected missiles

Missile units are a finishing tool, not a substitute for a screen. Once spears or halberds have pinned the horsemen, concentrated fire can remove models and force a retreat. Firing before the pin is established risks giving the cavalry a clear route to the shooters and can cause friendly-fire problems when the units collide.

The Total War Academy summarizes the interaction in its unit-type guidance: “Many of the golden rules of ancient warfare apply: cavalry are thwarted by spear-wielding infantry, spear-wielding infantry suffer against swordsmen, swordsmen are vulnerable to archers, and archers are in trouble against cavalry.” Skeleton Horsemen are the cavalry problem in that chain; your formation should make sure they meet the spear end of it rather than the archer end.

Choose a counter by the job it must perform

Battlefield job Preferred counter Why it works What to watch
Stop a direct charge Spear or halberd infantry Polearms and anti-large rules are favorable against cavalry. A single unit can be pulled apart if it is left unsupported.
Guard artillery or ranged units Cheap spear screen plus a nearby reserve Creates a bodyguard and a second unit for a counter-charge. Do not deploy the screen so far forward that the missiles are still exposed.
Destroy pinned horsemen Missile units firing into the melee Concentrated fire punishes a target that cannot disengage immediately. Wait until the charge is contained and check firing arcs.
Answer repeated flank attacks Durable anti-large cavalry or mobile responders Can reach a threatened flank before the horsemen reach the backline. Avoid sending fragile shock cavalry into a prolonged grind.
Operate with a tight budget Low-cost spear screen with one or two missile units Provides the pin-and-shoot sequence without requiring an elite roster. Keep the screen connected; quantity does not replace positioning.

When comparing two available units, judge them on anti-large bonus, melee staying power, speed, missile range and damage, and their ability to protect the backline. Cost and campaign availability decide whether the role can be fielded in your current army, but a cheaper unit in the correct position is generally more useful than an expensive unit deployed where it cannot intercept the charge.

Build the minimum reliable answer

For an army with strong missiles

Field a continuous frontline with at least one spear or halberd unit assigned to each exposed side. Place the missile line behind that screen, not on a separate flank. Keep a reserve close enough to step into a breach but far enough back that the first Skeleton Horsemen charge cannot hit both the screen and the reserve at once. Your missiles then have a safe target whenever the horsemen commit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an army with weak or limited missiles

Use additional anti-large infantry and make the battle about containment. The horsemen are still forced to fight on your terms if every route to the backline crosses a spear unit. A second infantry unit can rotate into the engagement after the first absorbs the charge, preventing the cavalry from slipping around the edge while the initial unit is tired.

For a mobile army

A durable anti-large cavalry unit or another mobile responder can shadow the side most likely to be attacked. Do not begin by racing after the Skeleton Horsemen. Hold the responder behind your line, wait for the horsemen to commit, and then hit their flank or rear while they are occupied. Fragile shock cavalry should make short charges and withdraw rather than remain in contact with a spear-supported enemy.

Deployment: remove the lanes they need

  1. Connect the frontline. Deploy spears and halberds with overlapping coverage so there is no open lane directly to artillery or ranged units. A small gap between units can be enough for a fast vanguard unit to pass through.
  2. Protect both ends. Place a reserve behind each vulnerable flank, or put one central reserve where it can reach either side. Vanguard deployment means the threat may appear from an angle you did not expect.
  3. Keep missiles close, but not touching the line. They should be near enough to fire when the screen is engaged, yet far enough away that one charge cannot hit the screen and the shooters together.
  4. Anchor artillery inside the formation. Avoid leaving a war machine on a remote corner with no bodyguard. If terrain forces a separated position, assign a spear unit to that position before the battle starts.
  5. Use terrain to shorten approach routes. A hill, building, forest edge, or map boundary can reduce the number of angles that need guarding. Do not let terrain create a hidden corridor behind your own line.

Keep the army facing the likely approach until the Tomb Kings commit. Turning the whole formation to chase a visible unit can expose the opposite flank to a second charge or allow Skeleton Horsemen to redirect toward an undefended target.

The battle sequence: pin, shoot, finish

  1. Identify the horsemen before contact. Track their position on the campaign map, during deployment, and once the battle begins. Mark which artillery piece or missile unit they are most likely to target.
  2. Let the screen receive the charge. Move the spear or halberd unit into their path and hold it in place. Do not send ordinary infantry, artillery crews, or ranged units to chase them across the map.
  3. Commit the reserve only after contact. When the horsemen are locked with the screen, move the reserve to the side or rear. This prevents an early reserve commitment from being baited away from the backline.
  4. Focus missile fire. Select the pinned Skeleton Horsemen and concentrate fire from the nearest safe shooters. Check the firing arc and avoid scattering shots across several targets.
  5. Counter-charge to force a retreat. A reserve or flank charge adds pressure while the horsemen are already occupied. The aim is to break their attack and remove their freedom to choose a new target.
  6. Pursue selectively. Chase only when the main threat to your artillery and missile line is contained. Their speed allows them to disengage and redirect, so a long pursuit can open the very gap you just closed.

This sequence converts their speed into a liability: every attempt to reach the backline first has to pass through a unit that is ready to hold, and every attempt to leave that fight exposes them to concentrated fire or a counter-charge.

How to use missiles without losing them

Wait for a real pin

Do not rely on a brief contact animation as proof that the horsemen are trapped. Confirm that the spear or halberd unit is actually holding them and that the cavalry cannot immediately turn toward the shooters. A premature volley can draw aggro, cause the horsemen to pull away, and leave the missile unit as the next target.

Concentrate rather than split fire

Skeleton Horsemen are a single harassment threat. Several missile units firing at different targets give them more time to escape. Concentrated fire removes models faster and makes the counter-charge more likely to end the engagement.

Respect shields and angle

The horsemen are shielded, so frontal small-arms fire may be less efficient than a volley delivered after a flank pin. Let the melee unit turn them where possible, then fire from a clear side or rear angle. Keep enough distance that a retreating unit cannot immediately charge the shooters.

Stop firing when the line collapses

If your own infantry are losing control of the melee, redirect fire or pause it. Friendly-fire damage and blocked shots can outweigh the benefit of continuing to fire into a confused scrum. Re-establish the pin first, then resume concentrated volleys.

Mobile counters and counter-charges

Mobile units are useful as responders, not as the first line. A durable anti-large cavalry unit can stand behind an exposed flank and move when the Skeleton Horsemen commit. Strike their side or rear while they are pinned, then withdraw before an enemy infantry block can surround you.

Repeated short charges are safer than leaving a fragile shock unit in contact. Skeleton Horsemen are light cavalry, but they still benefit when a faster or more expensive unit is isolated and surrounded. Your mobile unit should make the horsemen abandon their target, not try to win an unsupported duel in the middle of the Tomb Kings army.

If you have no suitable mobile unit, use a second spear or halberd unit as the reserve. It will arrive more slowly, but it is less likely to collapse if the first engagement lasts longer than expected.

Campaign and army-building considerations

Exact unit names, recruitment costs, technologies, and balance values vary by faction, downloadable content, and patch. The role-based answer remains stable: recruit at least one anti-large or polearm option for each likely route to your backline, then add missiles or a reserve according to your economy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When resources are tight, prioritize a cheap spear screen and one or two missile units over ordinary infantry that cannot stop a cavalry dive. If your roster offers several polearms, compare the anti-large bonus and melee staying power first. Speed, missile range and damage, and backline-protection utility are secondary selection criteria that matter once the basic counter role is covered.

Check the current in-game unit card before committing to a specific build. A balance update can alter attack, defense, charge, health, or recruitment access even when the tactical class relationship remains the same.

Common mistakes and the fix for each

Mistake Why it fails Correction
Sending ordinary infantry or artillery crews to chase the horsemen They are slower and abandon the position that needs protection. Hold the line and let a spear unit or reserve intercept.
Leaving missiles on an exposed flank Vanguard cavalry can reach them before the frontline turns. Place shooters behind the protected line and assign a guard unit.
Charging unsupported cavalry into spears The charge loses value in a prepared anti-large formation. Use a flank charge only after the horsemen are pinned or distracted.
Ignoring the deployment zone behind your army Vanguard deployment can put the threat closer than expected. Inspect the rear and side approaches and station reserves before the battle starts.
Assuming a successful first charge proves they win a prolonged melee Harassment success does not equal sustained-combat superiority. Contain them with polearms, then finish with missiles or a counter-charge.
Pursuing too far The chase opens a new lane to artillery or ranged units. Return the responder to the formation once the threat is contained.

Troubleshooting under pressure

The horsemen are already behind the line

Do not turn every unit toward them. Move the nearest spear or halberd unit to block the path to the most valuable target, order the missiles to reposition behind that blocker, and send one reserve to assist. The rest of the army should continue engaging the main Tomb Kings force so the rescue does not create a second collapse.

Your screen breaks on the first charge

Fall back toward the reserve instead of scattering. A second anti-large unit can create a new pin while the first unit retreats. If no reserve is available, move the missiles away from the threatened lane and accept a temporary loss of firing time rather than allowing the horsemen to reach them unopposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The horsemen keep disengaging

Stop chasing with slow infantry. Keep the screen in place, rotate the reserve to the next likely target, and fire only when the horsemen commit again. Their speed is valuable only when you let them dictate the direction of the battle.

There is no room for a reserve

Shorten the frontline and place the artillery or missile units inside it rather than outside it. A compact formation gives each spear unit mutual support and reduces the number of routes that need to be covered.

Skeleton Horsemen statistics and what they imply

Statistic or attribute Listed value Practical implication
Speed 76 They can reach exposed targets quickly and disengage before slow units catch them.
Melee attack 24 They threaten lightly defended backline units but are not defined by elite sustained melee output.
Melee defence 26 They can avoid some incoming hits, so focused fire and anti-large contact are preferable to scattered attacks.
Charge bonus 34 The first impact matters; receive it with braced or prepared polearms instead of giving them an unprotected target.
Health 5,340 They require concentrated damage or a sustained pin rather than a single casual volley.
Attributes Shielded; very fast; vanguard deployment; crumbling; disintegrating Expect an approach from an unexpected angle, account for shielded frontal fire, and keep pressure on a unit that begins to retreat or lose cohesion.

These values are listed by Total War: Warhammer Wiki contributors on the page accessed 2026-10-19. They are a snapshot of the listed unit data, not a promise that every future patch or downloadable-content ruleset will use identical numbers.

Evidence and patch limits

The Total War Academy’s unit-type guidance provides the underlying counter relationship: cavalry are thwarted by spear-wielding infantry, while archers are vulnerable to cavalry. The Skeleton Horsemen unit reference supplies their light-cavalry role, speed, shield, vanguard deployment, and other listed attributes. Together, those facts support a formation-based answer rather than a single universal unit recommendation.

Exact names, costs, technologies, and balance values can change with patches and downloadable content. Before recruiting for a specific campaign, open the current unit card and verify the anti-large bonus, defensive values, ammunition support, and recruitment availability in your faction. The pin-and-shoot plan remains applicable even when an individual unit’s numbers change.
