Choose based on your real pages, workflow, file sizes, and contractual requirements—not headline claims. Html2Pdf.app and PDFShift are hosted APIs for converting HTML or web pages into PDFs. Html2Pdf.app documents a wider set of page-generation controls and a callback workflow; PDFShift advertises asynchronous conversion, webhooks, parallel conversions, and PDF features such as encryption and watermarking. Neither description establishes which will render your pages more accurately, so test representative inputs before committing.

How the services differ

Decision point Html2Pdf.app PDFShift
Inputs and rendering Accepts a public webpage URL or raw HTML. Its documentation identifies Chromium rendering. Html2Pdf.app documentation Accepts raw HTML or URLs and highlights CSS and JavaScript support. PDFShift homepage
Page controls and PDF options Documents page format, margins, orientation, media mode, scale, headers and footers, and password protection. Html2Pdf.app documentation Advertises CSS/JavaScript injection, headers and footers, encryption, and watermarking. PDFShift pricing
Background processing Supports synchronous PDF-byte responses and an optional callback workflow. Html2Pdf.app documentation Advertises webhooks, asynchronous responses, and parallel conversions. PDFShift pricing
Free-plan allowance 100 credits per month; maximum file size 1 MB. One credit per 5 MB chunk of generated PDF data. Html2Pdf.app pricing 50 credits per month; maximum file size 15 MB; 30-second timeout. One credit per 5 MB chunk of generated data. PDFShift pricing

The listed features are vendor-documented or advertised capabilities, not a verified feature-by-feature parity test. A higher credit allowance does not automatically mean lower cost: compare the size of your resulting PDFs, the plan limits, and the paid plan you actually need.

Which one fits your workload?

Consider Html2Pdf.app when its documented controls match your output

Html2Pdf.app may suit an integration that needs its documented page-format, margin, orientation, media-mode, scale, header/footer, or password options. Its synchronous endpoint returns PDF bytes on success, which is convenient when the caller can wait for the document. For longer-running jobs, its callback option provides a separate workflow.

Consider PDFShift when its advertised workflow or features fit

PDFShift may be worth evaluating if you need the asynchronous, webhook, or parallel-conversion capabilities it advertises, or want to investigate its stated encryption and watermark options. Confirm the exact behavior and availability you require in current documentation and your account before designing around them.

Let your document and service constraints decide

  • Render pages with the CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images, and layout complexity found in production. A provider’s general support statement does not guarantee identical output for every page.
  • Estimate monthly credits from generated PDF sizes, not HTML input size alone. Both providers describe charging one credit per 5 MB chunk of generated data; check how the live service rounds usage.
  • Check the maximum PDF size and timeout against your largest expected output. The stated free-plan limits differ.
  • Confirm whether your application needs an immediate binary response or can accept a callback or webhook and process the result later.
  • For sensitive documents, assess current privacy terms and, where needed, a data processing agreement or business associate agreement with your organization. Do not treat marketing statements as an independent security or compliance audit.

Pricing and free-tier limits

The figures below are the providers’ listed plan details available on their pricing pages as of the pages reviewed on October 3, 2026. Pricing and limits can change; verify the current pages before purchase.

Provider and tier Listed allowance and limits Listed price
Html2Pdf.app Free 100 credits/month; 1 MB maximum file size Free
Html2Pdf.app Startup 1,000 credits/month $9/month
Html2Pdf.app Standard 5,000 credits/month $25/month
Html2Pdf.app Scale 10,000 credits/month $39/month
PDFShift Free 50 credits/month; 15 MB maximum file size; 30-second timeout Free
PDFShift paid tiers Not stated in the reviewed pricing details Not stated in the reviewed pricing details

Both pricing pages describe one credit per 5 MB chunk of generated PDF data. The Html2Pdf.app page lists paid monthly tiers; the reviewed PDFShift pricing details establish free-plan limits but not a complete paid price ladder. Compare the live prices and terms directly rather than inferring that the free tiers represent paid-plan value.

Test rendering before you migrate or launch

HTML-to-PDF results depend on the input and rendering conditions. Html2Pdf.app’s documentation notes that inputs and timing can affect output, which is a reason to validate your own pages—not evidence that one service is better than the other. Use the same representative documents with each provider, then compare:

  • Page breaks, paper dimensions, margins, orientation, and scaling.
  • Fonts, images, CSS layout, and content that appears only after JavaScript runs.
  • Headers, footers, links, and any required PDF protection or watermark.
  • Output size, conversion latency under your own conditions, and behavior when a request fails or takes longer than expected.
  • Whether the result is delivered in the form your application expects, including how background jobs report completion.

Do not extrapolate a general winner from one page or a provider’s homepage statistics. Html2Pdf.app and PDFShift publish performance and usage figures on their own sites, but those claims do not establish a controlled comparison for your documents.

Privacy and compliance checks

Html2Pdf.app says generated PDFs are temporarily processed rather than permanently stored; its documentation also says request metadata and a submitted source URL may remain in logs. PDFShift says it does not store documents unless requested and advertises HIPAA compliance. These are provider statements, not independent validation. Review current privacy terms and contractual documents, and have your security or compliance team assess whether the service and data flow are appropriate for your use case. API starting points

Html2Pdf.app: synchronous PDF response

The documented endpoint is POST https://api.html2pdf.app/v1/generate, authenticated with the X-API-Key header. A successful synchronous request returns PDF bytes. Consult the API documentation for the required request fields and options for URL or HTML input; do not assume a request body copied from another service will work unchanged. Html2Pdf.app API documentation

Html2Pdf.app: callback workflow

For background generation, the documentation describes a callback URL flow: an accepted job returns HTTP 202, and the generated PDF is sent to the callback endpoint as base64 in a JSON document field. Html2Pdf.app advises using an HTTPS callback and idempotent processing, and describes up to three retries after failed delivery. Make the receiver safe to process a repeated delivery, validate the payload, and avoid treating job acceptance as proof that the document has arrived. Html2Pdf.app API documentation

PDFShift: confirm the current request contract

PDFShift’s official site describes URL and raw-HTML conversion, but the material compared here does not establish a complete request example or authentication contract. Use its current API documentation for exact endpoint, authentication, request parameters, response handling, and webhook behavior before implementing.

Common implementation pitfalls

  • Unexpected layout: test the exact production HTML and assets, including pages that rely on JavaScript or delayed resources. Adjust the provider’s documented rendering controls where available and compare the resulting PDFs.
  • Oversized output: check generated PDF size against the selected plan’s file limit and estimate credits using the 5 MB-chunk rule listed by each provider. Reduce unnecessary high-resolution assets or split very long documents if your workflow permits.
  • Timeouts or slow jobs: a synchronous request ties up the caller while it waits. Where supported and appropriate, use the documented callback or asynchronous workflow; for PDFShift, verify the actual timeout and async terms for the plan you select.
  • Callback processed twice or lost: implement idempotent callback handling and log job identifiers and processing outcomes. Html2Pdf.app specifically advises idempotent processing and says callback delivery may be retried.
  • Unexpected spend: monitor actual PDF output sizes and credit consumption with representative production workloads, then revisit the selected tier if volume or document size changes.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for screenshots, not PDF conversion

If the actual requirement is a clean website screenshot rather than a PDF document, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not an HTML-to-PDF substitute.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot, one GET request returns an image or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
