You may not need to convert anything: OBS lists both WebM and MP4 as supported video types. First test your WebM files in the VLC Video playlist source you plan to use. Convert only when playback fails or your target requires MP4; renaming a .webm file to .mp4 does not convert it.
Check whether OBS can play your WebM playlist as-is
OBS’s Media Sources guide lists WebM and MP4 among the supported file types. That is general format support, not a guarantee that every codec, operating system, or local software build will play every file.

- Install VLC if it is not already installed. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene where the playlist will appear. The VLC Video source is the playlist-capable option documented by OBS.
- If you run 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; OBS specifies matching 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add a representative WebM file to the playlist. Check its picture and sound in the actual scene and on the computer that will stream.
- If it plays correctly, keep the original file. Set the playlist’s loop and shuffle controls to suit your use. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default.
Test a representative file before converting a whole folder: playback depends on the streams inside the container as well as the file extension.
Choose streamcopy or transcoding if MP4 is necessary
MP4 is described by the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide as the de facto standard for internet video. The right conversion method depends on whether the source streams work in the MP4 container and whether the player can decode their codecs.

Convert a WebM file with FFmpeg
Try streamcopy first when the streams are compatible
FFmpeg documents -c copy as streamcopy. This command attempts to copy the streams into an MP4 container without decoding and re-encoding them:
ffmpeg -i input.webm -c copy output.mp4Use a new output filename so the WebM remains intact. A failed command, or an MP4 that still will not play in OBS, means streamcopy is not a complete fix for this source and target combination. Try transcoding if the receiving software cannot decode the original streams.

Transcode when the target cannot decode the source
FFmpeg’s basic conversion pattern is:
ffmpeg -i input.webm output.mp4When you do not specify codecs, FFmpeg uses the output muxer’s default encoder for each stream type. Available encoders depend on your local FFmpeg build, and this general command does not guarantee a particular quality level or compatibility result. If the output does not work, select codecs the target supports and adjust encoding settings for your source and requirements.
FFmpeg’s documentation explains streamcopy and transcoding, including why copying streams can fail for some container combinations. MP4 versus WebM is not a quality setting by itself: streamcopy retains the encoded streams, while transcoding re-encodes them.

Validate the converted file in the playlist
- Open the new MP4 in the same OBS VLC Video playlist source you intend to use.
- Check that the picture and audio play, and confirm the file’s duration.
- Test the playlist transition and the intended loop or shuffle behavior before relying on it during a live stream.
Keep the original WebM until the MP4 has passed those checks. OBS’s format list and FFmpeg’s conversion options do not establish compatibility for every individual file or local software build.
Troubleshoot common conversion and playback problems
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Confirm that VLC is installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, check that VLC is 64-bit too.
- The WebM file is listed but has no picture or sound: Test it in the intended OBS scene, not just by checking its extension. If the target cannot decode its streams, convert and test an MP4 copy.
- The streamcopy command fails: The source streams may not suit the MP4 container. Try transcoding rather than repeatedly changing the filename or extension.
- The MP4 exists but still does not play: The source codec may not be supported by the target, or the selected output codecs may not suit it. Choose codecs supported by the target and test the output again in the same OBS source.
- Playback works, but the playlist does not behave as intended: Check the VLC Video source’s loop and shuffle controls, then test a full playlist transition.
