Choose BrowserCat when a screenshot is the last step in an interactive browser workflow; choose URLbox when you mainly need a configured render from a URL or HTML input. They overlap, but BrowserCat exposes a managed Chromium session you control with browser automation code, while URLbox exposes a render API with screenshot and other output options. The distinction follows their published interfaces, not a head-to-head performance test. BrowserCat quick start; URLbox overview.
How BrowserCat and URLbox differ
| Decision | BrowserCat | URLbox |
|---|---|---|
| Primary model | Managed Chromium browser session, connected through Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP. | Render service that accepts a URL or HTML and returns a selected rendered or structured output. |
| Before capture | Use browser automation code to navigate, click, wait, inspect, and then take a screenshot. | Configure a render request with documented controls such as delays and selectors. |
| Capture scope | Screenshot is part of the connected browser workflow. | Explicitly documents full-page and CSS-selector element captures. |
| Outputs | Browser-controlled output through the automation workflow; the vendor also markets image, PDF, and video use cases. | Documentation lists images, PDF, video, Markdown, JSON/metadata, and hydrated HTML. |
| Integration | Playwright, Puppeteer, and CDP-based clients. BrowserCat recommends Playwright and says it does not plan Selenium or Cypress support. | Render links and REST API patterns, with SDKs listed for several languages. |
| Billing unit | WebSocket activity is metered in 30-second credit units, rounded up; successful Utility API requests cost one credit each. | The reviewed product page advertises a seven-day trial; a comparable current plan price is not established in the cited pages. |
| Geography and proxy | Describes global browser routing and bring-your-own proxy support; explicit region routing is described as on the roadmap in its configuration docs. | Advertises geographic origin controls, stealth, and proxy options. |
Capabilities and prices can change; consult the linked vendor pages for current terms before building around a specific option.

When BrowserCat is the better fit
BrowserCat is the more natural fit if the screenshot must reflect actions or state that you establish in a browser: sign in, navigate a multi-step flow, click a control, wait for a specific condition, inspect the page, and then capture it. Its quick start connects Playwright to BrowserCat’s cloud Chromium and calls the normal page screenshot method. The same browser-session abstraction supports interactions before capture. #1 Best Overall
BrowserCat describes a single endpoint and API key routing sessions to browser backends. Its homepage identified Cloudflare as live and other backends as planned when checked on October 3, 2026; treat that as a dated vendor snapshot, not a permanent topology. The same page describes routing based on capability, cost, region, latency, and availability, with automatic failover. BrowserCat homepage.
When URLbox is the better fit
URLbox suits applications that need a render from a URL or supplied HTML, with options expressed in a request rather than a long-lived browser automation session. Its overview describes image, PDF, video, text, HTML, and metadata outputs, along with render links and synchronous or asynchronous JSON requests, polling, and webhooks. It lists use cases such as product screenshots, archives, visual checks, and scheduled captures; these are vendor-described capabilities and use cases. URLbox overview.
For full-page captures, URLbox documents a default stitch mode that scrolls the page, triggers lazy loading and animations, freezes fixed and sticky elements, and stitches sections. Its native mode uses the browser’s native full-page capability and is described as faster but potentially less reliable on some pages. URLbox also documents CSS-selector element capture. Compare costs using the job you actually run
BrowserCat publishes credit-based pricing. Its pricing page, checked October 3, 2026, lists Hobby at $0 per month with 1,000 credits per month and Business with a $50-per-month base; the page also describes 1,000 concurrent requests. A WebSocket request consumes one credit per 30 seconds of activity, rounded up, while each successful Utility API request consumes one credit. The displayed overage rates are $0.0025 per extra Hobby credit and $0.00175 per extra Business credit. Business overage prices and effective costs depend on the selected credit quantities, so use the live pricing selector to calculate an expected bill. These rates and plan terms are volatile. BrowserCat pricing.
For WebSocket use, session duration affects credit consumption in 30-second increments: navigation, waits, interactions, and retries may all lengthen the billed activity. The reviewed URLbox product page advertises a seven-day no-card trial but does not establish a directly comparable current plan price. Do not infer a per-screenshot price from the trial alone. URLbox screenshot API.
Before choosing, estimate the same workload for both providers. Record monthly jobs, typical and tail render duration, retries, captures per browser session, full-page or element requirements, viewport sizes, output format, and any geographic or proxy needs. Price that workload against each vendor’s live terms. If you include engineering time, label it as your estimate rather than vendor pricing.

How to choose without a misleading speed or accuracy claim
The reviewed documentation does not establish a matched independent BrowserCat-versus-URLbox speed or accuracy result. URLbox publishes performance statements on its product page, but those are vendor claims, not a comparative benchmark. The page displayed claims of 800M+ screenshots rendered, 1,700+ customers, an approximately three-second average render, 99.9% success, and more than 100 rendering options when accessed in 2026; the page does not date those figures individually, and they were not independently validated here. URLbox screenshot API.
For your own decision, compare both with the same target sites, viewport, wait conditions, geography, capture mode, and output requirements. Include sites with lazy-loaded content, long pages, consent prompts, and any access controls your lawful workflow encounters. Record the conditions, sample size, failure handling, and date; neither service should be assumed to capture every site successfully under every configuration.
ScreenshotNeo: an alternative to try first
If your job is primarily “give me a screenshot or PDF for this URL,” try ScreenshotNeo first: it is a screenshot API and MCP server, with clean captures and billing that excludes failed or non-page results. It may be a better fit than setting up a remote browser session when you do not need custom browser automation.

One GET request returns a screenshot. Example using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
