Select the element with a CSS selector, wait for it to appear, then call the screenshot method on its handle. Chrome’s --screenshot command-line flag captures a page; its documented options do not include selecting an element by DOM selector.
Capture an element with Puppeteer
This is the direct approach when your automation already uses Puppeteer. The documented pattern is to wait for a matching element, then call screenshot() on the returned handle. See the Puppeteer screenshots guide.

const element = await page.waitForSelector('#target');
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Element #target was not found');
}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
Here, #target is a CSS selector and element.png is the output file. Change the selector and filename to suit the page and output you need. The call saves the element screenshot to the path provided.
Make sure the selector identifies the right element
Use a selector that targets the intended node, such as a unique ID or a specific class-and-container combination. If the page has multiple matching nodes, choose a selector that narrows the result to the one you want. The returned handle represents the element found by waitForSelector().

Wait for the page state you need
Waiting for a selector confirms that the element is present, but it does not establish that every image, animation, or piece of asynchronous content inside it has finished rendering. Add a readiness condition appropriate to the site—for example, wait for a known loading indicator to disappear or for a specific value to appear—before taking the screenshot. There is no single readiness wait that fits every page.
Elements outside the viewport
Puppeteer’s guide says the element screenshot method tries to scroll the element into view when it is hidden. This is useful for off-screen targets, but it does not remove the need to confirm that the element is visible and in the expected state for your capture.

When to use a DevTools Protocol clip instead
The Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot method accepts a clip region. Use this when your automation already works with the protocol or when you need to capture a rectangle by coordinates. The protocol does not select a DOM element for you: your code must obtain the target’s position and dimensions and supply the clip. See the Page protocol reference for the method and its fields.

Why Chrome’s --screenshot flag is not enough
Chrome’s documented headless --screenshot option takes a screenshot of a page, and the documentation shows setting capture dimensions with --window-size. It does not document a DOM selector argument for targeting one node. For an element, use Puppeteer’s element handle or calculate a rectangle and capture it with the protocol. See the Chrome headless shell documentation.
Screenshot options and geometry
Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference documents clip and captureBeyondViewport. The documented default for captureBeyondViewport is false when there is no clip and true when a clip is specified. These options concern screenshot geometry; they do not replace selecting the correct element or waiting for its content to be ready. Verify behavior with the Puppeteer version and page geometry in your own setup.

Troubleshooting
- The selector wait times out: Confirm that the page loaded the expected content and that the selector matches the live DOM. If the element is added asynchronously, wait for the relevant state rather than assuming it exists immediately.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Check whether the element’s content is still loading or updating. Wait for a page-specific readiness condition before capturing.
- The wrong element is captured: Refine the selector so it identifies the intended node, particularly when the same class appears more than once.
- An element screenshot unexpectedly scrolls the page: Puppeteer may scroll a hidden element into view. If the scroll position matters to your workflow, account for that behavior or use a coordinate clip after measuring the desired region.
- A protocol clip is offset or the wrong size: Recheck the rectangle’s coordinates and dimensions and confirm your assumptions against the protocol and Chrome versions in use. A clip is a region, not a DOM-node selector.
- The command-line screenshot includes the full page: The documented Chrome flag does not provide a selector argument. Switch to Puppeteer’s element screenshot method or calculate a clip rectangle through the DevTools Protocol.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can capture one element by CSS selector without setting up a browser automation flow locally. For example, a basic one-call capture looks like this; add the element selector parameter as documented in the ScreenshotNeo API docs when you need a specific element:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
