How to Add a Static Background to Vertical Clips in a YouTube Playlist Stream

Add a still background below vertical footage in a 9:16 editing project, export the result, and then organize the finished clips in a YouTube playlist.

To put a static background behind vertical clips in a YouTube playlist stream, add the background to each clip in a video editor before uploading it. In a 9:16 project, place a still image or color layer below the vertical footage, adjust the footage to reveal the background, export, and then add the finished video to a YouTube playlist. A playlist organizes uploaded videos; it does not document a way to add a background to them.

Why the background has to be added before you make the playlist

YouTube’s playlist tools let you create playlists from videos or Shorts and manage their contents. They do not describe a setting for compositing a new background into a video. Make and export the edit first, then add that finished file to a playlist. YouTube’s playlist instructions explain creating and managing playlists.

This is different from a vertical live-stream layout. YouTube Live Control Room documents options such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked for arranging a vertical live stream. Those are live-layout choices, not a documented way to place a custom still behind prerecorded clips in a playlist; YouTube also says the vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. YouTube’s live-streaming guide covers those options.

How to put a background behind vertical clips

The following is a general layered-editing workflow for an editor that supports video and image layers. It is not a set of tested button-by-button instructions for a particular app.

  1. Start a 9:16 project. Choose a vertical canvas matching the format you intend to publish. A 9:16 frame gives you room to show a vertical clip while filling the rest of the canvas with your background.
  2. Add the background layer. Put a still image or solid-color layer on the lower video track and extend it to cover the clip’s full duration.
  3. Place the clip above it. Add the vertical footage on a higher layer. Scale and position it so the background shows wherever the footage does not fill the frame.
  4. Check framing and readability. Preview the entire clip for exposed gaps, unintended black bars, cropped faces, and captions or other details that are hard to read against the background. Adjust the image or footage placement as needed.
  5. Export and upload. Export the composited clip using settings suitable for your channel, then upload that finished video to YouTube.
  6. Add it to a playlist. Create a playlist or open an existing one and add the uploaded video or Short. YouTube notes that reordering is unavailable for a playlist containing only Shorts. YouTube Studio’s playlist guidance covers managing playlist contents.

When YouTube Shorts Green Screen may be enough

YouTube’s Shorts guide describes Green Screen as an in-app feature for changing a Short’s background, alongside basic Shorts editing. It can be an option when you are making an individual Short in the YouTube app. The guide does not establish Green Screen as a bulk workflow for preparing a collection of prerecorded clips for a playlist stream. YouTube’s Shorts guide describes the feature.

If you need the background to stay identical across many clips, or need control over each clip’s framing, a layered edit gives you a way to set that up clip by clip. The available guidance does not compare the output quality or editing speed of Green Screen with third-party editors.

Or let it run in the cloud

After you have edited and uploaded the clips, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream. It does not add a background to clips, and it does not stream from a camera: prepare the background in your editor first. To use it, upload the finished recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo then loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
