Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo move a Mac login keychain and keep its contents accessible, use Setup Assistant during Mac migration, or follow Apple’s Keychain Access export-and-import guidance if you did not use Setup Assistant. For an eligible file-based keychain, you can also copy the keychain file, add it in Keychain Access on the other Mac, and unlock it with the password that protected it on the original Mac. Manual file copying does not apply to Local Items or iCloud Keychain.
Choose the right transfer method
| Your situation | Route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You are migrating to a new Mac with Setup Assistant | Use Setup Assistant | Apple says keychains transfer automatically during this migration. Apple Support: Copy keychains to another Mac |
| You did not use Setup Assistant and need selected items | Use Keychain Access to export and import items | Apple’s item-export guide covers eligible items such as certificates and keys; passwords cannot be exported this way. Apple Support: Import and export keychain items using Keychain Access on Mac |
| You need to move an eligible file-based keychain | Copy the keychain file, then add it in Keychain Access on the destination Mac | The original keychain password is required to access its items. Do not use this method for Local Items or iCloud Keychain. |
| Your data is in Local Items or iCloud Keychain | Set up iCloud Keychain on the other Mac by signing in to your Apple Account | Apple excludes these keychains from the manual file-copy procedure. |
These are different operations: exporting items is not the same as copying a whole keychain file. For Apple’s migration and file-copy directions, see Copy keychains to another Mac; for item export and import, see Import and export keychain items using Keychain Access on Mac.

Copy an eligible keychain file
Use this method only for keychain files that Apple’s procedure supports—not Local Items or iCloud Keychain. Keychain files are usually in the Keychains folder inside the Library folder of your home folder. The exact interface wording or placement can vary with macOS version.
Recommended Free Tools
- Find the Keychains folder. In Finder, hold Option and choose Go > Library, then open Keychains.
- Select the keychain file or files. Files typically end in
.keychain-db. Do not select encrypted folders whose names appear as a series of numbers. - Copy the selected files. Hold Option while dragging them to another folder. Transfer the containing folder to the other Mac using a method you can keep secure. Apple gives AirDrop and a USB flash drive as examples.
- Rename the transferred keychain on the destination Mac. Choose a name that will not be confused with an existing keychain.
- Add it in Keychain Access. Open Keychain Access and choose File > Add Keychain, then select the copied keychain.
- Unlock it with its old password. When prompted to access the copied keychain’s items, enter the password that protected that keychain on the previous Mac.
A keychain file contains sensitive data. Apple advises transferring it safely to prevent unauthorized access and not leaving it on an insecure computer. A USB flash drive is one possible transfer method, not a guarantee of encryption or security.

Export selected items when a whole-file copy is not suitable
Use Keychain Access’s export and import workflow when you need to transfer eligible items rather than a complete file-based keychain. Apple says certificates and keys can be among the items handled this way, but passwords cannot be exported from Keychain Access. If the items you need are passwords, this export route will not move them; use an applicable Mac migration or keychain method instead.

If the copied keychain will not unlock
The login keychain password is normally the same as the Mac user password. If the keychain password differs, it may not unlock automatically; macOS may ask for the keychain password. Try the password that was used for that keychain on the old Mac, rather than assuming the new Mac’s current account password will work.

Why copying one keychain does not move every credential
macOS has file-based keychains and a separate data protection keychain, presented in user contexts as Local Items or iCloud Keychain depending on configuration. Apple’s developer note distinguishes these systems, so copying a file-based login keychain should not be treated as a way to capture every keychain-backed item. Apple also documents device-specific accessibility settings for some app keychain items; that developer guidance is not a substitute for the Mac login-keychain transfer steps above.
For technical context, see Apple’s TN3137: On Mac keychain APIs and implementations and Restricting keychain item accessibility.
