Convert a website URL to PDF with CloudConvert
This is an API workflow: you submit a job to CloudConvert rather than using a browser’s Print dialog. The documented operation can capture a website as a PDF or screenshot. Its required inputs include the page URL and output format; it also documents engine, engine-version, and filename options.

- Choose the full URL. Include the page’s scheme, such as
https://, and any path or query parameters needed to reach the intended page. - Create a job with a
capture-websitetask. Set the task’surlto the page andoutput_formattopdf. Consult the current operation documentation for the request structure and optional fields. - Add an export task. Connect an
export/urltask to the capture task so the job produces a downloadable URL for the result. - Download and inspect the PDF. Check that the expected content appears and review page breaks, font rendering, and any content that loads dynamically.
CloudConvert documents the job pattern, but the steps above are not an independent test. The export URL and associated tasks are automatically deleted after 24 hours, so retrieve the PDF promptly; that deadline applies to the export URL and tasks, not necessarily every submitted item or log. Direct API job for an individual capture
The capture-website job is the direct route when your application or script needs to turn a URL into a PDF. CloudConvert’s broader HTML to PDF API describes URL and HTML-file inputs, custom authorization headers for protected resources, and waiting for a CSS selector to appear. It also describes page size, margins, zoom, headers and footers, synchronous or asynchronous processing, webhooks, and storage integrations. Check the current API reference for exact parameter names and constraints before implementing those options.

Signed URLs for a website feature
If you are adding a “Download as PDF” button to your own website, CloudConvert documents signed URLs as an on-demand integration that can pass conversion settings in query parameters. You create the signed-URL base in the dashboard; the generated URL uses an encrypted signature. This is an integration option, not a shortcut for a one-off personal conversion. Check rendering, access, and processing region
- Dynamic pages: CloudConvert says its HTML-to-PDF API is powered by headless Chrome and supports complex JavaScript and custom fonts. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every site will render exactly as it does in a browser. Inspect the finished file, especially for long pages, late-loading content, custom fonts, and awkward page breaks.
- Protected pages: The HTML-to-PDF API page describes custom authorization headers and waiting for a CSS selector. Confirm the relevant options in current API documentation and ensure you are authorized to submit the page.
- Regional requirements: CloudConvert’s API introduction says the default endpoint selects the nearest processing region based on the caller’s IP unless account settings override it. It lists
eu-centralin Germany andus-eastin Virginia, USA. Check account settings and current endpoint documentation if a particular region is required: API Documentation: Introduction. - Timeouts: The capture operation documents a default task timeout of five hours. This is a maximum timeout setting, not an estimate of how long an ordinary conversion takes.
Privacy and cost considerations
CloudConvert’s Privacy Policy says selected files are transferred to and temporarily stored on its servers. The same policy says website and API access logs include the visitor’s IP address, HTTP referrer, user agent, and access dates, and identifies Lunaweb GmbH as data controller. Review the current Privacy Policy and your organization’s data-handling requirements before sending sensitive content. The policy was updated April 17, 2026.

- The job does not capture the intended page: Check that the submitted URL is complete and points to the page you want, including its path and required query parameters.
- The page is behind authentication: A URL alone may not provide access. The HTML-to-PDF API describes custom authorization headers for protected resources; use the current documented mechanism only when you are authorized to access the page.
- Content is missing because it loads later: For pages that render asynchronously, check the API’s documented wait-for-selector behavior and configure it for a selector that appears when the required content is ready.
- Fonts, layout, or page breaks look wrong: Inspect the PDF rather than assuming the output exactly matches the live page. Try the documented formatting controls, such as page size, margins, zoom, and headers or footers, where they fit your use case.
- The download link no longer works: Export URLs and associated tasks are automatically deleted after 24 hours. Run or export the job again if the link has expired.
- A job takes longer than expected: The documented five-hour default is a timeout ceiling, not a normal processing-time promise. Check the job’s status and your task configuration rather than treating that number as an expected wait.
