You can control a compatible Samsung TV with the SmartThings app, use the TV’s built-in controller for basic tasks, or get a replacement remote that supports your exact model. For SmartThings setup, Samsung says the TV and phone need the same Wi-Fi network and Samsung account, and the TV must be on to connect. The button on the TV can help if the app is not set up, but it may not provide every setting or function.

Use your phone as a Samsung TV remote
Samsung’s SmartThings app can control power, channels, volume, and other functions on compatible Samsung TVs and smart monitors. The exact interface and controls depend on the TV and app version. Samsung’s US setup instructions specify a shared Wi-Fi network and the same Samsung account on the phone and TV; the TV must be on when you connect it.

- If possible, turn the TV on using its built-in controller.
- Install or open SmartThings on your phone and sign in to your Samsung account.
- Connect the phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- In SmartThings, add or register the Samsung TV, select the discovered TV, and complete any on-screen confirmation or PIN step.
- Open the TV’s card in the app and choose the mobile remote.
Samsung’s India walkthrough shows a registration flow that may include selecting the TV and confirming a prompt or PIN. Treat its screens as an example, not a universal sequence: steps can vary by model year and region. If the TV asks you to approve a prompt on screen and you cannot do that without a remote, try the built-in controller if it supports the needed selection. Otherwise, consult the instructions for your TV model or use a compatible replacement remote. Samsung’s Canada setup guidance also describes confirmation interactions that differ across model years.

Samsung TVs commonly place their physical controller on the lower frame, back, or side, but there is no single location or layout for every model. Look near the indicator light and check the lower edge or side first. If the TV is wall-mounted, do not tilt or move it unsafely to search behind it.

Some models have a multi-button panel; others use a single button or joystick-style control. On some single-button designs, short presses cycle through functions and a long press selects an option, but behavior varies. Use the manual or model-specific Samsung support page to identify your TV’s control and how to operate it. If you cannot find the model number without moving the set, check its original paperwork or product information.
The built-in control is a temporary option, not a guaranteed substitute for the remote. Samsung Australia warns: “The TV Control button on your television has limited functionality and certain features and/or settings cannot be accessed without the use of a remote control.”

Get a compatible replacement or universal remote
A replacement remote is the more practical choice if you need full, familiar navigation or SmartThings cannot be set up. Samsung recognizes third-party and universal remotes, but programming varies by remote maker.

- Find the TV’s exact model number and check it against the remote’s supported-device list or compatibility lookup.
- Use the remote manufacturer’s pairing or programming instructions; setup methods are not universal.
- Do not assume that every Samsung remote or every universal remote will work with your TV.
Samsung’s guidance establishes that third-party remotes can be used, not that a particular product is compatible with every Samsung TV. Buy only when the listing names your model or provides a clear compatibility check. Samsung’s separate universal remote guide also covers control of some HDMI-connected devices and Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC), but that does not establish compatibility for a particular third-party remote.

If none of the options works
- If SmartThings cannot discover the TV, verify that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the TV is powered on. Check Samsung’s instructions for your region and model.
- If setup requires an on-screen approval you cannot make, use the TV controller if it supports the prompt; otherwise, consult the model-specific manual or use a compatible remote.
- If the physical control is hard to locate or its behavior is unclear, find the model number and consult the manual rather than guessing at button sequences.
- If considering a replacement, verify the exact TV model with the remote maker before buying.
Samsung’s support instructions are regional, and menus, pairing steps, and available controls can vary by model year and app version. For exact steps, use the support or manual page for your TV model and sales region.
