It supports very large files and works across those computer platforms. If the drive will stay on one operating system, NTFS is a strong Windows choice and APFS suits Mac-only storage. Before formatting, check that the TV, console, recorder, or other device that will access the drive supports your chosen file system.
Choose based on where the drive will be used
| File system | Best fit | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| exFAT | Moving large recordings between Windows and macOS | Apple lists exFAT as a Windows-compatible option for volumes over 32 GB. Check compatibility with any TV, console, recorder, or other device that will read the drive. |
| NTFS | A drive used primarily with Windows, especially when Windows file-system features matter | Microsoft lists features including journaling, ownership, access controls, encryption, compression, and quotas. SanDisk says macOS mounts NTFS as read-only without a third-party driver. |
| APFS | A drive used only with a Mac | Apple lists APFS for Mac computers. SanDisk says Windows does not detect APFS without a third-party driver. |
| FAT32 | Older or specific devices that require it | Microsoft lists a maximum individual file size of 4 GiB, so a larger recording cannot be stored as one file. |
For exFAT, Microsoft describes a 64-bit file-size field that enables applications to use very large files. Its file-system comparison lists a maximum file size of 264−1 bytes for exFAT and NTFS; that is a file-system limit, not a guarantee that every device or application can create files of that size.

Why exFAT is usually the practical choice for stream recordings
A recording can exceed FAT32’s 4 GiB per-file limit, preventing it from being copied as one file. exFAT avoids that particular constraint and is a practical shared format for large files on Windows and macOS. SanDisk reports read/write mounting on both systems.

This is a compatibility recommendation, not a performance ranking: the cited guidance does not establish that one format is faster for YouTube recordings. Nor does it establish a special file-system requirement from YouTube itself. The choice follows from the size of the files you need to store and the operating systems or devices that must read them.

Check the playback or recording device before formatting
A format supported by your computer is not necessarily supported by a TV, console, camera, or recorder. QNAP specifically advises users to verify that a device is compatible with exFAT before selecting it. Check the documentation for the exact device that will read or write the drive; do not assume compatibility from its USB port alone.
Format the drive without losing files
- Back up anything you need to keep. Formatting can erase the drive’s existing contents.
- Choose the format for your actual workflow. Select exFAT for sharing large files between Windows and macOS; choose NTFS for a Windows-focused drive when its additional file-system features are useful; choose APFS for Mac-only storage. Use FAT32 only when a device requires it and the 4 GiB file limit is acceptable.
- Format through your operating system’s disk utility. Select the external drive and the intended file system. Exact interface labels vary by operating-system version.
- Verify the drive on every device that needs to use it. If a playback or recording device does not support the format, choose a format it supports or use a different drive for that device.
These format choices do not determine how much capacity you need. The cited guidance does not establish a required drive size for stream videos; capacity depends on the recordings you plan to keep.
