Start with the game’s current official support route, not the company name you remember. On Steam, open the game in your Library, select its Support tab, choose Gameplay or technical issue, then I am having another problem and Contact Game Support. That route leads to the developer or publisher for crashes after launch, bugs, multiplayer failures, gameplay questions, controller problems and third-party DRM. Use Steam or your console maker instead for platform authentication, account access, purchases, retail-key registration and platform-dialog startup errors.
The distinction matters even more after an acquisition, closure or publishing change. The current operator may hold the only working account records, while the platform still controls your purchase transaction. Sending a game bug to platform billing, or an ownership dispute to a public social channel, usually creates delays and can expose sensitive account information.

Choose the team that owns your problem
“Game support” is not one department. A useful first step is to classify the failure by the system that can actually change it.

Steam’s guidance is explicit: after a game has loaded, errors or unexpected behavior not related to Steam authentication or CD Keys should go to the game’s developer or publisher. The platform remains the right destination for Steam account problems, purchases, key registration and errors displayed by Steam itself before the game starts.

Finding the publisher route on Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Open the affected game’s page and select its Support tab.
- Choose Gameplay or technical issue.
- Select I am having another problem.
- Choose Contact Game Support and follow the publisher’s current instructions.
The support destination shown there is more reliable than an old bookmark or a search advertisement because storefront information can be updated when ownership changes. If the game does not appear in your Library, use the platform account or purchase-support route first; the publisher may not be able to see a transaction that never reached its account system.
What changes when a studio or publisher is bought or closes
A corporate change does not automatically move your license, save data, linked account or support history. It changes who may operate the game and who is responsible for answering questions. Treat the transition as an identity-and-records problem: establish the current operator, preserve evidence from the former one, and ask the new team to trace the old records.
Verify the current operator
- Open the game’s current store page on the platform where you bought it. Read the developer and publisher fields, recent announcements and the support link.
- Use the game’s in-client help link or the platform Library support entry where available. These links are more likely to reflect a transfer than a years-old forum post.
- Check that the help domain belongs to the current publisher or the platform. Type the address yourself or reach it from the verified storefront; do not submit credentials to a similarly named domain reached through an advertisement.
- Record the date, the displayed company name and the exact support URL before submitting a ticket. A later redirect can otherwise make it difficult to show where you contacted the company.
If the former studio has shut down completely, the platform can still confirm the purchase and account that owns the license. It generally cannot repair a game-side bug, restore a publisher account or rewrite a developer’s entitlement database. Ask platform support to document the transaction and tell you whether an active publisher account is required, then take that information to the current operator if one exists.

Save previous ticket numbers, email threads, receipts, screenshots of the former account page and any message announcing the sale or closure. In your new ticket, identify the former studio or publisher, name the current operator if known, and include the old case number. This gives the new team a search key instead of forcing you to retell an untraceable story.

Prepare a ticket that can be acted on
Support can work faster when the first message separates facts from guesses. Steam asks players to have their Steam account username and the exact error message, or a detailed description of the unexpected behavior, ready. Add the following information when it applies:
- Game title, edition and installed version.
- Platform and hardware, such as Steam on Windows or a named console.
- The date and time of the failure, including time zone when server activity may matter.
- The exact on-screen error text, copied rather than retyped where possible.
- What you expected to happen and what happened instead.
- Numbered steps that reproduce the issue, including the last successful step.
- Screenshots or a short video showing the error without exposing passwords, payment details or recovery codes.
- Purchase receipt or order number for ownership, missing-content and refund questions.
- The email address or identifier of the linked publisher account, but never its password or one-time security code.
- Previous case numbers and the former and current company names if the game changed hands.
A concise first-ticket format

Attachments included:Use the account identifier that the support form requests. If the form asks for an email address, submit the address tied to the publisher account, not a new address created only for the ticket. Keep payment-card numbers, passwords, authentication codes and full identity documents out of ordinary email unless the official form explicitly requests a protected upload.
Account, ownership and progress: what can and cannot move
Buying a company or changing a publisher does not itself transfer entitlements. Licenses, downloadable content, in-game items and progress can remain bound to the platform account and the publisher account that originally activated them. Ask support to explain the applicable policy before unlinking anything.

For Ubisoft accounts, the published policy says: “All Ubisoft games and in-game content are linked to the platform and Ubisoft account they are activated on.” It also says that games cannot be transferred to another platform or Ubisoft account. That means a request to move a license to a different account may be impossible even when both accounts belong to the same person. An account-support form is the appropriate route for checking the specific record, correcting an error that the policy allows, or discussing recovery.

Ubisoft directs account and other questions to its online contact form. Its public Discord and X channel are not the route for account-related support, so do not post an email address, order number or recovery information there.
EA account relinking
EA warns that when a platform account is unlinked and connected to another EA Account, game progress does not transfer. Rewards, points and items remain on the EA Account to which the platform was first linked. Use EA Help’s account-support hub for account recovery, linking, entitlement and possible merge questions. Do not unlink first as an experiment: the resulting association can leave progress and entitlements on the original account.
Questions to ask before requesting a transfer
- Which platform account currently owns the purchase?
- Which publisher account was first linked to that platform account?
- Is the request for a license, downloadable content, in-game currency, cosmetic items, cloud saves or gameplay progress?
- Does the publisher permit a transfer, or only recovery of the original account?
- What will remain on the old account if a relink is approved?
- Will unlinking disable access or create a waiting period?
Get the answer in writing and keep the case number. A support agent may be able to recover the original account without moving anything, while a voluntary unlink can make the situation harder to reverse.

Public channels are useful for confirming that a service is operating, locating a current announcement or reporting a widespread outage. They are not suitable for proving ownership or recovering an account. Account recovery, missing entitlements, payment disputes and relinking belong in a private, official form.

Signs that a contact page is legitimate
- You reached it from the current storefront, in-game menu or verified publisher domain.
- The page identifies the game or account service and explains what information it collects.
- It does not ask for a password, authenticator code or remote-control access.
- The confirmation message supplies a case number or other traceable reference.
- The sender’s domain matches the company named on the official support page.
Be cautious of “account recovery” forms found through search ads, direct messages or fan forums. A genuine agent does not need your password to verify a purchase. If you already submitted sensitive information to a suspicious page, change the affected password through the official site, revoke active sessions where the service allows it, enable multifactor authentication and tell the legitimate support team what happened.

Basic checks can distinguish a local configuration problem from a service or account problem, but they should not erase evidence. Before changing files or reinstalling:
- Write down the exact error and capture it in a screenshot.
- Note whether the problem affects only this game or other games on the same platform.
- Check the platform’s service-status notice and the game’s official announcement channel for a current outage.
- Confirm that the game and platform are updated through their normal update tools.
- Restart the game and platform once, then record whether the symptom changes.
- If you use a third-party overlay, controller, mod or DRM component, record whether disabling it changes the result; do not remove paid content or delete saves merely to test.
- Back up local saves and configuration files before reinstalling or deleting anything.
Send the results, including what did not help, in the ticket. Avoid repeatedly changing linked accounts while troubleshooting; every relink can alter the ownership state that support needs to inspect.

Common situations and the correct route
The game launches, then crashes
Use the current developer or publisher support route. Include the crash time, exact message, platform, version, reproduction steps and any video or log that the official form requests. If Steam itself shows an authentication or key-registration error before the game loads, open a Steam support case instead and describe the platform dialog verbatim.
The old support website is dead
Start at the current storefront page and the game’s Library support link. Confirm the current operator’s domain, then submit a private ticket. Mention the former company name and any old case number so the new team can search migrated records. If no operator is listed, ask the platform to confirm your purchase and whether it has an active publisher-support destination.
You bought the game but it is missing
Contact the platform that processed the purchase with the order number, account username and transaction date. A publisher cannot normally correct a platform transaction it cannot see. Once the platform confirms ownership, provide that confirmation to the publisher if the game requires a separate account entitlement.
Your publisher account is inaccessible
Use the publisher’s account-recovery form, not a public social post. Supply the requested identity and purchase evidence, the former and current company names, and prior case numbers. Do not create multiple replacement accounts or unlink the platform account unless support instructs you to do so.

Progress disappeared after linking or relinking
Stop making further account changes. Tell the publisher exactly which platform account was linked first, which account is linked now, when the change occurred and what progress or items are missing. Policies such as EA’s can keep progress and entitlements on the original account, so recovery may be possible only through that original association.
Multiplayer stopped working after a studio change
First determine whether the failure is a platform sign-in problem or an in-game service problem. Platform authentication errors go to the platform; a game server, matchmaking or in-game account error goes to the current publisher. Include the region, time window, error text and whether other online games work on the same connection.
Escalate without losing the paper trail
- Wait for the confirmation email or case number from the official form.
- Reply in the same case thread with new evidence instead of opening many duplicate tickets.
- If the response is generic, restate the exact requested action: account recovery, entitlement verification, bug diagnosis or transfer-policy clarification.
- Ask which team owns the next step and whether the case has been transferred internally.
- For a platform purchase dispute, keep the platform case separate from the publisher case and cross-reference both numbers.
- If support denies a transfer, ask whether recovery of the original account or restoration of the original link is available; do not assume a denial of transfer means loss of the purchase.
Keep a dated log of every submission, response and account change. This is especially important when a former studio’s records have been migrated and the new operator needs to reconcile two systems.
A practical decision checklist
- Where does the failure occur? Before launch and inside platform dialogs usually means platform support; after loading and inside the game usually means the publisher.
- Is the request about money or ownership? Start with the platform transaction record, then involve the publisher for any separate account entitlement.
- Is an account being recovered or relinked? Use a private publisher form and avoid unlinking until the policy is clear.
- Did the company change? Use the current storefront and Library links, name both operators and include old case numbers.
- Can you reproduce the problem? Provide exact steps, timestamps, error text, version and evidence while preserving saves and account state.
The safest sequence is therefore: identify the system that failed, open the current official route, submit a complete private ticket, and leave account links unchanged until support explains the consequences.
