Test the original file in the software you plan to use; convert it to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio only if playback compatibility or another part of your workflow calls for it.
Does YouTube accept iPhone MOV files?
Yes. YouTube lists MOV among its supported video upload formats, so converting an iPhone recording to MP4 is not inherently required for upload compatibility. For recommended upload encoding, YouTube specifies an MP4 container, H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio, and recommends encoding at the frame rate at which the video was recorded. Those are upload recommendations, not a requirement to convert every MOV file.

A YouTube live stream has a separate encoder path. A file’s format and a live encoder’s output settings solve different problems: first make sure the recording plays correctly in your chosen software, then configure that software’s stream output to YouTube’s live guidance.
Try the original MOV before converting
OBS Media Source supports MOV and MP4 files and has a Loop property that restarts a file after playback completes. Add the original recording as a media source and test the complete playback cycle, including its audio. If it plays and loops as intended, conversion is unnecessary for this OBS workflow.

Conversion may be useful if the file fails in the particular software you need to use, or if you specifically need an MP4 copy for another workflow. A conversion creates a new encoded file; keep the original if its quality or metadata matters.
Convert an iPhone MOV to MP4 with HandBrake
- Move the recording to your computer. Use the current transfer method for your operating system. Transfer instructions vary between Mac and Windows; consult Apple’s current instructions for your device and computer rather than assuming the steps are identical.
- Open the source in HandBrake. Choose the iPhone MOV file as the video source.
- Choose an MP4 preset. HandBrake’s “Fast 1080p30” preset creates an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio and targets up to 1080p at 30 fps. It is a broadly compatible starting point, not a way to preserve a higher resolution or frame rate unchanged.
- Check the output settings. Where practical, match the source recording’s frame rate. If the source is above 1080p or 30 fps and retaining those characteristics matters, select suitable output settings rather than assuming the Fast 1080p30 preset will preserve them.
- Start the encode and test the result. Save the MP4 separately, then play it through the software you intend to use and confirm that both video and audio behave as expected. Keep the original MOV until you have verified the converted copy.
HandBrake’s preset is an encoding choice: conversion can change the file’s picture, sound, size or metadata. The cited format recommendations do not establish a guaranteed output quality or file size for an individual iPhone recording.

Loop the video in OBS
- Add the media: in OBS, add a Media Source and select the original MOV or converted MP4.
- Enable Loop: open the source properties and turn on Loop. OBS defines this property as specifying whether the file plays again after playback has completed.
- Check the transition: let the file reach its end and confirm that video and audio restart as intended. Check for unwanted gaps or abrupt audio changes in your actual scene.
- Set up YouTube Live separately: configure OBS’s stream output for YouTube rather than treating the local file’s encoding settings as the live encoder settings.
Configure the live stream for YouTube
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264 among supported video codecs. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. The guidance supports up to 60 fps. Choose YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you actually stream; do not use upload-file recommendations as a substitute for live encoder settings.

For the exact bitrate values by resolution and frame rate, use YouTube’s current live encoder settings page: YouTube Live encoder settings. These are platform recommendations, not measurements of the MOV file or a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain a stream.

Common problems and what to check
- The MOV does not play in the chosen software: check whether that specific player supports the file. Try a HandBrake MP4 encode using H.264 video and AAC audio, then test the new file.
- The converted video looks different or is smaller in frame size: check the selected preset and output settings. Fast 1080p30 targets up to 1080p at 30 fps; it may not suit a source whose resolution or frame rate you want to retain.
- The file plays but does not restart: confirm that Loop is enabled on the OBS Media Source and test through the end of playback.
- The loop restarts but the live stream fails or drops: inspect the YouTube live encoder settings and stream connection separately from local file playback. The fact that a MOV plays in OBS does not establish that the live output is correctly configured.
- You are unsure whether conversion helped: compare the original and converted files in the actual playback setup. YouTube accepts MOV uploads, and OBS lists MOV and MP4 as supported Media Source formats, so changing containers alone is not automatically necessary.
Copyright and YouTube live rules
Using a video you recorded does not automatically establish that every element in it is cleared for a public live stream. Check rights for music, footage and other material you did not create or license, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming policies before running a loop. A looped or pre-recorded video still has to comply with YouTube’s rules; file conversion does not change those obligations. Use this copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid.
