Microsoft’s Disc-to-Digital feature lets you claim a digital entitlement for some Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. On a supported disc-drive console, sign in to the account you want to use, insert an eligible disc and launch the game. The entitlement is not a replacement for owning the disc: Microsoft’s rules condition it on continued possession of the qualifying disc.
How to claim the digital entitlement
- Use a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Sign in to the account on which you want the entitlement. Microsoft’s announcement specifies a supported Xbox console and a supported disc; it does not describe a separate offline or account-switching procedure. See Xbox’s announcement.
- Insert the game disc and launch the game. If the disc and title are eligible, the console can provide the digital entitlement. This is Microsoft’s announced claim action; the exact prompts may depend on the console and game.
- Check the individual disc on your console. Eligibility is title-specific and may change. Microsoft says the feature began with thousands of titles and that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs support it, but not all do. Technical, licensing, publishing and other factors can affect eligibility, and Microsoft may add or remove discs. The official information cited here does not provide a complete live list.
- Keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules say the digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the disc. Microsoft may require revalidation, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The entitlement cannot be transferred separately from the qualifying disc.
Does it work with Xbox Series S?
No Series S can perform the disc claim itself: it has no disc drive and plays digital games only. Use a supported disc-drive Xbox One or Series X to attempt the claim. The available official information does not establish whether an entitlement claimed on another console can then be used on a Series S, so do not assume that it will.

Microsoft also notes that Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere benefits apply only when supported; claiming a disc entitlement does not guarantee either feature for every game or region.

Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement said Xbox Insiders could begin testing the feature on August 31 and that it was starting with thousands of titles. A September 30, 2026 report by Windows Central said it became available to all players on Xbox Series X|S on September 29. Microsoft’s retrieved announcement is framed as an Insider test, while its current rules warn that eligibility and availability may vary. The official sources do not establish a universal regional rollout. Check on your console to see whether your particular disc is supported.

What happens if you sell or lose the disc?
The digital entitlement is not a disc-free conversion. Microsoft conditions the license on continued possession of the qualifying disc and says it may revalidate eligibility. If you sell or otherwise stop possessing that disc, access may be suspended or revoked; you cannot transfer the entitlement on its own. If you need a license that does not depend on keeping the physical disc, check whether you already own the digital version or whether it is available to purchase for your account.

Some older forum posts refer to Xbox policies announced in 2013 concerning online checks or resale. Xbox’s June 2013 licensing post was later updated and explicitly warned that some of its information had become inaccurate. It is historical context, not instructions for the current Disc-to-Digital feature: Xbox’s 2013 licensing post.
