How to Control Focus from Your iPhone Lock Screen

A linked Lock Screen activates its associated Focus when selected. For direct Focus controls without changing wallpaper, use Control Center.

You can link an iPhone Lock Screen to a Focus so selecting that wallpaper also activates the Focus. Apple’s documented instructions do not add a separate Focus on/off button to the Lock Screen; for direct activation, use Control Center. Here’s how to set up either workflow.

Link a Focus to a Lock Screen

This option is useful when you want a particular wallpaper to go with a Focus such as Work, Personal, Sleep, or Do Not Disturb. Once linked, selecting that Lock Screen turns on its associated Focus; switching to another Lock Screen changes Focus as well. Apple says the wallpaper-linking feature is available in iOS 16 and later. Apple Support: Set up a Focus on iPhone Apple Support: Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone or iPad

  1. Wake your iPhone, then touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears.
  2. If necessary, swipe to the Lock Screen you want to configure and tap Customize.
  3. Tap Focus near the bottom of the Lock Screen preview.
  4. Choose the Focus to associate with that wallpaper, then close the Focus picker and finish editing.

To activate the linked Focus later, select that Lock Screen from the gallery.

Turn a Focus on directly with Control Center

If by “toggle” you mean a direct way to choose and activate a Focus without changing wallpaper, Apple documents Control Center as the route. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge. Tap Focus, then tap the Focus you want. • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

When Focus is active, an icon appears on the Lock Screen. To turn the active Focus off there, touch and hold that icon, then tap the active Focus. In Control Center, choosing another Focus turns off the one that was already active. These are documented ways to control Focus; they are distinct from adding a new dedicated Focus button to the Lock Screen.

If Control Center won’t open from the Lock Screen

Check whether access while locked is disabled in passcode settings. On an iPhone with Face ID, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode; on an iPhone with a Home button, go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Review the options under Allow Access When Locked. Disabling access can keep someone holding your phone from viewing personal information, but it also removes your quick access to that feature. Apple Support: Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
