Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor screenshots with small interface text, icons, thin rules, or diagrams, start with lossless WebP. It preserves the source pixels, unlike lossy WebP, which discards image data and can soften text edges or add colored fringes. Keep the PNG original, compare the converted file at its intended display size, and use lossy WebP only if its smaller file size is worth the visible trade-off.
Choose the right format and compression mode
| Option | Text and edge fidelity | File size | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless; retains the original image data. | Measure the actual PNG; there is no guaranteed size comparison for an individual screenshot. | Keep as the source and use when PNG is required by your publishing workflow. |
| Lossless WebP | Preserves the source image data, so text and edges are not degraded by lossy compression. | Can be smaller than PNG, but the result varies by image and encoder. Google documentation reports a 26% smaller comparison against PNG; the reviewed page does not state a publication year, and that figure is not a promise for your screenshot. Google: Lossless and transparent WebP images. | Usually the best first export for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art. MDN recommends lossless encoding for these types of images. MDN: Image file type and format guide. |
| Lossy WebP | Discards image data; compression can blur text and create colored fringes around sharp edges. | Check the output size for your particular image; no universal size reduction or quality setting is established. | Use when smaller files matter enough to test the visual result carefully. |
WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, so selecting WebP alone does not guarantee that an export preserves the source exactly. It also supports transparency, which means transparent screenshots or graphics do not automatically need to remain PNG. Google: WebP compression and RFC 9649: WebP image format.

Convert a screenshot while protecting text
- Keep the PNG. Treat it as your source file and export a separate WebP copy so you can return to the original if the conversion fails your checks.
- Export lossless WebP. Use the lossless option in your image editor or conversion utility. Google’s documentation also describes
cwebpas a command-line conversion option: Google: cwebp documentation. - Compare file sizes. Check the exported WebP against the PNG for the same screenshot. If the lossless result does not reduce the size enough for your needs, create a separate lossy test copy rather than replacing either original.
- Inspect the images at reader scale. View the PNG and WebP at the size the tutorial will display them, then zoom in. Check small labels, one-pixel rules, icon boundaries, and colored edges for softness, missing detail, or fringes. This is a practical visual check, not a guarantee that a particular setting will work for every image.
- Confirm publishing compatibility. Check that your CMS, editor, or documentation platform accepts WebP uploads; browser support does not guarantee that every publishing workflow accepts the format.
- Add a fallback when needed. If readers may use browsers or applications that do not support the selected format, provide a PNG or other suitable fallback. MDN documents using
<picture>with a PNG or JPEG fallback for browser delivery: MDN: Image file type and format guide.
When to use lossy WebP
Lossy WebP is a reasonable test when file size is a priority and the screenshot remains clear after compression. Do not choose a quality-slider number by habit: the right setting depends on the image and encoder, and no universal setting or guaranteed reduction is established here. Export a test copy, compare it against the PNG at the actual rendered size, and reject it if text, thin lines, or colored edges become harder to read.

What to check before publishing
- Small text: Labels and menu items should remain easy to read at the size used in the tutorial.
- Thin details: One-pixel dividers and diagram lines should not appear broken or softened.
- Edges and color: Look for blur or colored fringes around text and icons, especially in lossy exports.
- Transparency: If the graphic has a transparent background, verify that it remains transparent in the exported WebP.
- Delivery: Check upload support in the publishing system and provide a fallback where the delivery context calls for one.
