You may not need to convert WebM at all: OBS Media Source supports WebM files and has a Loop option. If your playback software or workflow specifically requires MP4, use FFmpeg to re-encode the video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then test the result in the software that will run the loop. File conversion and YouTube’s live-stream encoder settings are separate steps.
Check whether your loop needs MP4
For a local OBS loop, first try the WebM file directly. OBS lists WebM among its supported video formats, and its Media Source includes a Loop setting that starts the file again after playback ends. In OBS, add or select a Media Source, choose the WebM file, and enable Loop in the source properties.

If the file plays correctly and loops as intended, conversion is unnecessary. Convert only when the target software, encoder workflow, or file-handling requirement calls for MP4. Renaming a file from .webm to .mp4 does not convert its contents or make its codecs compatible.

Convert WebM to MP4 with FFmpeg
For a broadly compatible MP4 starting point, re-encode the video to H.264 and the audio to AAC. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the source file, and run:
ffmpeg -i input.webm -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -movflags +faststart output.mp4Replace input.webm and output.mp4 with your actual filenames. If a filename contains spaces, put it in quotation marks, for example "my loop.webm".

This is an example, not a universal or YouTube-mandated value.-preset mediumbalances encoding speed and compression efficiency. Slower presets can take longer; the best choice depends on your machine and needs.-c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000encodes audio as AAC at the example bitrate and sample rate. Adjust the audio bitrate if the source or your requirements call for it.-movflags +faststartmoves MP4 metadata toward the beginning of the file to support progressive playback.
The command re-encodes both streams, so it takes processing time and can change quality. FFmpeg’s CRF, preset and audio bitrate here are practical starting choices, not prescribed settings for every source or live stream.
When stream copying is worth trying
If you only need to change the container and the existing video and audio codecs are compatible with MP4 and your playback software, you can try a remux without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -c copy output.mp4Stream copy avoids decoding and encoding, so it can be faster and avoids re-encoding loss. But it does not change the codecs, apply filters, or guarantee that the source streams can be carried in the target container. A remux may fail or produce a file the intended software cannot play. Check the output and test it in the actual loop workflow; if compatibility is the reason for conversion, use the H.264/AAC re-encode instead. FFmpeg documents stream copy as a way to change container format or container-level metadata: FFmpeg stream copy.
Verify the MP4 before building the live loop
- Open the output in the target software. Confirm that both picture and audio play. A file opening in a general-purpose player does not by itself prove that the encoder or broadcast software accepts it.
- Check the loop boundary. Let the file reach its end and confirm playback restarts cleanly. Listen for a cut, silence, or abrupt volume change at the transition.
- Check audio throughout playback. Listen near the start, middle and end for dropouts or drift relative to the picture.
- Run a live test before the intended broadcast. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, using audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
These are verification steps to perform on your own file and setup, not a claim that a particular conversion or stream has been tested.

Configure YouTube live ingest separately
Making an MP4 for playback does not configure the stream sent by your encoder to YouTube. For RTMP/RTMPS live ingest, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Apply the settings to the live encoder, not just to the file conversion.

YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 and H.264 for uploaded video and lists AAC-LC as an audio option. Those are upload-file recommendations; they do not replace the live-ingest settings above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Troubleshoot common conversion and loop problems
- FFmpeg says it cannot open the input: check the filename, extension and current folder. Use the full file path or quote a path that contains spaces.
- The MP4 conversion fails while copying streams: the source codecs may not be suitable for the MP4 container. Re-run the H.264/AAC re-encode command.
- The MP4 is created but the loop software will not play it: confirm that the application supports the codecs and pixel format in the output. Try the H.264/AAC command, then test that exact file in the target software.
- The picture works but audio is missing or unusable: check that the source contains an audio stream and verify that the output’s AAC audio plays. If the source has no audio, encoding cannot create the missing program audio.
- The loop has a pause or jarring transition: inspect the end and beginning of the source. Conversion cannot make unrelated endpoints seamless; edit or replace the source if the transition itself is the problem.
- YouTube reports stream-health or connection problems: check the live encoder’s ingest settings and available upload capacity, then run another preview test. The file’s MP4 format alone does not establish that the outgoing live stream is configured correctly.
