Obtain the message HTML from your email system or application, without assuming that every client has the same export process. If you cannot get HTML directly, check the relevant email client’s current documentation for an HTML export or message-source option. PDFCrowd’s cited documentation does not specify Gmail, Outlook, or other client menus.

Before submitting, consider whether the message relies on separate assets. HTML can reference images, stylesheets, and other resources by local paths or internet URLs. If an asset is local, it must be provided along with the HTML; if it is hosted online, PDFCrowd can load it when the URL is accessible to the converter.
Convert once with the online converter
- Obtain the email’s HTML and any local resources it needs.
- Open PDFCrowd’s online HTML-to-PDF converter and provide the HTML using the input method offered there.
- Set page and layout options if the converter exposes them, then submit the conversion.
- Open the resulting PDF and check the email text, images, and page breaks before saving or sharing it.
The exact online form labels and available controls can change; use the current interface rather than relying on an assumed email-specific upload flow.

Automate conversion with the PDFCrowd HTTP API
The documented HTTP API endpoint is https://api.pdfcrowd.com/convert/24.04/. It uses POST, HTTP Basic authentication with a PDFCrowd username and API key, and form fields. A successful response is 200 OK with PDF bytes in the response body. The version shown here is 24.04; check the current API guide before deploying because endpoint details may change.
For example, with cURL, pass the HTML as a form value and write the returned PDF bytes to a file. Replace the credential placeholders with your own PDFCrowd credentials; do not publish real API keys in source code or logs.

-o email.pdfThe API accepts HTML input through its documented form fields. For HTML that depends on local images or stylesheets, use an input archive instead of assuming the API can see files on your computer.
Include local images and stylesheets
Package an HTML file and its local dependencies in a .zip, .tar.gz, or .tar.bz2 archive when those resources are not available at public URLs. PDFCrowd converts the first HTML file it finds in the archive by default. If the archive has more than one HTML file, select the intended one with zip_main_filename.

For remote assets, use URLs that the converter can reach. A resource that requires your browser session, a local file path, or authentication unavailable to the conversion request may not load. Inspect the output PDF to confirm that essential images and styles appear as intended.

Set page size, margins, and CSS precedence
The API reference lists A4 as the default page size and Letter as an available standard size. It also exposes orientation, margins, headers, footers, and custom styling. Set these options to match how the email will be read or printed rather than assuming the source email’s browser layout maps cleanly to paper.

If the email HTML contains CSS @page rules, choose how those rules interact with API page settings using css_page_rule_mode. In default mode, API settings take precedence; mode2 gives precedence to the CSS page rules. Consult the API reference for the exact accepted field values and current option syntax.
Check the PDF and troubleshoot common problems
After conversion, review the PDF rather than assuming every email layout will render identically. HTML email often depends on assets and styles that may behave differently outside the original mailbox.
- Images or styling are missing: check that each local asset is included in the archive and referenced with a path that works from the HTML file. For remote assets, confirm that their URLs are accessible to the converter.
- The wrong HTML file was converted: if an archive contains multiple HTML files, set
zip_main_filenameto the intended file. - Page dimensions or margins look wrong: set the desired page size, orientation, and margins explicitly. If the HTML has
@pagerules, verify whetherdefaultormode2should control them. - The request does not produce a PDF: confirm that the request uses POST to the documented endpoint, that Basic authentication contains the correct PDFCrowd username and API key, and that the submitted form field matches the chosen input method. Check the current API guide for request details.
PDF layout quality for a particular message depends on its HTML and resources; no universal rendering result is established. Review the converted pages for clipped content, awkward page breaks, and unreadable images before treating the PDF as a record copy.
