How Scientists Detect Lava Worlds Around Other Stars

JWST cannot photograph an exoplanet’s lava surface, but infrared eclipse measurements can reveal its heat and clues to a possible atmosphere.

Scientists do not photograph an exoplanet’s lava surface. They first detect the planet, then infer its conditions by measuring the tiny changes in its star’s light as the planet passes in front of or behind it. For 55 Cancri e, infrared observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) suggest a very hot dayside and a possible atmosphere—but they do not provide a direct image or a definitive atmospheric recipe.

Finding a planet is different from determining whether it is molten

A planet can be discovered through its gravitational effect on its star or by observing it cross in front of the star. Those methods establish that a planet is there; they do not, by themselves, show whether its surface is lava.

NASA’s catalog lists 55 Cancri e as discovered by the radial-velocity method in 2004. The catalog gives it a radius of 1.875 Earth radii, a mass of 7.99 Earth masses, an orbital radius of 0.01544 AU, and an orbital period of 0.7 days. These measurements describe the planet and its orbit, while later JWST observations address its dayside and possible atmosphere. NASA’s 55 Cancri e catalog entry

How JWST separates a planet’s infrared light from its star

JWST cannot resolve 55 Cancri e’s surface as a picture. Its NIRCam and MIRI instruments measure infrared light from the combined star-and-planet system. When the planet moves behind the star in a secondary eclipse, the telescope receives starlight without the planet’s contribution. Comparing that measurement with the system’s light when the planet is beside the star lets researchers estimate the planet’s dayside emission.

Repeating this comparison at different infrared wavelengths produces a thermal-emission spectrum: a record of how bright the dayside is across parts of the infrared. The spectrum is not a photograph. It is a set of measurements that scientists interpret using models of temperature, surface conditions, and possible atmospheric gases. NASA’s overview of Webb observations of rocky worlds

What the 55 Cancri e measurements suggest

A cooler-than-expected dayside

In a NASA/JPL report published May 8, 2024, researchers described a dayside temperature of about 2,800°F (about 1,540°C). That is below the roughly 4,000°F (about 2,200°C) expected by the report for a dark molten surface with no atmosphere or only a thin layer of vaporized rock. The 4,000°F figure is a model comparison, not a separate measurement of the planet.

The cooler measurement suggests that some energy may be moving from the dayside toward the nightside. A substantial atmosphere could help carry heat, though the temperature alone does not establish that an atmosphere is present. NASA/JPL study lead Renyu Hu described the result as “a very strong indication” of energy distribution, “most likely by a volatile-rich atmosphere.” NASA/JPL’s 2024 report on 55 Cancri e

A wavelength feature that may indicate gases

The same report notes a dip in the planet’s emission between 4 and 5 microns. Carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide could absorb light in this region, making the observed feature consistent with one or both gases. Co-author Aaron Bello-Arufe said the result “suggests” an atmosphere containing carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide. It does not conclusively identify either gas or establish the atmosphere’s full composition.

The temperature and wavelength feature reinforce each other as clues: the temperature points toward heat redistribution, while the spectral dip is consistent with absorption by candidate gases. Together they support the possibility of a volatile-rich atmosphere, not a direct detection of a particular atmospheric recipe or a mapped lava surface.

Why scientists compare different rocky worlds

Not every rocky exoplanet is a lava world, and atmospheric conditions change what its spectrum can reveal. NASA’s 2022 explainer contrasted 55 Cancri e with LHS 3844 b, which it described as not hot enough for a molten surface and unlikely to have a substantial atmosphere. The page discusses the scientific rationale for comparing LHS 3844 b’s emitted spectrum with spectra of rocks such as basalt and granite; it does not establish a definitive identification of the planet’s surface rock.

Question 55 Cancri e LHS 3844 b
Surface interpretation Likely molten; the 2024 report describes an extremely hot dayside. NASA’s 2022 explainer says it is not hot enough for a molten surface.
Atmospheric interpretation A volatile-rich atmosphere is possible; the reported evidence includes a cooler-than-expected dayside and a 4–5 micron spectral dip. NASA’s 2022 explainer says it is unlikely to have a substantial atmosphere.
What infrared measurements can help investigate Dayside thermal emission and possible atmospheric absorption. Potential spectral signatures of solid surface materials, compared with known rock spectra.
Evidence cited here NASA/JPL report published in 2024. NASA explainer first published in 2022 and last updated in 2025; it describes the scientific rationale, not a definitive surface-rock result.

The contrast shows why a spectrum needs context. If an atmosphere is present, it can affect both heat transport and the light escaping from the planet. If the atmosphere is thin or absent, the emitted light may provide a different opportunity to study the surface. In either case, researchers compare measured wavelengths with predictions rather than seeing the ground directly. NASA’s Webb overview of rocky-world observations

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

  • It can constrain temperature: the measured infrared brightness helps researchers estimate dayside thermal emission and compare it with physical models.
  • It can test for spectral features: absorption at particular wavelengths can be compared with the expected signatures of candidate gases.
  • It cannot make a surface photograph: the cited Webb observations measure combined infrared light and infer the planet’s properties from changes in that light.
  • It does not yet establish a complete atmospheric inventory: the reported feature is consistent with carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, and the sources describe an atmosphere as possible.

The strongest interpretation comes from multiple clues considered together and tested against models. For 55 Cancri e, the cooler-than-simple-model dayside and the 4–5 micron dip make an atmosphere plausible; neither clue alone settles the question.
