Convert the mass flow to kilograms per second, determine the steam’s inlet and exhaust enthalpy, apply the turbine and generator efficiencies, and then subtract plant parasitic loads if you need net export. For metric tons, the conversion is ṁ (kg/s) = tons/day × 0.011574. Thus, 1,000 metric tons per day equals 11.574 kg/s. With a 500 kJ/kg enthalpy drop, 80% turbine efficiency and 95% generator efficiency, the illustrative gross output is 4.41 MW. Actual output can be materially higher or lower because pressure, temperature, moisture, turbine design and auxiliary consumption change the result.
The calculation in one line
For a preliminary estimate, use:
Pgross (MW) = ṁ (kg/s) × Δh (kJ/kg) × ηturbine × ηgenerator ÷ 1,000

Here, Δh is the usable specific-enthalpy drop across the turbine. The divisor is 1,000 because kilograms per second multiplied by kilojoules per kilogram produces kilowatts. If enthalpy is expressed in joules per kilogram instead, use ÷ 1,000,000.

For net plant output:
Pnet = Pgross − Pparasitic
Parasitic demand includes production and injection pumps, cooling equipment, fans, controls, lubrication systems and other loads that consume generated electricity. A nameplate or gross estimate is not the same as electricity available for export.

Step 1: Convert tons per day to mass flow
Metric tons
A metric ton is 1,000 kg and a day contains 86,400 seconds:
ṁ = tons/day × 1,000 kg/ton ÷ 86,400 s/day
Therefore:
ṁ (kg/s) = tons/day × 0.011574
| Geothermal steam flow | Mass flow |
|---|---|
| 100 metric tons/day | 1.1574 kg/s |
| 500 metric tons/day | 5.787 kg/s |
| 1,000 metric tons/day | 11.574 kg/s |
| 5,000 metric tons/day | 57.87 kg/s |
Keep the 0.011574 factor attached to the metric-ton assumption. A US short ton is 907.1847 kg, while a long ton is 1,016.047 kg. If a field report says only “tons,” confirm which definition its flow meter, production test or contract uses before calculating power.
Mass flow must be the steam flow used by the turbine
Wellhead production may contain liquid water, non-condensable gases and steam. A separator can remove brine before the turbine, and some steam may be lost through vents, drains or auxiliary equipment. Use the mass flow entering the turbine, not automatically the total two-phase well flow. If the reported value is a wet mixture, determine the steam fraction and calculate the turbine steam flow separately.

Step 2: Determine the inlet enthalpy
Enthalpy, h, represents the specific energy available in the fluid state. You cannot obtain a defensible megawatt estimate from flow alone. At minimum, establish the inlet pressure and temperature, or pressure and steam quality.
Dry or superheated steam
For a single-phase steam stream, record absolute pressure and temperature at the turbine inlet. A thermodynamic property formulation such as the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS-95, released in 2018) can calculate enthalpy from those state variables. Use the same pressure reference and property convention throughout the calculation.
Saturated steam
If the inlet is saturated, pressure determines the saturation temperature and saturated-vapor enthalpy. A temperature measurement by itself is not enough if the steam is near saturation, because a small amount of liquid carryover can change the mixture enthalpy and turbine moisture level.

Wet steam and quality
Steam quality, usually written x, is the mass fraction that is vapor in a saturated liquid-vapor mixture. For a saturated mixture:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →h = hf + x(hg − hf)
hf is saturated-liquid enthalpy and hg is saturated-vapor enthalpy at the stated pressure. A quality of 0.90 means 90% of the mixture mass is vapor, not that the plant receives 90% of the energy of dry steam at every possible pressure. Separator performance, droplet carryover and dissolved solids also affect the usable stream.
What to record at the inlet
- Absolute pressure, with the measurement location identified.
- Temperature, if the stream is superheated or its state needs confirmation.
- Steam quality or moisture content for a wet stream.
- Whether the flow value is total well flow, separator outlet flow or turbine-inlet flow.
- Non-condensable-gas content when it affects condenser pressure or turbine performance.
Step 3: Determine the exhaust state and enthalpy drop
The available energy is the difference between inlet and outlet enthalpy:
Δh = hin − hout
Measure or calculate the outlet state at the turbine exhaust or condenser inlet. Exhaust pressure is especially important in condensing plants: a lower condenser pressure generally permits a larger expansion, but cooling conditions, air leakage and moisture limits constrain the achievable value.
Estimated outlet enthalpy
For a design estimate, calculate an isentropic expansion from the inlet state to the exhaust pressure, obtain the isentropic outlet enthalpy, and apply the turbine isentropic efficiency:
ηt = (hin − hout,actual) ÷ (hin − hout,is)
Rearranging gives:
hout,actual = hin − ηt(hin − hout,is)
Then use the actual drop in the power equation. If you already have a measured actual outlet enthalpy, do not multiply that measured drop by turbine efficiency again; doing so would double-count turbine losses. Alternatively, when only the ideal expansion drop is known, multiplying it by an assumed turbine efficiency is a reasonable preliminary approximation.

Why pressure alone still does not produce MW
Two wells at the same inlet pressure can deliver different power if their temperatures, steam qualities, gas content or flow rates differ. Likewise, the same 1,000 metric tons per day can produce different results at different condenser pressures. Pressure is an input to the property calculation, not a substitute for enthalpy.
Step 4: Apply equipment efficiencies
Separate the losses so that each is applied once:
- Turbine efficiency: converts the ideal expansion work into actual shaft work. Use it only when the enthalpy drop has not already been measured as an actual drop.
- Mechanical efficiency: accounts for shaft, bearing and coupling losses when those losses are not included in the turbine rating.
- Generator efficiency: converts shaft power into electrical power.
- Transformer and electrical-distribution losses: may be included when the target is power at the plant bus or grid interconnection rather than generator terminals.
- Parasitic load: is subtracted after gross electrical generation to obtain net output.
If a turbine-generator package provides a combined shaft-to-electric efficiency, do not multiply separate mechanical and generator factors on top of that combined value.
Worked example: 1,000 metric tons per day
Assume the measured turbine-inlet flow is 1,000 metric tons per day. Assume an available enthalpy drop of 500 kJ/kg, turbine efficiency of 0.80 and generator efficiency of 0.95.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Convert the flow:
1,000 × 0.011574 = 11.574 kg/s. - Calculate shaft-equivalent thermal power:
11.574 × 500 = 5,787 kW. - Apply the stated efficiencies:
5,787 × 0.80 × 0.95 = 4,398 kW. - Express the result in megawatts:
4,398 kW ÷ 1,000 ≈ 4.40 MW, conventionally rounded to 4.41 MW using the unrounded flow factor.
This is illustrative gross output, not a universal value for 1,000 tons per day. If the plant consumes 0.50 MW in pumps, cooling and controls, the corresponding net export under that assumption would be about 3.91 MW. The parasitic figure in that sentence is an example assumption; measure or model the actual plant load for a project result.
Illustrative sensitivity to enthalpy drop
Holding 1,000 metric tons per day and the 0.80 turbine and 0.95 generator efficiencies constant:
| Enthalpy drop | Calculated gross output | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 300 kJ/kg | About 2.64 MW | Lower usable expansion energy |
| 500 kJ/kg | About 4.40 MW | The worked example |
| 700 kJ/kg | About 6.16 MW | Higher usable expansion energy |
The table demonstrates why quoting one MW-per-ton figure without state conditions is misleading. The rows are arithmetic illustrations, not field performance claims.

Gross MW versus net MW
State the boundary of every result. “Gross MW” normally refers to electrical generation before the plant’s own consumption. “Net MW” refers to electricity remaining after auxiliary loads, and some reports define the boundary at the generator terminals while others use the plant bus or grid connection.
Typical parasitic categories
- Brine, condensate and injection pumps.
- Cooling-tower fans, pumps and circulating-water systems.
- Air-removal equipment and non-condensable-gas handling.
- Steam or hot-water controls, valves and instrumentation.
- Lubrication, seal systems, lighting and building services.
- Transformers, switchgear and electrical distribution.
Document whether each load is included, excluded or estimated. NREL capacity documentation distinguishes gross capacity from net output after parasitic load; use the same distinction when comparing a calculation with a plant specification.
How plant configuration changes the calculation
Dry-steam plants
Dry-steam plants send naturally occurring steam to the turbine, subject to moisture separation and conditioning. The turbine inlet state and exhaust pressure drive the enthalpy calculation directly. Flow-meter location matters because wellhead flow can differ from conditioned turbine-inlet flow.
Flash-steam plants
Flash plants reduce the pressure of hot geothermal fluid so part of the liquid flashes into steam. A separator sends the vapor to a turbine and routes the separated brine elsewhere. Calculate the steam mass flow after flashing and separation, not simply the original liquid-plus-vapor well flow. Single- or double-flash arrangements have different pressures, qualities and steam yields.
Binary plants
Binary plants transfer geothermal heat to a secondary working fluid through a heat exchanger rather than expanding geothermal steam directly through a steam turbine. A geothermal steam-flow-to-steam-turbine equation is not automatically valid for a binary unit. Use the heat-transfer duty, secondary-fluid cycle efficiency and auxiliary loads, or a model intended for binary geothermal systems. DOE descriptions of dry-steam, flash-steam and binary configurations emphasize that the appropriate conversion depends on the subsurface-fluid state and temperature.
A repeatable calculation workflow
- Define the reporting basis. Write “metric tons per day,” “gross generator-terminal MW” or another precise boundary in the worksheet heading.
- Verify the flow. Identify meter location, averaging period, calibration status and whether the stream is dry steam, wet steam or total two-phase production.
- Convert units. Multiply metric tons per day by 0.011574 to obtain kilograms per second.
- Establish the inlet state. Record absolute pressure and temperature, or pressure and quality, at the turbine inlet.
- Establish the outlet state. Record exhaust or condenser pressure and determine outlet enthalpy, including moisture limits where relevant.
- Choose the efficiency method. Use measured actual enthalpy drop, or calculate an ideal expansion and apply a documented turbine efficiency. Do not apply both methods together.
- Calculate gross electrical power. Keep enthalpy units in kJ/kg with a 1,000 divisor, or use J/kg with a 1,000,000 divisor.
- Subtract parasitics. Add measured or modeled pump, cooling, fan, control and electrical-distribution loads.
- Report assumptions and uncertainty. Include pressure, temperature or quality, enthalpies, efficiencies, flow basis, date and gross/net boundary.
Measurement and data-quality checks
Flow measurement
A flow meter should be selected and installed for geothermal temperature, pressure, chemistry, solids and two-phase behavior. Check straight-run requirements, density compensation and the meter’s stated uncertainty. A mass-flow reading is preferable to treating a volumetric reading as mass flow without a contemporaneous density calculation.

Pressure and temperature locations
Use measurements at the thermodynamic state being modeled. A wellhead pressure may not equal separator pressure, and separator pressure may not equal turbine-inlet pressure after piping losses. Label every sensor location and timestamp.
Property calculation consistency
Use one recognized water-and-steam property formulation, such as IAPWS-95, for all state points. Mixing values from unrelated steam tables can create small but consequential inconsistencies, especially near saturation.
Moisture and erosion
Liquid carryover lowers vapor enthalpy and can damage turbine blading. A calculation that assumes dry steam while the turbine receives wet steam will overstate usable work. Include separator performance, demister condition and any specified maximum exhaust moisture in the engineering review.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using a universal constant. Correction: calculate the enthalpy drop and efficiencies for the stated pressures and steam condition.
- Confusing metric and short tons. Correction: identify the ton definition in the meter or production report and convert to kilograms explicitly.
- Dividing by the wrong factor. Correction: use 1,000 when enthalpy is in kJ/kg; use 1,000,000 when it is in J/kg.
- Multiplying by turbine efficiency twice. Correction: if inlet and actual outlet enthalpies are measured, use their actual difference and apply only losses not already represented.
- Calling gross generation net export. Correction: subtract documented parasitic and electrical-distribution loads.
- Using total well flow as turbine steam flow. Correction: account for flashing, separator removal, drains and venting.
- Ignoring condenser pressure. Correction: model the actual exhaust pressure and cooling conditions.
- Reporting excessive precision. Correction: round the final MW to match the uncertainty of flow, state measurements and efficiency assumptions.
Reverse calculation: required flow for a target MW
You can rearrange the same relationship when sizing a flow requirement:
ṁ (kg/s) = Pgross (MW) × 1,000 ÷ (Δh × ηturbine × ηgenerator)
Then convert kilograms per second to metric tons per day:
tons/day = ṁ (kg/s) ÷ 0.011574
For example, using the illustrative 500 kJ/kg drop and 0.80 × 0.95 efficiencies, a 10 MW gross target would require approximately 113.68 kg/s, or about 9,820 metric tons per day. This is a mathematical sizing example only; a real project must verify resource sustainability, separator capacity, turbine operating limits, cooling conditions and net auxiliary demand.

What to include in a defensible result
A useful conversion is reproducible by another engineer. Put these items beside the reported MW:
- Ton definition and flow basis, including meter location and averaging period.
- Converted mass flow in kg/s.
- Inlet pressure, temperature or quality, and inlet enthalpy.
- Exhaust or condenser pressure, outlet enthalpy and whether the outlet is actual or isentropic.
- Turbine, mechanical and generator efficiencies, with their source and operating point.
- Separator, moisture and non-condensable-gas assumptions.
- Gross or net electrical boundary.
- Parasitic-load values and the loads they include.
- Rounding and uncertainty statement.
With those data, “tons per day to megawatts” becomes a transparent thermodynamic calculation rather than a misleading rule of thumb. For 1,000 metric tons per day, 4.41 MW is valid only for the explicitly stated illustrative enthalpy and efficiency assumptions; the plant’s measured pressure, steam quality, enthalpy drop and auxiliary loads determine its actual output.
