Estimate storage by multiplying the recording’s combined bitrate by the number of seconds you will keep, then dividing by 8. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings for 1080p30—10 Mbps video plus 128 kbps stereo audio—a continuous 30-day recording works out to about 3.28 TB decimal (about 2.98 TiB). That is a calculation from the selected bitrate, not a guaranteed file size: actual storage depends on sustained bitrate, recording hours, and copies retained.
Calculate storage from bitrate and recording time
Use the combined bitrate of the video and audio being recorded, along with the actual recording duration:

Storage in bytes = total bitrate in bits per second × recording duration in seconds ÷ 8
For decimal units, divide bytes by 1,000,000,000 for GB or 1,000,000,000,000 for TB. For binary units, divide by 1,073,741,824 for GiB or 1,099,511,627,776 for TiB. A TB and a TiB are not the same amount, so label the unit convention when planning capacity.

Worked example: 30 continuous days at 1080p30
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps H.264 video for 1080p30 and 128 kbps stereo audio. Together, those settings amount to 10.128 Mbps, or 10,128,000 bits per second. Thirty uninterrupted days contain 2,592,000 seconds:
10,128,000 × 2,592,000 ÷ 8 = 3,281,472,000,000 bytes

That is approximately 3.28 TB decimal, or 2.98 TiB. The same calculation gives approximately 4.56 GB decimal per hour. These are arithmetic estimates using the stated bitrate and duration, not measured file sizes or a universal 1080p rule. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Adjust for fewer recording hours
Thirty days equals 720 hours only if recording runs continuously. If the library contains eight recorded hours per day, that is one-third of the continuous duration: about 1.09 TB decimal at the example bitrate, before adding headroom. For any schedule, multiply the per-hour estimate by the actual recorded hours you plan to retain.

Use the bitrate for your actual recording settings
Resolution by itself does not determine storage. The relevant input is the average or configured bitrate of the saved recording, including audio when it is specified separately. For example, YouTube lists 6 Mbps H.264 video and 128 kbps stereo audio for 720p60. At a combined 6.128 Mbps, 30 continuous days calculate to about 1.99 TB decimal.
For variable-bitrate recording, the file may differ from a calculation based on a configured target. If you do not know the average, plan using the highest plausible sustained bitrate, the full retention duration, and a buffer you choose. Pauses, separate audio tracks, remuxing, or retaining multiple quality copies can also change the space required.

Plan the library capacity and backup
- Start with the full retention window: use actual recording seconds, not simply “30 days,” if streams run only part of each day.
- Add headroom: leave space for filesystem overhead and recording variation. There is no universal reserve percentage; choose one based on how much bitrate and duration may vary.
- Count copies separately: if you keep a second local copy, include its full capacity in your plan. A backup drive is separate from the space needed for the primary library.
- Check usable formatted capacity: a drive’s usable space after formatting may be lower than its advertised nominal capacity. Compare usable capacity, price per usable terabyte, connection type, sustained transfer needs, warranty, and portability.
A high-capacity external hard drive is the straightforward category for a single local archive; a second drive is an option if you want a separate copy. A NAS may suit a larger, shared, or expandable archive, but it is not required to do the calculation.

Do not multiply storage by YouTube playback resolutions
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers. Those viewer renditions do not mean your local source recording must be multiplied by the number of playback resolutions. Size local storage from the files you actually save, including any extra copies or versions you retain.
Does YouTube archive the live stream automatically?
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a longer stream may not be captured. That 12-hour figure is an archive caveat, not a file-size limit. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup; if you need a dependable local library, size and retain those files independently of platform processing. YouTube’s API documentation says a completed broadcast is converted into a video and availability can be delayed in relation to broadcast length. See YouTube Help’s live-stream archive guidance and the YouTube Live Streaming API LiveStreams reference.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is keeping uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
