HTML is markup, not an image, so calling an image encoder on the raw HTML string will not capture its visual appearance.
What the browser conversion actually does
A browser-based conversion has two stages: render a DOM node and its styles into an image-like surface, then encode that surface as WebP. A DOM-to-image library can handle the rendering stage; html-to-image, for example, documents node export methods including toBlob() and uses SVG foreignObject in its rendering approach. The result can vary with browser support, CSS, fonts, images, and whether external assets are accessible.

The code below uses a DOM-to-image library to render a selected element, then asks the resulting canvas to create a WebP Blob. It checks the actual MIME type before offering a download, because browsers can fall back to PNG when WebP encoding is unsupported.
Convert an element to WebP with JavaScript
1. Select the content
Mark the page region to export with an ID, or select it by another stable CSS selector. This example captures only the element with id="capture", not the whole page.

2. Load a DOM-to-image library
Install html-to-image in your project and import it into your JavaScript module:
import * as htmlToImage from 'html-to-image';
Use the library version and bundler setup appropriate to your project. The library is responsible for turning the DOM node into a canvas; the browser canvas API handles WebP encoding.
3. Render, encode, verify, and download
const node = document.querySelector('#capture');
const status = document.querySelector('#export-status');
if (!node) {
throw new Error('Could not find #capture');
}
htmlToImage.toCanvas(node)
.then((canvas) => new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
canvas.toBlob((blob) => {
if (!blob) {
reject(new Error('The browser did not create an image Blob'));
return;
}
if (blob.type !== 'image/webp') {
reject(new Error(`WebP encoding was not used; browser returned ${blob.type || 'an unknown type'}`));
return;
}
resolve(blob);
}, 'image/webp', 0.85);
}))
.then((blob) => {
const objectUrl = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = objectUrl;
link.download = 'capture.webp';
link.textContent = 'Download WebP';
document.body.append(link);
// Revoke only after the user has had time to use the link.
link.addEventListener('click', () => {
window.setTimeout(() => {
URL.revokeObjectURL(objectUrl);
link.remove();
}, 1000);
}, { once: true });
if (status) status.textContent = 'WebP ready. Use the download link.';
})
.catch((error) => {
if (status) status.textContent = `Export failed: ${error.message}`;
console.error(error);
});
In this example, 0.85 is a chosen lossy-quality value, not a universal best setting. The canvas quality argument ranges from 0 to 1 for lossy formats. Test the output on your own content; for crisp text, diagrams, logos, and line art, use a lossless path where available or inspect the result closely for edge artifacts.

4. Keep the object URL alive long enough
URL.createObjectURL() gives the download link a temporary URL for the Blob. Do not revoke it immediately after creating the link: the user still needs time to activate it. Revoke it when it is no longer needed, as the example does after the click.
Use the canvas API directly when you already have a canvas
If your page already draws the desired content onto a canvas, skip DOM rendering and encode that canvas directly:
canvas.toBlob((blob) => {
if (!blob) {
console.error('Canvas encoding failed');
return;
}
if (blob.type !== 'image/webp') {
console.error(`Requested WebP, received ${blob.type || 'unknown format'}`);
return;
}
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = url;
link.download = 'capture.webp';
link.click();
window.setTimeout(() => URL.revokeObjectURL(url), 1000);
}, 'image/webp', 0.85);
MDN documents that if the requested format is unsupported, toBlob() exports as PNG instead. Therefore, a non-null Blob only establishes that some image was produced; check blob.type to confirm WebP. Also note that MDN’s stated 96 dpi resolution for formats supporting resolution metadata concerns metadata, not the canvas pixel dimensions.

Choose the right rendering and encoding path
| Choice | Use it when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| DOM-to-image library, then canvas encoding | You need the rendered appearance of an HTML element, including its styling. | Fidelity depends on how the library, browser, CSS, fonts, and assets interact; cross-origin resources may block export. |
| Custom browser rendering implementation | You need control over how the DOM content is prepared or rendered. | You must handle the same rendering, asset-access, and canvas-encoding constraints yourself. |
| Lossy WebP | Photographs or other content where some detail loss is acceptable. | Quality is a trade-off; inspect text and edges, especially in screenshots and diagrams. |
| Lossless WebP | You need to preserve sharp edges and exact-looking graphics. | Do not assume it will always produce a smaller file than the source or another format. |
MDN describes lossy WebP images as typically 25–35% smaller than visually similar JPEGs, and lossless WebP as typically 26% smaller than PNG. These are typical comparisons, not a promise about your particular capture. Google’s WebP FAQ notes that converting between mismatched lossy and lossless modes or choosing a higher target quality can make the resulting file larger.
Browser and asset limitations
Test canvas encoding, not just WebP display
A browser’s ability to display a WebP image does not prove that its canvas encoder can produce WebP. Feature-test the exact toBlob() path and verify the returned type. If it is image/png, do not save the file with a .webp extension as if conversion succeeded. Can I Use’s compatibility table concerns the toDataURL() type parameter specifically; it should not be treated as definitive support data for every canvas encoder or library.
Cross-origin images can taint the canvas
When external images or other cross-origin content are involved, the canvas must remain origin-clean for export. If the browser cannot access those resources under applicable cross-origin rules, toBlob() can throw a SecurityError. Configure the asset server’s CORS behavior where possible, or omit inaccessible assets from the capture; a rendering library cannot bypass browser security restrictions.

Rendering fidelity is page-dependent
Check the exported result for missing images, substituted fonts, unsupported CSS, clipping, and layout differences. A DOM-to-image library’s use of SVG foreignObject makes browser implementation details relevant, and complex pages may not render exactly like the live page. Test the actual target browser and the specific element you plan to export.
Troubleshooting failed or unexpected exports
- The download is PNG, not WebP: inspect
blob.type. The requested encoder may be unsupported and the canvas may have fallen back to PNG. Feature-test the target browser’s canvas export rather than inferring support from its ability to display WebP. SecurityErroror a tainted canvas: look for external images or other cross-origin content. Make those resources available with suitable CORS access or exclude them before capture.- The output is blank or incomplete: confirm that the selected element exists and contains the expected content; check image loading, fonts, and styles before capturing. Try a simpler element to isolate a rendering limitation.
- Text or edges look rough: raise the lossy quality setting or use a lossless encoding route, then compare the result at its intended display size. Quality values are not a guarantee of a particular visual result.
- The file is larger than expected: WebP savings are not guaranteed for each image. Try an appropriate lossy or lossless mode and inspect the file size and visual quality rather than assuming conversion must reduce it.
- The download link stops working: do not revoke the object URL before the user can activate the link. Revoke it after it has served its purpose to avoid leaving temporary URLs around.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a browser convert an HTML file directly to WebP?
Not as raw markup: it must render the HTML into pixels first. The browser can then encode those pixels as WebP if its canvas export path supports that format.
Does requesting image/webp guarantee that the downloaded file is WebP?
No. Check the produced Blob’s type; an unsupported requested type may result in PNG instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will converting to WebP always make the file smaller?
No. Typical savings depend on the image and encoding settings, and some conversions can produce a larger file.
