First inspect the story videos, choose a target format for the intended player, and normalize only the streams that differ. Then join the prepared clips: use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when their streams and time bases match and you want to avoid re-encoding, or the concat filter when joining requires re-encoding. “Looping” can mean repeating input during processing or replaying the finished file, so the right repeat method depends on your playback setup.
1. Inspect the videos and decide what “looping” means
There is no universal conversion profile for children’s story videos. The right resolution, frame rate, codecs, audio layout, and container depend on the source files and where you will play the result. FFmpeg’s documentation provides tools for inspecting files and working with streams; see the FFmpeg documentation index and FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Before converting, clarify the repeat behavior you need. You may want FFmpeg to repeat an input while it processes, a completed joined file that a player repeats, or behavior specific to a particular output format. These are different requirements; there is no single loop flag that applies to all of them. A public FFmpeg discussion illustrates the separate “conversion before concat” problem, but does not establish one universal looping method: Help with conversion before concat.

For every clip, record its video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and duration. Compare those properties across the set, and note the target player or platform’s requirements. This inventory tells you whether the files can be joined directly or need conversion first.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Choose a target profile and normalize only the differences
Choose a target profile from the needs of your playback destination, rather than assuming that every story must be converted to the same preset. If dimensions differ, decide whether the finished video should preserve the full picture with padding or fill the frame by cropping. If frame rates, codecs, audio streams, or other required parameters differ, convert the relevant streams so the resulting files are compatible.
FFmpeg documents filters for tasks such as scaling and pixel-format conversion, but the appropriate values depend on the source and destination. For example, a scale-and-pad approach can preserve the entire image inside a chosen frame; cropping instead fills that frame at the cost of trimming image edges. Treat any specific dimensions or frame rate as a target-specific choice, not a requirement imposed by FFmpeg’s concat tools.

Changing a filename extension does not convert a codec or make stream parameters match. A container change alone cannot satisfy compatibility requirements that the underlying streams do not meet.

| Route | Use it when | Trade-off and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | The prepared files have the same streams, codecs, and time base, and you want to avoid re-encoding. | It reads files in sequence and adjusts timestamps. Check duration accuracy: incorrect duration information can cause artifacts. |
| Concat filter | You need to re-encode as part of joining, such as when the clips have differing dimensions or stream layouts. | Follow the filter workflow in FFmpeg’s FAQ and set conversion details for the target playback context. |
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Read the concat demuxer documentation before using this route. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating video files recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; the demuxer is the alternative when file-level concatenation is appropriate and the inputs are compatible.

4. Convert, join, and verify in order
- Inspect every source. Use FFmpeg’s inspection options to identify each file’s video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and duration. Keep the results together so mismatches are easy to spot.
- Set the destination profile. Use the actual playback device or platform requirements to select dimensions, frame rate, video and audio formats, and container. Decide whether to pad or crop when aspect ratios differ.
- Convert incompatible clips. Re-encode the relevant streams to the chosen profile where needed. Do not assume that a container rename or extension change makes files compatible.
- Choose the join route. If all prepared files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases, use the concat demuxer with a file list. If joining requires re-encoding, use the concat filter.
- Check durations and playback. Review duration information, then play the joined file through the intended player. Look for timestamp or transition artifacts, missing audio, unexpected gaps, and aspect-ratio problems.
- Apply the repeat behavior you actually need. Configure repeat in the player if the player is meant to replay the finished file. If FFmpeg must repeat input during processing, configure that separately for the processing command and verify the resulting output. The appropriate mechanism depends on the output format and playback context.
5. Troubleshoot common failures
- The demuxer rejects the list or the output is wrong: compare each file’s streams, codecs, and time base. Convert mismatched files, or use the concat filter if re-encoding is required.
- Artifacts appear at a join: check duration metadata and timestamps. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate durations can lead to artifacts when using the concat demuxer.
- Picture size or framing changes between stories: normalize dimensions and aspect ratio for the destination, choosing padding to retain the full image or cropping to fill the frame.
- The output does not repeat: determine whether repeat is expected from FFmpeg during processing, from the output format, or from the player. Confirm the behavior in the actual playback context rather than assuming that joining clips also makes them repeat.
- Audio disappears or changes at a join: compare the audio streams and make them compatible as part of conversion; verify the complete joined file in the intended player.
6. Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded story videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from preparing a joined file with FFmpeg: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live video. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
