How to Keep Your Home Cool During a Heat Wave Without Overloading the AC

A practical heat-wave routine: block sun, ventilate only when outdoor air is cooler and safe, cool occupied rooms, and use fans with heat-safety guidance in mind.

Keep heat out first: shade sunlit windows, close them while the outdoor air is hotter than indoors, and limit indoor heat from appliances. When it cools outside, ventilate if it is safe to do so. Use air conditioning to cool occupied rooms, and treat fans as a way to help people feel cooler—not as a way to cool a room or replace air conditioning during dangerous heat.

How do you keep heat from building up indoors?

Block direct sun during the hottest hours

Close blinds, curtains, or shades on windows receiving direct sun. If you are choosing where to add shading, prioritize those windows; exterior awnings or louvers block more incoming heat than interior shades, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Keep hot outdoor air out

Keep windows closed when it is hotter outside than inside. When outdoor air becomes cooler, opening windows can help release accumulated heat; use cross-ventilation where possible, and close the windows again as outdoor temperatures rise. Ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Only ventilate when it is safe and outdoor air quality permits.

Reduce heat from lights and appliances

Turn off unnecessary lights and electrical equipment, and avoid using heat-producing cooking appliances when practical. These steps limit additional heat indoors while the home is already hot.

How should you run the AC without wasting cooling?

Close the doors and windows in the area being cooled, and focus cooling where people are. Set the thermostat as high as remains comfortable rather than choosing an unnecessarily low temperature. The World Health Organization’s heatwave guidance, dated 11 October 2024, suggests setting air conditioning to 27°C and using an electric fan, saying this makes the room feel 4°C cooler. That is heatwave advice, not a universal prescription: follow local public-health guidance, your equipment manual, and the needs of anyone in the home.

When do fans help—and when can they be unsafe?

A fan moves air; it does not lower the room’s air temperature. Moving air can help an occupant feel cooler, including alongside AC. Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says fans may make people feel about 3°C cooler, but that figure is not a room-temperature reduction.

Heat-safety advice sets different limits for fan use. WHO says to use electric fans only below 40°C and warns they may not prevent heat illness above 35°C. The CDC advises indoor fan use only below 90°F, while the EPA advises against fan cooling in a closed room and in rooms in the mid-90s°F or hotter. Because these thresholds differ, follow local health guidance and do not rely on a fan instead of AC or a cooler location when indoor heat is dangerous. The EPA’s guidance is explicit: “Know that portable electric fans do not cool air.” See its fan safety guidance and Australia’s fan comfort guidance.

What AC maintenance can help cooling work properly?

Check the filter and clean or replace it on the schedule and in the manner specified by the unit’s manual. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance. Use a qualified professional for problems beyond basic maintenance.

The DOE estimates routine filter cleaning or replacement can lower AC energy consumption by 5–15%; this is a published estimate, not a guaranteed household saving. The department also describes a potential 20–50% reduction in AC energy use from higher-efficiency air conditioners and other actions to lower cooling costs. That broad figure is not an expected saving for an individual home. See the DOE’s cooling-cost information.

What if the home stays dangerously hot?

Move to the coolest room available. If you cannot keep your home cool, WHO advises spending 2–3 hours in a cool place, such as an air-conditioned public building. Check on older adults and people with chronic conditions, who may be at higher risk in extreme heat. Follow local heat-health advice, especially if anyone develops signs of heat illness.

What should you prioritize for longer-term improvements?

For urgent heat, begin with the steps that need no installation: shade sun-exposed windows, manage ventilation by comparing indoor and outdoor conditions, and limit indoor heat sources. For a longer-term change, exterior awnings or louvers can block more incoming heat than interior shades, according to the EPA. This guidance does not establish specific product models, prices, installation costs, or individualized energy savings.
