Do not file the original again. Send the recipient a corrected statement and keep the new submission identifiers with your records.
The correction method depends on the mistake. An incorrect name, TIN, amount, code, indicator, or recipient is generally a one-step correction. A wrong form type, such as filing Form 1099-MISC when Form 1099-NEC was required, requires two steps: zero the erroneous record, then file the right form as an original return.

Choose the correction method before editing anything
Identify both the type of error and the filing channel. A return filed in the IRIS Taxpayer Portal must be corrected through that portal. IRS Publication 5717 (Rev. 9-2026) states: “You must submit corrections through the portal for information returns submitted through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal.” A software-driven IRIS Application-to-Application (A2A) filing follows a different record-linking process described in Publication 5718.

| Error or situation | Correction method | What you submit |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong payee name or TIN | One-step correction in the same IRIS channel | Corrected record with the right identifying information and amounts |
| Incorrect payment amount | One-step correction | Corrected record showing the right amount |
| Wrong code or indicator | One-step correction | Corrected record with the right code or indicator |
| 1099 issued to someone who should not have received one | One-step correction | Corrected record with zero in every amount field |
| Wrong form type, such as 1099-MISC instead of 1099-NEC | Two-step correction/replacement | First, a zero-dollar correction to the wrong record; second, a new original return using the correct form |
Do not choose a method merely because the error seems small. The form-type distinction controls whether the IRS expects a replacement original after the erroneous record is zeroed.

What you need before starting an IRIS portal correction
Gather the submitted transmission and the recipient’s corrected information first. You should be able to identify the form that contains the mistake and know exactly which fields must change. For a recipient who should not have received a return, confirm that every money amount will be changed to zero.
IRIS is available at no charge to businesses of any size. A Taxpayer Portal filer needs a five-digit Transmitter Control Code (TCC). The TCC identifies the transmitter authorized to use the portal; it does not replace the recipient’s TIN or the form’s other identifying data.
- Access to the IRIS Taxpayer Portal account associated with the original filing.
- The transmission containing the erroneous form.
- The corrected payee name, TIN, address, amounts, codes, or indicators, as applicable.
- The original submission and record details for your internal records.
- A plan for furnishing the recipient a corrected statement after the correction is submitted.
Keep a copy of the original data before editing. The portal creates a new correction transmission, but your own copy helps explain what changed and supports reconciliation with the recipient and your accounting records.
Step-by-step: correct a 1099 in the IRIS Taxpayer Portal
- Locate the original transmission. Sign in to IRIS and find the transmission that contains the erroneous form. Confirm that you are working on the correct tax year, form type, recipient, and submission.
- Select the affected form or forms. Choose the specific record that needs attention. If several records in the same transmission are wrong, select each one that requires the same correction process.
- Click “Correct/Replace.” This starts IRIS’s correction workflow for the selected records. It is the portal function intended for returns that have already been submitted.
- Open “Unsubmitted Forms.” IRIS places the selected forms on the Unsubmitted Forms page so you can edit them before transmission.
- Edit only the fields that need correction, while checking the complete record. Verify the recipient’s name and TIN, address, payment amounts, codes, indicators, and form type. For an unwanted recipient record, set every amount to zero as required for a one-step correction.
- Review the corrected record. Check that the correction corresponds to the original filing and that no unrelated field was changed accidentally. For a wrong-form correction, do not change the erroneous record into the other form type; use the two-step process described below.
- Submit the correction as a new transmission. The correction is not complete merely because the form was edited on the Unsubmitted Forms page. Submit it and save the resulting submission and record identifiers.
After submission, furnish the recipient a corrected statement. Retain proof of the new transmission, the corrected data, and the statement you provided.
One-step corrections for common data errors
Incorrect payee name or TIN
Use the IRIS Correct/Replace workflow and enter the accurate name or taxpayer identification number. This is generally a one-step correction: the corrected record replaces the erroneous information without requiring a separate original return for a different form type.
Compare the name and TIN against the information you are authorized to use for the recipient. A transposed digit, missing character, or wrong legal name can create a mismatch even when the payment amount is right. Correct the recipient statement as well as the IRS submission.
Incorrect payment amount
Use one correction record and enter the correct amount. Review all amount boxes on the form, not just the box where you first noticed the problem. If more than one amount was wrong, correct the complete record in the same transmission.

Incorrect code or indicator
A wrong box code, checkbox, or other indicator is generally corrected in one step. Select Correct/Replace, update the field, review the entire record, and submit the new transmission.
A return filed for someone who should not have received one
If the return was issued to the wrong recipient or should not have been filed for that recipient, use a one-step correction and enter zero for all amounts. Do not leave the payment amounts unchanged while trying to remove the recipient. The zero-dollar correction is the record that tells the IRS the erroneous reporting should be reversed.
Wrong form type: the required two-step correction
A wrong form type is different from a wrong amount or code. For example, if the payment should have been reported on Form 1099-NEC but Form 1099-MISC was filed, use two separate submissions.
Step 1: zero the erroneous record
Start the correction from the original transmission using Correct/Replace. Correct the erroneous record by entering zero in the money amounts. This removes the reporting effect of the wrong form record; it is not the new 1099-NEC.

Step 2: file the correct form as an original
After submitting the zero-dollar correction, create and submit the correct form as an original return with the correct form type and data. Do not label the new correct form as a correction to the wrong form, and do not reuse the erroneous form type.
Keep both submission records: the zero-dollar correction and the new original return. Furnish the recipient a statement that reflects the correct form and information. Filing only the new form, without first zeroing the wrong form, can leave duplicate or conflicting reporting on the IRS record.
A2A corrections and the UniqueRecordId
Organizations that transmit through IRIS Application-to-Application (A2A) use software rather than manually selecting records in the Taxpayer Portal. Publication 5718 explains that an A2A correction may be initiated after an IRS error notice, a transmitter’s review, or a report from the recipient.

Every corrected A2A record must include the original UniqueRecordId. That identifier is built from the original receipt, submission, and record identifiers. It links the correction to the exact record that was previously accepted.

- Preserve the original record identifier.
- Construct and transmit the required UniqueRecordId on the correction.
- Do not transmit the original return again as a new original merely because a correction is needed.
Submitting the original again instead of linking a correction can create duplicate reporting. A2A users should also retain the software’s transmission response and the identifiers returned for the correction so the record can be traced later.
Portal versus A2A: which workflow applies?
| Comparison point | IRIS Taxpayer Portal | IRIS A2A |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Manual filing and correction through the web portal | Software-driven transmission and high-volume workflows |
| How a correction starts | Locate the transmission and select Correct/Replace | Generate a correction through the A2A software workflow |
| Record linkage | Portal-selected original form | Original UniqueRecordId is required for each corrected record |
| Wrong-form handling | Zero the wrong record, then file the correct form as original | Apply the same two-step principle through the A2A transmission process |
| Main duplication risk | Submitting the original again instead of using Correct/Replace | Omitting or misbuilding the original UniqueRecordId |
| Recipient duty | Furnish a corrected statement | Furnish a corrected statement |
Choose the channel that matches how the original return was filed. A return submitted through the Taxpayer Portal must be corrected through the portal; an A2A record must retain its original linkage information.
Do you void, replace, or correct a filed 1099?
For an already filed IRIS return, use Correct/Replace. A VOID box is not a repair mechanism for a return that the IRS has already received.
The paper-form instructions use the CORRECTED checkbox for ordinary amount, code, or checkbox errors. Those paper instructions are useful for understanding the distinction, but they do not change the electronic rule: an IRIS-filed return should be corrected in IRIS.
For paper filings, a TIN or name error and a wrong-form error generally require a two-step process: a corrected zero-dollar record followed by a new original return with the correct identifying information or form type. Do not substitute a paper VOID procedure for the IRIS portal workflow.
When to submit and what confirmation means
Submit the correction as soon as you identify the error. Prompt correction reduces the time that the IRS and recipient have incorrect information and gives the recipient a usable corrected statement sooner.

The IRS said in 2025 that confirmation for an electronically filed 1099 can arrive in as little as 48 hours. That is a published timing statement for receiving an electronically filed return, not a guarantee that every correction will be processed or confirmed within 48 hours. Save the actual confirmation and identifiers for your submission rather than relying on the general timing statement.
Electronic filing is required at the applicable threshold of 10 or more information returns under the IRS’s 2025 guidance. Confirm the threshold for the tax year in which you are filing, because e-file rules can change. IRIS itself is free for businesses of any size, but access to the Taxpayer Portal requires a five-digit TCC.

Furnishing the recipient a corrected statement
A correction has two audiences: the IRS and the recipient. After submitting the corrected record, provide the recipient a corrected statement that matches what you transmitted. Explain which information changed if that will help the recipient recognize the replacement, and retain evidence of when and how you furnished it.
For a return that should never have been issued, the recipient should receive the corrected zero-dollar statement or other corrected statement generated under your normal furnishing process. For a wrong-form correction, furnish the statement for the correct form after the new original return is submitted.
Common failure points and how to recover
You filed the original again instead of correcting it
Do not continue submitting duplicate originals. Identify the original record, use the appropriate IRIS correction workflow, and preserve the identifiers for every submission so you can distinguish the duplicate from the intended correction. If the error involves a wrong form type, follow the zero-dollar-then-original sequence.
You changed a wrong form into the right form in one edit
A 1099-MISC record cannot simply be edited into a 1099-NEC correction. Zero the erroneous 1099-MISC record first, then create the 1099-NEC as an original return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou corrected the amount but left a name or TIN error
Review the full record before submitting. A correction should contain all known accurate fields, not only the first error discovered. Check the recipient statement against the corrected record.
Best Value
You used a paper VOID box for an IRIS filing
A paper VOID mark does not alter an electronically filed IRIS return. Return to the channel used for the original submission and use Correct/Replace.
You cannot trace an A2A correction
Check that the correction includes the original receipt, submission, and record components needed to build the UniqueRecordId. Without the original linkage, the IRS may not associate the correction with the record you intended to amend.
Recordkeeping checklist
- Original transmission identifier and date.
- Original form and recipient record details.
- Reason for the correction.
- Corrected data submitted.
- New correction transmission and record identifiers.
- For an A2A filing, the original UniqueRecordId and the correction response.
- Copy of the corrected recipient statement.
- Date and method used to furnish the corrected statement.
- For a wrong-form correction, both the zero-dollar correction and the new original return.
These records let you demonstrate the sequence of events if the recipient, your accounting team, or the IRS later asks why two transmissions exist.
Worked examples
Example 1: payment amount entered incorrectly
A contractor’s 1099-NEC was filed with $8,500 instead of $8,050. Locate the transmission, select the record, choose Correct/Replace, edit the amount on the Unsubmitted Forms page, review the complete record, and submit the correction. Furnish the contractor a statement showing $8,050.
Example 2: wrong recipient
A business filed a 1099 for a person who did not receive the payment. Start a one-step correction and set every amount to zero. Submit the correction and furnish the recipient the corrected zero-dollar statement required by your furnishing process.
Example 3: 1099-MISC filed instead of 1099-NEC
A nonemployee compensation payment was reported on 1099-MISC. First, use Correct/Replace on the 1099-MISC record and submit it with zero amounts. Second, file a new 1099-NEC as an original return with the correct amount and recipient information. Keep both submission records and furnish the recipient the 1099-NEC statement.
Quick Recap
Key rules at a glance
- Use IRIS Correct/Replace for a 1099 already filed through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal.
- Do not submit a duplicate original to fix a data error.
- Use a one-step correction for name, TIN, amount, code, indicator, and unwanted-recipient errors.
- For an unwanted-recipient record, zero every amount.
- Use two steps for a wrong form type: zero the erroneous record, then file the correct form as original.
- For A2A, include the original UniqueRecordId built from the receipt, submission, and record identifiers.
- Furnish the recipient a corrected statement and retain proof of both the correction and the statement.
- A paper VOID box does not correct an already filed IRIS return.
