To convert a live webpage to PDF in Rust, use Chromium as the renderer: launch or connect to a headless browser, navigate to the URL, wait for the page to be ready, set print options, and generate the PDF. The most direct Rust routes are Playwright’s Rust API or chromiumoxide; for a basic batch job, Rust can instead invoke Chrome Headless with --print-to-pdf.
Choose a conversion route
| Route | Best fit | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright for Rust | Applications that need navigation, readiness waits, and configurable print output | A Rust-facing page PDF API. PDF generation is documented for Chromium headless mode only. Playwright Rust Page API |
| chromiumoxide | Applications built around Chromium DevTools Protocol | Rust access to Chromium’s PrintToPdfParams. chromiumoxide PrintToPdfParams |
| Chrome Headless subprocess | Simple jobs where process orchestration in Rust is sufficient | Print a URL using Chrome’s command-line flags, with browser installation and subprocess errors handled by your app. Chrome Headless documentation |
| html2pdf | CLI-shaped HTML-to-PDF workflows | The package describes itself as a wrapper over headless_chrome. Verify release status and requirements before adopting it. html2pdf crate documentation |
For an application that needs to decide when a dynamic page is ready and control paper settings, use a Rust browser API. A subprocess is simpler for a small batch task, but the app then owns Chrome installation, process lifecycle, timeouts, and error reporting.

Convert a URL with Playwright for Rust
The documented API is a PDF builder on a page. The following illustrates the control flow; exact crate setup and method signatures can vary with the Playwright Rust version you select, so use the API documentation for that version when wiring it into a project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Install and configure Playwright for Rust and a compatible Chromium browser as described by the version you choose.
- Start or connect to Chromium in headless mode, create a page, and navigate to the target URL.
- Wait for the navigation and any application-specific asynchronous content, such as a known element or data load.
- Choose print or screen media, then set paper format, margins, backgrounds, and other PDF options.
- Write the generated PDF bytes to a file and handle navigation, browser, and filesystem errors.
The API documents page.pdf() for Chromium headless. This is an API outline rather than a complete, version-pinned Rust program: the documentation supplied for this topic does not establish a crate version or a verified dependency and launch recipe, so pin and verify those details against the crate release you deploy. See the Playwright Rust Page API.

Print CSS versus screen styling
PDF generation uses print CSS by default. That is appropriate when the site has print-specific rules, but can omit navigation, change colors, or rearrange content compared with the visible page. If the PDF should follow screen styling, emulate screen media before invoking PDF generation.
Paper, margins, backgrounds, and page ranges
The PDF API documents paper formats including Letter and A4, custom dimensions with units, margins, page ranges, landscape orientation, background printing, and header/footer templates. Select explicit values when consistent output matters; otherwise the browser’s defaults and the page’s print styles can shape the result.
- Enable background printing when the design relies on background colors or images.
- Set paper format and margins to control usable page area and wrapping.
- Use page ranges when only a subset of pages is needed.
- Header/footer templates can include page information, but their scripts do not run and page styles are not visible inside the templates.
Preserve print colors when needed
PDF generation adjusts colors for print by default. For exact brand or design colors, the documentation points to the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust. Apply it deliberately: retaining screen colors may reduce print readability or increase ink use on physical pages.

Use chromiumoxide and Chromium’s print command
chromiumoxide exposes Chromium DevTools Protocol’s PrintToPdfParams, giving Rust code a route to the browser’s print-to-PDF controls. As with Playwright, connect to a compatible Chromium instance, wait until the page is ready, set the print parameters, and persist the returned PDF data. Check the documentation for the exact crate release and parameters used by your application; compatibility and maintenance rankings among these crates are not established here.
Print a webpage by invoking Chrome Headless
For a basic batch conversion, Rust can start Chrome as a subprocess and pass the URL and output path. This example assumes Chrome is installed at the named executable and available to the process. Adjust the executable path for your deployment.
use std::process::Command;
fn main() -> Result<(), Box<dyn std::error::Error>> {
let status = Command::new("google-chrome")
.args([
"--headless",
"--disable-gpu",
"--no-pdf-header-footer",
"--print-to-pdf=page.pdf",
"https://example.com",
])
.status()?;
if !status.success() {
return Err(format!("Chrome exited with status: {status}").into());
}
Ok(())
}
Chrome documents printing a URL using --headless --print-to-pdf, an option to suppress PDF headers and footers, and a timeout control. Consult the Chrome Headless documentation for current flag spelling and behavior. A production wrapper should use a process API that supports a deadline, capture standard error, validate that the output file exists and is non-empty, and avoid blocking a service indefinitely on a hung page.

Make page readiness and output predictable
A browser can finish navigation before all content a reader expects is visible. A page may fetch data after load, lazy-load images as it scrolls, or depend on fonts. Define readiness for the target site rather than assuming a navigation event means the PDF is complete.
- Wait for a stable navigation state and, when possible, a selector that indicates the relevant content is present.
- For known dynamic pages, wait for the application’s data or rendering signal before printing.
- Test font and image loading, including lazy-loaded content, with the page types you need to convert.
- Set print or screen media intentionally and verify page breaks, colors, paper size, and margins on representative pages.
- Use a timeout and return a useful error when the browser or page does not complete.
Deployment, performance, and cost considerations
Chromium is part of the runtime
These methods render browser HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; they are not a Rust-only HTML parser. Your deployment needs a compatible Chromium binary and its platform/runtime dependencies. Confirm the browser version, operating-system support, and crate compatibility for your chosen environment before committing to a route.
Manage startup, concurrency, and failures
Launching a browser process for every URL adds process-management work; a long-running browser can avoid repeated startup but requires lifecycle and isolation decisions. The sources establish the available control surfaces, not comparative performance measurements. Measure startup time, memory use, and throughput with your own page mix, and set limits on concurrent jobs, navigation time, and output size as appropriate for your service.
Report failures by stage—browser launch, navigation, readiness wait, PDF generation, or file write—so operators can distinguish an unavailable binary from a slow or broken target page. For repeatable output, track the Chromium version and print settings alongside the job configuration.

- Chrome executable not found: install Chromium/Chrome in the runtime image or configure the executable path used by your process.
- PDF is missing content: wait for the page’s asynchronous data and required elements before printing; navigation completion alone may be too early.
- PDF layout differs from the browser: print CSS is the default. Select screen media before printing if screen styling is the intended result, then check page breaks and dimensions.
- Background colors or images disappear: enable background printing in the PDF options. For colors altered for print, use
-webkit-print-color-adjustwhere exact colors are required. - Header/footer template is incomplete: template scripts do not execute, and page styles are not available inside the template; build the template without relying on either.
- Command returns an error or no output: inspect the process exit status and standard error, confirm the destination is writable, and check that Chrome can reach the URL from the deployment environment.
- Conversion hangs: enforce a deadline for navigation and the subprocess or browser operation, then surface a timeout rather than waiting indefinitely. Chrome’s headless documentation describes a capture timeout control.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a hosted screenshot or PDF capture instead of installing and managing Chromium, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request. For a PDF, use its documented PDF options; the basic request below saves a WebP screenshot:
