How to Connect Two Controllers for Two-Player Street Fighter II at Home

To play the original SNES version of Street Fighter II with two people, turn off the console, connect one compatible controller to each controller port, start the game, and choose V.S. Battle. If the game is already in single-player play, press SELECT on the second controller—the controller not currently in use—to join the match. Nintendo’s official manual gives that exact instruction.

On a modern port or emulator, the equivalent is to map two separate input devices before starting versus play: one device to Player 1 and the other to Player 2. The connector, adapter, and menu names depend on the platform, so the reliable test is whether the software shows two independent controller assignments and recognizes each device separately.

What you need for two-player Street Fighter II

The setup has two parts: two working input devices and a game version that supports local versus play. The original SNES release uses the console’s two controller ports. A modern re-release or emulator normally uses two separately mapped controllers, USB devices, or controllers connected through an adapter.

  • Original SNES: one compatible controller in each of the console’s two controller ports.
  • Modern port or emulator: two supported controllers or input devices, with one assigned to Player 1 and the other assigned to Player 2.
  • Game mode: V.S. Battle on the SNES version, or the platform’s local-versus option on a modern release.
  • Joining an active game: on the SNES manual’s single-player flow, press SELECT on the controller that is not currently being used.

You do not need a special tournament accessory or a particular third-party controller model. The important requirements are physical compatibility, independent recognition of the second device, and a game mode intended for fighting another local player.

Original SNES: the exact two-controller setup

1. Power the console down first

Turn off the SNES before connecting or disconnecting wired controllers. This is the safest order for the original hardware and avoids changing controller connections while the console is operating.

2. Connect both controllers

Insert one compatible controller into each controller port on the front of the SNES. Push each connector in firmly and make sure the cable is not pulling the plug sideways. If you are using a replacement pad, verify that its listing explicitly matches the SNES connector and console rather than assuming that a similarly shaped plug is interchangeable.

3. Start Street Fighter II and choose V.S. Battle

Turn on the console, start Street Fighter II, and select V.S. Battle. This is the home version’s mode for fighting another player. Follow the character-selection and versus prompts on screen; each player should use the controller connected to that player’s side.

4. Use the second controller if the game is already in single-player play

If a one-player game is already running, press SELECT on the controller not currently in use. The Nintendo manual describes this as the way to interrupt single-player play and start a two-player match: “Press SELECT on a controller not currently in use to interrupt single-player play and start a two-player match.” In practical terms, Player 1 continues using the first pad while the second player presses SELECT on the second pad.

5. Confirm both players before the round begins

Move the directional control and press a button on each controller during the versus setup. Seeing a response from both pads before the fight begins confirms that the console is receiving two separate inputs. If only one player responds, stop at the troubleshooting section below rather than beginning the round with an unrecognized controller.

Why the SELECT button matters on the SNES version

The second controller is not only for controlling a character after the match has started. In the manual’s single-player flow, the unused controller must send the SELECT command to interrupt that session and initiate two-player play. Pressing SELECT on the controller already being used by Player 1 does not satisfy that instruction.

This distinction explains a common symptom: both controllers appear connected, but the second player never joins. Check which physical pad is currently controlling the game, then press SELECT on the other pad. If you began from the title screen, selecting V.S. Battle is the more direct route; the SELECT action is specifically useful when single-player play is already underway.

The manual does not certify a particular replacement-controller brand or model. It establishes the required behavior—an active controller that is not currently in use—so compatibility should be judged by the connector, console support, and whether the second port is independently recognized.

Modern ports and emulators

Find the controller-assignment screen first

Do not launch the fight until both devices have been assigned. Open the platform or emulator’s controller settings and look for separate entries for Player 1 and Player 2. Capcom’s official playable page labels the home-console game Home Console Fighting and exposes independent Player 1 and Player 2 controller selectors. The exact labels and menu location vary by platform and software version, but the two-player principle is the same.

Assign different devices

  1. Connect or pair the first controller with the platform.
  2. Open the game or system controller settings and select that device for Player 1.
  3. Connect or pair the second controller.
  4. Select the second device for Player 2; do not leave both player slots pointing to the same controller.
  5. Save or apply the mapping, then open the game’s local-versus mode.
  6. Test at least one direction and one button from each controller before starting the round.

For an emulator, the two devices can be USB SNES-style controllers or other supported gamepads. For a modern console or computer port, use whatever controller types the platform’s mapping screen accepts. A USB connection alone does not guarantee two-player operation: the software must expose two independent assignments and recognize each device as a separate input source.

When the port uses a named versus menu

Some releases use a mode name different from the SNES wording. Choose the option that describes local, couch, or versus fighting rather than a network or single-player mode. If the title offers a controller selector before the game launches, set both players there; if it offers the selectors inside the game, make the assignments in that screen and return to versus play.

Adapters and mixed controller types

An adapter can be useful when the platform accepts USB but you want to use SNES-style pads. Connect the adapter, confirm that the operating system or console sees both inputs, and then map each detected device to a different player slot. Adapter behavior is platform-specific, so check that the adapter supports two independent inputs rather than presenting both physical ports as one duplicated device.

Controller options compared

The best choice depends on where you are playing. This table separates the connector and mapping questions that determine whether Player 2 will actually work.

Setup Connector standard Where it fits Button layout Cable or wireless behavior Player 2 requirement
Original SNES controller SNES controller plug Original SNES console Not stated in the official manual Wired Plug into the second console port and use SELECT on that unused controller when joining from single-player play.
SNES-compatible replacement pad Must match the SNES connector and console compatibility listed by the seller Original SNES, if the listing confirms compatibility Verify the listing; no particular third-party model is certified here Depends on the model The console must recognize it independently in the second port.
USB SNES-style controller USB Modern port or emulator that accepts USB gamepads SNES-style layout only when stated by the product listing Depends on whether the controller is wired or wireless Map one USB device to Player 1 and a different USB device to Player 2.
Controller adapter Adapter-specific input on one side and the platform’s supported connector on the other Modern platform or emulator that recognizes the adapter Depends on the connected pad Depends on the adapter and controller Confirm that both physical ports appear as separate assignable devices.

Because no particular third-party model is established as an official requirement, compatibility-led buying is safer than choosing by appearance. Match the connector and console or software support first, then check whether the platform can assign the second device independently.

Troubleshooting: when Player 2 does not work

The second controller is not detected at all

  • Turn the SNES off, remove and reseat the second connector, and power the console on again.
  • Check that the controller is connected to the second physical port rather than left unplugged or partially inserted.
  • On a modern system, verify that the controller is powered, paired or plugged in, and visible in the platform’s controller menu.
  • Test the controller outside the game in the platform menu. If it fails there too, the problem is connection, power, adapter, or controller compatibility rather than the versus mode.

Both players control the same character

Open the mapping screen and inspect the assignments. Player 1 and Player 2 must point to different devices. A duplicated assignment can make two people appear to share one character or cause both sets of inputs to move the same on-screen fighter. Remove the duplicate mapping, select the second controller for Player 2, save, and test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SELECT does nothing on the SNES

Use the controller that is not currently controlling the game. The manual’s instruction is specifically to press SELECT on a controller not currently in use. If you press SELECT on Player 1’s active pad, you are not following the join sequence. If the second pad still produces no response, power down, reseat its connector, and test its buttons in another menu or compatible game.

The controller works in the menu but not in Street Fighter II

Confirm that the game version supports local versus play and that you selected the correct versus mode. On a modern port or emulator, return to the game-specific controller settings rather than relying only on the platform-wide profile. Reassign the devices to the game’s Player 1 and Player 2 slots and apply the changes before relaunching versus play.

An adapter shows only one usable device

Check the adapter’s documentation and the platform’s detected-device list. If both physical ports are presented as one combined input, the software cannot assign them independently as Player 1 and Player 2. Use an adapter that exposes two separate inputs or connect two directly supported controllers instead.

The connectors do not fit

Do not force a plug. SNES-compatible controllers, USB controllers, and adapter cables use different connector standards. Match the controller’s connector to the console or adapter, and match the adapter’s output to the platform. A controller that is electrically or mechanically incompatible will not become compatible through menu mapping.

How to choose a second controller

For an original SNES

Look for a controller explicitly described as compatible with the SNES and fitted with the correct console connector. A second original-style wired pad is the simplest arrangement because it plugs directly into the unused port. Before buying, verify that the listing names your console hardware; a controller designed for a different retro console may use a similar-looking plug without being compatible.

For an emulator or modern release

Choose either two supported USB gamepads or an adapter that the platform recognizes as separate inputs. If you want the familiar SNES controls, a USB SNES-style pad can provide that layout, but the decisive checks are still device recognition and independent Player 1/Player 2 mapping. Wireless models can also work when the platform supports them, but pair each controller separately and confirm which device the mapping screen identifies.

Before completing the purchase

  • Confirm the exact connector: SNES plug, USB, or an adapter connection.
  • Confirm the target hardware: original console, modern console, computer, or emulator.
  • Check whether two controllers can be recognized simultaneously.
  • For adapters, verify that the two physical ports appear as two assignable devices.
  • Check the button layout and cable or wireless behavior if those features matter to your setup.

The official SNES instructions require a second active controller but do not name a preferred manufacturer. That leaves the compatibility details above as the practical buying criteria.

A complete pre-match checklist

  1. Identify the version you are playing: original SNES, modern port, or emulator.
  2. Connect two compatible controllers while the original SNES is powered off, or connect and pair both devices before opening the modern game.
  3. Confirm that the platform or console recognizes each controller separately.
  4. On SNES, select V.S. Battle. On a modern release, select its local-versus option.
  5. On SNES single-player play, press SELECT on the controller not currently in use.
  6. On a modern port or emulator, assign one device to Player 1 and the other to Player 2.
  7. Test a direction and button from each controller before beginning the round.

Once both inputs respond independently, the remaining character-selection and fight controls follow the prompts shown by your particular release.
