How to Cool a Room Without Central Air Conditioning

Keep heat out, cut indoor heat sources, and ventilate only when outdoor air is cooler and safe. Fans can improve comfort but do not cool a room or protect against extreme heat.

To cool a room without central air conditioning, first keep sunlight and outdoor heat out: shade sunlit windows, seal drafts, and limit heat from cooking. Use fans for personal comfort, not as a substitute for cooling; open windows only when the outdoor air is cooler and safe. If those measures are not enough, a properly sized room air conditioner is the dependable option.

Keep heat from entering the room

Shade sunlit windows

Close drapes or shades during hot, sunny periods. Ready.gov also recommends reflective window coverings designed to send heat back outdoors. These measures reduce heat gain; they do not produce cooled air. Ready.gov’s extreme-heat guidance covers window coverings and other steps for reducing indoor heat.

Seal gaps around doors and windows

Weather-strip leaky doors and windows to reduce hot air entering from outside. This is especially useful when you are trying to keep a room cooler than the outdoors.

Reduce heat made inside

Use the stove and oven less during hot weather; cooking can add heat to the room you are trying to cool. Choose meals that need little or no cooking when practical. CDC and the U.S. Department of Energy both recommend limiting oven use during hot weather. CDC guidance for people without air conditioning includes this step.

Use fans for comfort, not as room cooling

A portable or ceiling fan moves existing air. Air movement can help sweat evaporate from your skin, making you feel cooler, but it does not lower the room’s temperature. Turn fans toward people for comfort when indoor conditions are safe, and switch them off when the room is empty.

There is an important heat-safety limit: CDC guidance updated July 20, 2026 says to use indoor fans only when the room is below 90°F; above 90°F, a fan can increase body temperature. CDC also warns that fans do not prevent heat-related illness in very hot conditions. Read CDC’s current guidance on heat and health and do not rely on a fan alone during dangerous heat.

Ventilate when outdoor air is cooler and safe

When the outdoor temperature falls below the indoor temperature, opening suitable windows can flush accumulated heat. Natural ventilation tends to work best where nights are cool and breezes are regular. If the room has openings on different sides, cross-ventilation can bring cooler air in through a lower window and let warmer air escape through a higher opening.

A securely installed window exhaust fan can push warm air outdoors. Give it a separate intake path—such as an opening on the opposite, preferably shaded, side of the room—so replacement air can flow in. Close windows when the outdoor air becomes hotter than indoors, or when pollution, security, or fall risks make opening them unsafe. The Department of Energy explains natural ventilation and cooling and its limits.

When passive methods are not enough, size a room AC to the space

A window or other room air conditioner actively cools the room and is a better choice when you need dependable temperature reduction. ENERGY STAR’s sizing guidance starts with room area and adjusts for conditions that add to the cooling load. Its listed adjustments are:

Room condition ENERGY STAR sizing adjustment
Heavily shaded room Reduce capacity by 10%
Very sunny room Increase capacity by 10%
Each regular occupant beyond two Add 600 BTU
Unit used in a kitchen Add 4,000 BTU

These are ENERGY STAR room-sizing adjustments, not a guarantee that a particular unit will suit every layout. Check the room-area table and the unit’s installation instructions before buying or installing. Insulate installation gaps, set the thermostat as high as is comfortable, and use a fan to distribute cooled air if needed. See ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guidance.

Protect people if the room stays dangerously hot

If home conditions remain unsafe, reduce time and physical activity in the heat, drink fluids, and go to an air-conditioned place. A library or shopping mall may be an option; CDC and Ready.gov recommend finding an air-conditioned location when needed. If someone develops possible heat-illness symptoms such as cramps, headache, nausea, or vomiting, seek medical care. CDC’s guidance for people without AC and Ready.gov’s extreme-heat advice describe these precautions.
