Can OBS Play ProRes Files in a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream?

Yes—with a compatibility check. OBS can play many ProRes files in MOV containers, and it can loop one file or repeat a multi-file playlist. But support for the MOV container does not guarantee that every ProRes profile will decode in every OBS installation. For YouTube, OBS must encode the played media into a live-ingest format YouTube supports; ProRes is a source-file codec, not a documented RTMP/RTMPS ingest codec.

What OBS can play—and what that does not guarantee

OBS lists .mov among the file types supported by its Media Source, and its format guide lists ProRes in MOV and MKV containers. Container support and codec decoding are separate checks: a file can have a supported extension yet still fail because of its ProRes profile, file integrity, operating system, or the decoder available in the installed build. Check your particular file in the OBS installation you plan to use before relying on it for a long stream. OBS Media Sources · OBS video formats

OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can play a playlist. FFmpeg documentation lists ProRes decoding support, but that does not establish which FFmpeg version or configuration is included with a particular OBS or VLC package. FFmpeg supported formats and codecs

Choose the right OBS source

What you want to play OBS source What to configure
One local video file Media Source Select the file and enable Loop to restart it when playback ends.
Several files in sequence VLC Video Install VLC matching OBS’s architecture, add the files to the playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS says 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.

The OBS guide documents VLC Video on Windows, macOS, and Linux when VLC is installed. Verify the source plays both picture and audio locally before starting a stream. OBS Media Sources

Set up a ProRes file or playlist for YouTube

  1. Confirm local playback. In OBS, add a Media Source for one file or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Play it and check that both image and sound are present. If it fails, test another known-good file and confirm the exact ProRes file opens in a compatible player; do not assume the extension alone proves decoder support.
  2. Configure YouTube Live. Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio and use its stream key in OBS. Keep the key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest.
  3. Configure OBS’s outgoing encoder. The ProRes file is decoded on the computer; OBS then encodes the live output. YouTube documents H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 frames per second, with CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Its documented audio codecs are AAC or MP3. Choose a bitrate that suits your output resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity; the ProRes file’s bitrate is not the target YouTube ingest bitrate. See YouTube live encoder settings.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring accessibility and audio/video quality. A local loop alone does not verify the complete path from OBS through your network to YouTube. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  5. Monitor the computer and stream. A loop repeats its source; it does not make the host machine, OBS, network connection, or stream immune to interruption. Keep an eye on the YouTube Live Control Room and the host system during operation.

Copyright and the right to stream the playlist

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for every video and audio track in the playlist. A file playing correctly in OBS does not establish permission to stream it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s copyright rules and any applicable licences for the material you plan to use; do not assume that a recording is cleared merely because it is available online or because you own a copy.

Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable, so a continuous 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete archive or full rewind buffer. If viewers need dependable replay or rewind, consider dividing the schedule into shorter streams and check the resulting archives. YouTube’s guidance is at Create a live stream with an encoder and Turn on DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The MOV file will not open or shows no picture: MOV container support does not ensure that this ProRes profile decodes in your installed build. Verify the file itself, try it in OBS’s Media Source, and test VLC Video with VLC installed if appropriate.
  • The playlist stops after the last item: Check that you added a VLC Video source, populated its playlist, and that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file, use Media Source and enable Loop.
  • VLC Video is missing or unavailable: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube rejects the stream or reports an encoder problem: Check OBS’s outgoing settings against YouTube’s documented ingest requirements: RTMPS is recommended; use H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video, CBR, a two-second recommended keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio.
  • The picture works but audio is absent or poor: Check the source’s audio and OBS’s audio routing, then verify the sound in YouTube’s preview during a test stream.
  • The broadcast stops despite looping: Looping only addresses media playback. Check the host machine, OBS, network, and YouTube stream health; a loop is not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough or the archive is incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may have limited or unavailable DVR, and automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours. Use shorter segments if archives or rewind are important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos—not a live camera feed—and is for YouTube only. The computer at home does not have to stay on; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
