How to Contribute to a Linux Foundation Open-Source Project

Learn how to choose a Linux Foundation project, find a manageable first task, follow project-specific contribution rules, handle DCO or CLA requirements, submit work through the correct channel, and build a lasting contributor relationship.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to make a first contribution is to follow the individual Linux Foundation project’s own repository and community rules. Choose a project you genuinely care about, study its README and contribution documentation, select a small current task, confirm whether it uses a Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO) or a Contributor License Agreement (CLA), submit through the project’s required channel, and stay engaged through review and revisions.

What makes a Linux Foundation contribution different?

The Linux Foundation supports many independent open-source projects, not one centrally managed codebase. Each project can set its own coding style, test requirements, issue references, communication etiquette, review expectations, and legal process. One project may review patches through a pull-request system; another may require a mailing-list submission or a different contribution tool.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That variation is the most important fact for a newcomer: general Git advice is useful, but the target repository’s current instructions control. A contribution that is technically correct can still be rejected if it uses the wrong submission route, omits a required sign-off, ignores formatting rules, or addresses an issue the maintainers are not ready to accept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An effective first contribution is therefore less about finding the most impressive feature and more about demonstrating that you can work within an existing community. Documentation corrections, a reproducible bug fix, a focused test, or another clearly bounded improvement can teach you the project’s tools and review culture without creating an unmanageably large patch.

Choose a project you can stay interested in

Start with the problem area

List the Linux Foundation projects whose software, users, or technical goals interest you. Your first choice does not need to match every skill you currently have. It does need to be a subject you are willing to understand over several review cycles. Interest helps you persist when a maintainer asks for changes or when the code is unfamiliar.

Read the project’s repository landing page and README before looking for an issue. Identify what the project does, who uses it, which languages and tools it expects, and where contributors communicate. Then read the project’s contribution guide, community documentation, and code of conduct.

Study recent community activity

Recent issues, discussions, mailing-list threads, or review conversations reveal practical rules that a short README may not explain. Look for how contributors describe problems, how maintainers ask for tests, whether proposals are discussed before code is written, and how quickly conversations move. This is also where you learn whether a beginner task is genuinely available rather than merely labeled “easy.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Linux Foundation’s guidance emphasizes that projects differ in style, timing, issue handling, and communication. Treat those differences as part of the technical work, not as administrative details to skip.

Compare projects before committing

Comparison area Questions to answer Why it matters for a first contribution
Interest and problem fit Do you understand the project’s purpose, and will you remain motivated when the task becomes difficult? Motivation makes it easier to learn unfamiliar code and complete review rounds.
Beginner onboarding Are starter tasks clearly described? Is there a recent example of a newcomer receiving useful guidance? Clear onboarding reduces the chance that you spend days on an unwanted change.
Communication workflow Does the project use pull requests, mailing lists, chat, meetings, or a combination? The channel determines where questions are asked and how patches are reviewed.
Technical prerequisites Which language, build system, test environment, operating system, and domain knowledge are expected? You can select a task that fits your available time and setup.
Contribution rights Does the project request a DCO sign-off, a CLA, or another agreement? You can resolve authorization questions before submitting work.

These are practical comparison criteria, not an official ranking of Linux Foundation projects. The best project is the one whose technical subject, community habits, requirements, and available time fit together.

Find a first task with a clear boundary

Prefer small, useful work

Good starter tasks include correcting inaccurate documentation, improving an unclear example, reproducing and fixing a contained bug, adding a focused test, or making a narrowly scoped maintenance change. The Linux Foundation’s mentorship guidance uses documentation edits as an example of an appropriate entry task.

A small task should still matter to the project. Avoid changing wording, architecture, or style across the entire repository unless maintainers have explicitly requested that work. A patch that is easy to review is more useful than a large patch that combines unrelated improvements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that the issue is current

Read the complete issue or discussion, including recent comments. Confirm that nobody else is already working on it, that the described behavior still exists, and that the proposed outcome is still wanted. An old issue may have been fixed, superseded, or deliberately deferred.

If the intended change is unclear, ask a focused question in the project’s normal discussion channel. Explain what you inspected, what behavior you observed, and the specific decision you need. Asking before coding can prevent a technically polished but unwanted contribution.

Define “done” before coding

  • State the problem in one or two sentences.
  • Identify the files, documentation pages, or tests likely to change.
  • Record the expected behavior or wording after the change.
  • Note the project’s required checks and how you will run them.
  • Decide what is deliberately outside the scope of this patch.

If you cannot describe the boundary, the task is probably not yet ready for a first contribution. Ask maintainers to confirm the intended scope rather than silently expanding it.

Learn the project’s local rules before editing

Read the authoritative documents

At minimum, inspect the repository’s README, contribution instructions, code of conduct, license, and any developer or testing guide. Follow links from those documents to issue templates, review checklists, mailing-list instructions, and automation requirements. A repository may contain rules in more than one place, so use the newest project-maintained instruction when documents appear to conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to exact requirements: formatting tools, commit-message conventions, test commands, documentation generators, issue numbers, supported runtime versions, and required screenshots or logs. Do not assume that a convention from another Linux Foundation project transfers to this one.

Understand the submission channel

Channel pattern What you should do Common mistake
Pull-request review Use the repository’s stated branch and pull-request process, complete the required template, and monitor automated checks. Opening a pull request before reading the template or linking the relevant issue.
Mailing-list patch review Follow the project’s patch formatting, recipient, subject, and threading instructions; include the context maintainers require. Assuming a web pull request is accepted when the project expects an emailed patch.
Another project-specific system Use the tool and sequence named in the contribution documentation, even if it differs from workflows you already know. Applying a familiar workflow without confirming that it is supported.

There is no universal Linux Foundation submission channel. The repository’s current contribution guide is the controlling source.

Prepare a reproducible local setup

Install only the dependencies and versions documented by the project. Before changing files, run the baseline tests or checks when the project provides them. This gives you evidence that a later failure comes from your change rather than from an incomplete setup. Keep a short record of commands, versions, and any environment-specific limitation so you can include useful details in review.

For documentation work, preview the generated pages if the project provides a documentation build. For a bug fix, capture the original failure and the expected result. For a test change, understand what behavior the test protects. The goal is not to create an elaborate laboratory; it is to make your result understandable and repeatable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether a DCO or CLA applies

Developer Certificate of Origin

A Developer Certificate of Origin is a contributor affirmation commonly attached to a commit message. Linux Foundation guidance notes that many Linux Foundation-hosted projects require a DCO sign-off. The exact sign-off wording and procedure belong to the target project, so copy the format from its contribution documentation rather than improvising it.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

A DCO sign-off does not replace the project’s other requirements. You still need to follow its license, review, authorship, and submission rules. If an automated check reports a missing or malformed sign-off, correct the commit history using the project’s documented method and resubmit.

Contributor License Agreement

A CLA is a separate mechanism for documenting rights in contributions. Some projects use one, some use a DCO, and some use another arrangement. Do not sign an agreement merely because another project required it; first verify what this repository requests and whether the agreement is individual or corporate.

If you are contributing work created for an employer, confirm who owns the rights and which approval process applies. Linux Foundation EasyCLA guidance warns against submitting company work under an individual CLA and advises consulting your employer’s legal department when the correct agreement is uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question DCO CLA
What it is A contributor affirmation, commonly recorded in a commit message. An agreement documenting rights in contributions.
How it is handled Usually attached to each contribution as the project instructs. Accepted through the project’s designated individual or corporate process.
Who decides whether it applies The target project’s contribution policy. The target project’s contribution policy.
What to do when unsure Read the repository instructions and ask maintainers. Determine whether you are acting personally or for an employer; consult the employer’s legal team if needed.

DCO and CLA are not interchangeable labels. Follow the project’s own policy rather than relying on a generic assumption about Linux Foundation projects.

Make the change and document it for reviewers

Keep the patch focused

Implement only the agreed task. Avoid unrelated formatting changes, opportunistic refactors, or dependency upgrades unless maintainers asked for them. A focused diff lets reviewers verify the behavior quickly and makes it easier to revise one decision without reopening the entire patch.

Use the project’s naming, formatting, documentation, and test conventions. If the project requests an issue reference, include it in the prescribed location. Preserve existing copyright and license notices unless the project explicitly tells contributors to update them.

Run the required checks

  • Run the documented formatter or linter.
  • Run the relevant unit, integration, or documentation checks.
  • Repeat the original reproduction steps for a bug fix.
  • Review the final diff for accidental files, secrets, generated artifacts, and unrelated edits.
  • Verify the required DCO sign-off or CLA status before submission.

If a check cannot run in your environment, say so plainly and provide the reason. Do not claim that a test passed when you did not run it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write a reviewable submission

Describe the problem, the approach, the observable result, and the checks you ran. Link the relevant issue only where the project’s process asks for it. Include logs or screenshots when they clarify a user-visible change, while removing credentials and other sensitive data.

For a mailing-list patch, follow the project’s required subject line, threading, recipient, and patch-format instructions. For a pull request, complete every required template field and keep the discussion in the project’s chosen review location.

Expect review, questions, and revision rounds

Review is part of contribution, not a final administrative step. Maintainers may ask for a narrower scope, additional tests, different wording, a design discussion, or a change to the submission format. A valid contribution can be declined because it conflicts with project direction, duplicates existing work, lacks maintainership capacity, or does not meet the project’s requirements.

Respond constructively

  1. Read all comments before replying so you understand the complete request.
  2. Answer the specific question and provide evidence from your tests or reproduction steps.
  3. Make requested changes in small, understandable revisions.
  4. Explain respectfully when you disagree, including the trade-off or evidence behind your view.
  5. Ask for clarification when two comments appear to conflict.
  6. Update the description when the patch’s scope or behavior changes.

Do not interpret a request for changes as a personal rejection. Review teaches you the project’s unwritten conventions and helps maintainers assess whether they can support the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know when to pause

If a discussion becomes unclear or stalls, summarize the current decision, the unresolved question, and the next action you propose. If you cannot continue, tell the maintainers rather than leaving an active task without context. A clear pause is more helpful than an unexplained disappearance.

Turn a first patch into an ongoing contribution

After an accepted change, continue participating where your time allows. Answer follow-up questions about documentation you changed, help reproduce related bugs, improve tests, or maintain a component you introduced. Larger features and standalone components often require an ongoing maintainer relationship rather than a one-time submission.

Seek feedback from an experienced contributor when the project offers that path. A mentor or regular contributor can help you interpret review comments, identify an appropriately scoped task, and avoid workflow mistakes. Build trust by being reliable about the commitments you make and transparent about your availability.

What to compare in a mentorship opportunity

Item What to verify on the current program page
Participating project Whether the project you want is included in the current cycle.
Prerequisites Required skills, tools, residency or eligibility conditions, and preliminary tasks.
Application period Opening and closing dates for that specific project or cohort.
Expected schedule Start date, workload, milestones, communication expectations, and assessment points.
Mentor and project match Whether the proposed work fits your interests and the mentor’s available guidance.

Do not rely on a past calendar or assume that every listed project offers the same terms. The current program and project pages control.

Common first-contribution problems and fixes

“I opened a pull request, but the project uses a mailing list.”

Close or withdraw the incorrect submission if the project asks you to do so, then follow the documented patch-submission process. Preserve the useful context from your original work, but do not assume maintainers will transfer it automatically.

“The automated check says my contribution lacks a sign-off.”

Read the project’s DCO instructions and correct the commit message or submission metadata exactly as specified. If the project uses a CLA instead, complete the applicable individual or corporate process. When employer ownership is involved, stop and confirm the proper authorization before resubmitting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The issue looked beginner-friendly, but maintainers rejected my approach.”

Ask which assumption was wrong and whether a smaller or different task would be useful. Labels are not guarantees of acceptance. The project’s current priorities and technical direction take precedence over an old issue description.

“I cannot reproduce the reported bug.”

Record your environment, versions, inputs, and exact steps. Ask the reporter or maintainer for missing reproduction details, then update the issue with what you tested. A careful reproduction report can be a valuable contribution even when it does not immediately produce a code patch.

“Review has gone through several rounds.”

That is normal for collaborative software. Keep each revision focused, respond to every actionable comment, and ask for a clear decision when requirements are ambiguous. If the scope has expanded beyond your availability, tell the maintainer and agree on a smaller deliverable.

A practical pre-submission checklist

  • I can explain what the project does and why this task matters.
  • I read the repository’s README, contribution guide, code of conduct, license, and relevant issue or discussion.
  • I confirmed that the issue is current and that my scope is clear.
  • I know whether submission uses a pull request, mailing list, or another project-specific channel.
  • I followed the documented formatting, testing, and communication conventions.
  • I checked whether a DCO sign-off, CLA, or other rights process applies.
  • If I am working for an employer, I confirmed the correct corporate authorization.
  • I ran the relevant checks and can report what passed, failed, or could not run.
  • My patch contains no unrelated changes or sensitive data.
  • I am prepared to answer questions and revise the work.

Advice from experienced open-source contributors

In an older Linux Foundation expert interview, Linux kernel developer and LWN.net editor Jon Corbet advised: “Find a project which interests you and dig into the code. You will certainly find things that need improvement.” That remains a useful starting principle, but the project’s current documentation determines how an improvement should be proposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same interview attributes this advice to Mark Charlebois, Qualcomm’s Director of Open Source Software Strategy: “Be familiar with coding style, contribution practices, community email etiquette, and copyright assignment practices for the project you are contributing to.” The point is practical: technical ability and community fluency work together.

Optional learning material

A practical book or manual on Git and open-source development can help you learn terminology, branching, review, and community practices. Linux Foundation’s Getting Started with Open Source Development guide covers project choice, first contributions, workflows, and community participation. Use any book as supplementary instruction; the target repository’s current rules take precedence over older general guidance.
