How to Convert a 2014 D&D Character to the 2024 Rules

You do not need to throw away a fifth-edition character made with the 2014 rules. The 2024 core books update the fifth-edition ruleset and are designed to remain compatible with adventures and supplements you already own. Conversion is best handled as a controlled rebuild: preserve the original sheet, choose a single rules baseline with your Dungeon Master (DM), replace options that have 2024 versions, and recalculate every dependent statistic.

There is no official percentage, formula, or one-click conversion that works for every character. The correct result depends on the class, subclass, species, background, feats, spells, equipment, and the campaign’s policy for retaining older material.

What “conversion” means under the 2024 rules

The 2024 Player’s Handbook updates fifth edition rather than creating a separate, incompatible game. Wizards of the Coast’s FAQ describes the relationship plainly: “No. The 2024 core rulebooks are updating the fifth edition ruleset.” The same guidance says the new books work with adventures and supplements already owned.

That compatibility does not mean every character element is interchangeable. The 2024 Player’s Handbook replaces the 2014 versions of the core rules, classes, subclasses, spells, feats, equipment, species, and backgrounds when a 2024 version exists. A converted character therefore uses the 2024 text for those elements, while older options without a replacement may remain available under the stated compatibility rules or a specific DM ruling.

Think of the process as rebuilding the character from an approved parts list, not editing a few labels on the old sheet. Your level, experience, hit points, ability scores, and magic items may remain useful starting data, but every value that depends on a changed rule must be checked again.

Choose a rules baseline before changing the sheet

Ask the DM which rules the campaign uses for characters, monsters, spells, feats, equipment, and optional material. Record the answer before making mechanical changes. Two approaches are clear and internally consistent:

Approach What stays When it makes sense Main risk
Fully 2014 2014 class, subclass, species, background, feats, spells, equipment rules, and feature text The campaign is continuing on the original rules or the group wants no mechanical change New 2024 options and wording are not used for this character
2024 baseline 2024 class and replacement options, plus compatible older options that have no replacement or that the DM explicitly allows The table is adopting the updated core books Mixing an updated class with an outdated replacement can create timing and balance conflicts

A character can also remain mechanically 2014 while the campaign uses 2024 adventures and monsters. “Using the 2024 books” is not by itself permission to combine every 2014 and 2024 option. Put the campaign decision in writing on the character sheet or conversion ledger.

Make a safe copy of the original character

  1. Export or photocopy the 2014 sheet. Keep the original untouched so you can restore it if the group rejects a conversion or an interaction proves unclear.
  2. Write down the character’s current state. Record level, experience, ability scores, hit points, hit-die information, armor and shield, weapons, spells, prepared or known spells, feats, class features, subclass features, species traits, background benefits, currencies, tool proficiencies, languages, and magic items.
  3. Create a duplicate sheet or a conversion ledger. Use one row for each element and include the 2014 text, the proposed 2024 text, the source book, and the DM’s ruling.
  4. Freeze temporary effects. Note current conditions, concentrating spells, expended feature uses, and temporary hit points separately. Recalculate the permanent character first, then restore the temporary state at the table.

A ledger prevents a common mistake: changing a class or feat and forgetting that the alteration affects spell preparation, attack bonuses, saving-throw DCs, or available actions.

Rebuild each character element in dependency order

1. Class and level

Start with the 2024 class at the character’s existing level, unless the DM is also approving a level change. Read the entire class entry for that level rather than replacing only the feature whose name looks different. A revised class can alter when features arrive, how often they can be used, what action they require, or which ability modifier they use.

Copy the 2024 class’s proficiencies, starting or level-based equipment rules, feature uses, recovery rules, and spellcasting instructions into the new sheet. Do not assume that a familiar feature works because its name is unchanged.

2. Subclass

Use the 2024 subclass when one is published for the class. D&D Beyond marks older material with a Legacy badge. Its changelog states that if a subclass received a 2024 update, the older subclass cannot be used with the 2024 class in D&D Beyond; the older subclass remains usable with the 2014 class.

  • NEW CHARACTER OPTIONS YOU’LL LOVE—Create unforgettable characters with 12 core classes, 48 intriguing subclasses, and 10 distinctive species. Buff up your character’s backstory with 16 compelling backgrounds and 75 fantastic feats

This gives you a practical rule: do not pair a 2024 class with a 2014 subclass that has a published 2024 replacement. Keep that combination only if the DM makes a deliberate table ruling and records it. If the subclass is absent from the 2024 Player’s Handbook and has no stated replacement, check the source text and ask the DM instead of treating absence as automatic permission.

Examples specifically identified as 2014 subclasses absent from the 2024 Player’s Handbook include Knowledge Domain, Nature Domain, Tempest Domain, and School of Conjuration. Their absence means you need a source-and-DM decision; it does not by itself tell you to delete them or to update them.

3. Species

Replace the 2014 species entry with its 2024 counterpart when one exists. Copy every trait from the selected 2024 text and remove obsolete 2014 traits that the new entry no longer grants. If the character uses a species not represented in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, record whether the DM is retaining the 2014 entry as Legacy material.

4. Background

Use the 2024 background text when available. Backgrounds can affect ability-score choices, proficiencies, equipment, and feat access, so changing one may alter more than the background paragraph on the sheet. Recheck the resulting ability modifiers, skill bonuses, tool bonuses, and starting equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Feats

Substitute a 2024 feat for a 2014 feat when a replacement is published and the character qualifies for it. Verify prerequisites, ability-score increases, usage limits, and action timing. If an older feat has no 2024 replacement, ask whether it remains Legacy material and note the ruling. Do not silently apply a similarly named feat with different wording.

6. Spells

Replace a spell with its 2024 version when the spell is updated. Compare casting time, range, duration, components, concentration, target wording, saving throw, attack roll, damage, conditions, and upcasting text. Rebuild the prepared or known spell list from the 2024 class rules, then check spell attack modifiers and save DCs after ability scores and proficiency are finalized.

7. Equipment and magic items

Review armor, shields, weapons, ammunition, tools, and adventuring gear against the 2024 equipment rules. Then inspect each magic item for interactions with the updated weapon, armor, spell, or action rules. Keep the item only as written by the campaign’s chosen source, and ask the DM about an item whose operation depends on a changed rule.

Recalculate derived statistics instead of copying them

Once the primary choices are settled, calculate the dependent numbers again. A copied number can look plausible while being wrong because a proficiency, ability modifier, equipment rule, or feature changed.

  • Armor Class: Rebuild it from the selected armor, shield, Dexterity limit, class or species traits, and any magic-item bonus.
  • Attack bonuses: Recalculate weapon and spell attacks from the correct ability modifier, proficiency bonus, weapon properties, and class features.
  • Damage: Check ability modifiers, fighting or class features, weapon properties, and any once-per-turn or usage restrictions.
  • Spell save DCs: Recalculate from the 2024 spellcasting ability and proficiency bonus.
  • Prepared or known spells: Apply the 2024 class formula at the character’s level; do not assume the 2014 count carries over.
  • Saving throws and skills: Verify proficiency, expertise-like benefits, ability assignments, and any background or species additions.
  • Hit points and healing: Confirm hit-die rules, level-based increases, Constitution modifier, and class features that modify maximum or regained hit points.
  • Feature uses: Re-enter per-rest, per-turn, per-round, proficiency-based, and once-per-day uses from the 2024 text.
  • Initiative, speed, senses, and passive scores: Recalculate if the species, background, equipment, or class changes any contributor.
  • Weapon mastery choices: If the 2024 class grants weapon mastery, select legal weapons and record the mastery properties exactly as the class and weapon entries state.

Do these calculations after the class, subclass, species, background, feats, spells, and equipment are final. Otherwise you will have to repeat the work after every change.

Use a conversion ledger to resolve mixed-source questions

A simple ledger makes DM approval auditable:

Character element 2014 entry 2024 replacement Decision Follow-up calculations
Class Name and level 2024 class and level Use 2024 or retain 2014 Features, proficiencies, spellcasting, weapon mastery
Subclass Name and source 2024 subclass, if published Use replacement, Legacy, or DM ruling Subclass features and timing
Species 2014 traits 2024 species Replace or retain as Legacy Speed, senses, traits, proficiencies
Background 2014 benefits 2024 background Replace or retain as Legacy Scores, skills, tools, feat, equipment
Feat 2014 feat 2024 feat, if published Replace, retain, or remove Prerequisites, score increases, uses
Spell 2014 text 2024 text Use current text or Legacy text Preparation, attacks, DCs, concentration
Item 2014 equipment or magic item 2024 interaction check Keep, adjust by source, or ask DM AC, attacks, actions, attunement interactions

For every row marked “DM ruling,” write the date or session in which the decision was made and keep the exact wording of the exception. This avoids an argument later about whether an old option was intentionally retained or merely overlooked.

D&D Beyond: what changes and what does not

Existing 2014 character sheets are not mechanically rewritten automatically. D&D Beyond says they retain their 2014 abilities, spells, items, and conditions, although interface labels such as “Species” and “Heroic Inspiration” may be updated. Treat a label change as a display change, not proof that the character has been converted.

When you own and enable both sets of books, the builder can expose 2014 and 2024 sources. Older material is marked Legacy. Use the builder as a source-aware checklist, but verify the result against the campaign’s written policy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Duplicate the existing 2014 character rather than editing the only copy.
  2. Set the campaign’s available sources and rules baseline.
  3. Enable the 2024 books and leave Legacy material visible when the DM allows it.
  4. Replace class, subclass, species, background, feats, spells, and equipment one category at a time.
  5. Review every warning about prerequisites, unavailable options, or conflicting sources.
  6. Recalculate and inspect the summary page for AC, attacks, spell DCs, prepared spells, proficiencies, feature uses, and weapon mastery.
  7. Ask the DM to approve the final sheet and any retained Legacy entries before play.

If the builder blocks a 2014 subclass paired with a 2024 class, that reflects D&D Beyond’s source handling for an updated subclass. It does not replace the table’s need to decide whether the character remains fully 2014 or moves to a supported 2024 combination.

Common conversion choices and their trade-offs

Keep the character fully 2014

This is the least disruptive option. Preserve the class, subclass, spells, feats, equipment, and feature text from the 2014 sources and mark the sheet as 2014. It is appropriate when the campaign is not adopting the updated core rules or when the player prefers continuity. The trade-off is that the character will not use 2024 replacements or revised wording.

Move to a 2024 class and replace updated options

This gives the character the intended 2024 class chassis and current replacements. Rebuild all dependent numbers and expect the action economy, feature timing, preparation rules, or weapon interactions to differ. This is the cleanest choice when the entire table is using 2024 classes.

Retain a 2014 option with no replacement

Use this only when the option is genuinely absent from the 2024 material or the DM explicitly permits it. Record the source and the ruling. Do not infer that every unlisted 2014 option is automatically legal; check each case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mix a 2024 class with an outdated subclass that has a 2024 update

Avoid this combination. The revised class and revised subclass are written as a package, and D&D Beyond does not support the older subclass with the 2024 class when an update exists. If the group wants an exception, treat it as a house rule requiring an explicit DM decision and careful review of feature timing.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

“My old sheet changed labels, so is it converted?”

No. D&D Beyond can update interface terminology while preserving the character’s 2014 mechanics. Check the class, subclass, spell text, feats, items, and source badges rather than relying on labels.

“The builder removed my subclass.”

First determine whether the subclass has a 2024 replacement. If it does, choose the 2024 subclass with the 2024 class or keep the entire character on the 2014 class. If it does not, confirm whether the source is enabled and ask the DM whether it is retained as Legacy material.

“My attack bonus or spell DC no longer matches the old sheet.”

That can be correct after conversion. Recheck proficiency bonus, ability scores, class spellcasting rules, equipment, feats, and any feature that grants a bonus. Compare the calculation line by line rather than forcing the old number onto the new sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A spell or feat has the same name but behaves differently.”

Use the text from the selected rules baseline. Compare timing, duration, concentration, targets, saving throws, damage, prerequisites, and usage limits. Name similarity is not evidence that the wording is unchanged.

“The DM and player disagree about an absent option.”

Keep the original 2014 copy, show the exact source entry, and write the decision in the ledger. The character can remain 2014 while the table reaches a separate decision about the 2024 campaign.

Final conversion checklist

  • The DM has confirmed whether the character is fully 2014 or uses a 2024 baseline.
  • The original 2014 sheet is preserved.
  • Class and subclass compatibility has been checked, including whether a 2024 subclass replacement exists.
  • Species, background, feats, spells, and equipment have been replaced or explicitly retained.
  • Legacy options have a recorded source and DM ruling.
  • Armor Class, attacks, damage, spell attacks, save DCs, prepared spells, saves, skills, hit points, senses, speed, feature uses, and weapon mastery have been recalculated.
  • Magic-item interactions and action timing have been reviewed.
  • The final duplicate sheet matches the campaign’s enabled sources.
  • The DM has approved unresolved edge cases before the next session.

The practical answer to “Do I have to rebuild my old character?” is: only if the table is moving that character to the 2024 rules. If you do convert, rebuild deliberately and keep the 2014 sheet as a rollback copy. The 2024 books are an update to fifth edition, so your adventures and older supplements remain usable; the work is deciding which character elements are updated, which are retained as Legacy, and which require the DM’s explicit approval.
