How to Connect to Wi-Fi, Secure Your Network, and Fix Common Problems

Connect to Wi-Fi, protect your home router, use public hotspots more safely, and work through common connection and coverage problems.

To connect to Wi-Fi, open your device’s network settings, select the network name, and enter its password. A home connection also needs working internet service and a modem; the Wi-Fi router shares that connection wirelessly. Once online, secure your home network with WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, and troubleshoot a missing network by checking Wi-Fi, range, and device compatibility.

What you need for Wi-Fi at home

Wi-Fi is the wireless link between your device and a router. Internet access is a separate service: a home network typically relies on an internet service provider (ISP), a modem, and a wireless router. Some equipment combines modem and router functions, so check your ISP or equipment documentation to see what you have. A mesh Wi-Fi system can extend coverage, but it does not replace the ISP or modem; Google notes that its mesh system still requires both (Google’s mesh Wi-Fi requirements).

For a typical connection, turn on Wi-Fi in your phone, computer, or other device, choose the network name (also called its SSID), and enter the password. Exact labels and menus depend on the device. If the network is hidden, a device may offer an option to enter its name manually; for example, Google’s Nest Protect setup flow uses “Other network” (Nest Protect Wi-Fi setup). That label is specific to that flow, not a universal menu name.

How to set up home Wi-Fi

  1. Confirm the internet service works. Follow your ISP’s instructions for checking the modem and service before configuring the router. If the modem has no connection, changing Wi-Fi settings will not restore internet access.
  2. Connect and configure the router. Follow the router maker’s or ISP’s setup instructions. For mesh equipment, the manufacturer may require an app and compatible hardware. Google’s setup instructions illustrate the sequence for its own Wifi equipment; other products may differ (Google Wifi setup).
  3. Set a distinct network name and password. Choose a password that is difficult to guess and not reused for another account. Change the router’s administrator password as well; it controls router settings and is separate from the Wi-Fi password.
  4. Choose supported security. Use WPA3 Personal if both the router and devices support it, or WPA2 Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says older WPA and WEP security are outdated and not secure (FTC home Wi-Fi security guidance).

How to secure your home Wi-Fi network

Start with the router’s administrator interface or app, using the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact controls. The FTC recommends changing default administrator credentials and the Wi-Fi name and password, installing router software updates, and enabling the router’s built-in firewall. Log out of the administrator interface when finished. If the router offers neither WPA2 nor WPA3 after you have checked for updates, the FTC advises considering a replacement.

  • Turn off features you do not use. The FTC recommends disabling remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) when they are unnecessary. These options can be convenient, but may weaken security.
  • Use a guest network when useful. A guest network can give visitors internet access without sharing the main Wi-Fi password. Check your router’s documentation for what the guest network does and how to enable it.
  • Secure connected devices, too. Change default device passwords, enable two-factor authentication where available, turn on device security features, and review the router’s connected-device list. These steps are also recommended by the FTC (FTC guidance for connected devices at home).

The FTC describes WPA3 as “the newer — and best — encryption available,” while saying WPA2 will also scramble your information. Use the strongest option your router and devices can all support; security settings and labels vary by model.

Are public Wi-Fi networks safe?

Public Wi-Fi is usually safe for ordinary browsing because websites widely use encryption, according to the FTC (FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi). Look for HTTPS or a lock icon in the browser, keep your operating system, browser, and security software current, and confirm the hotspot’s name with the venue when practical. A lock icon indicates an encrypted connection to the website; it does not prove that the hotspot itself is the one you intended to join.

Shared networks can still be unsuitable for some devices or services. Google warns that its covered Nest products should not connect to unknown open networks and identifies captive-portal and enterprise networks as incompatible for those products. Those limits concern the Google products in its guidance, not all Wi-Fi devices (Google’s Nest network compatibility guidance).

  1. Wi-Fi is off on the device. Turn it on in the device’s network settings, then refresh the list of available networks.
  2. You are out of range. Move closer to the router and check whether the network name appears. Walls and the home layout can affect coverage.
  3. The network is hidden. If you know its exact name and password, use the device’s option to join or add a network manually. The wording varies; Google’s Nest Protect instructions, for example, use “Other network.”
  4. The device and router do not match. Check whether the device supports the router’s Wi-Fi band and security setting. Some Google Nest products described in Google’s guidance support only 2.4 GHz. That is a product-specific compatibility limit, not a general rule for every device.
  5. The router or device needs attention. Restart them or follow their manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps. Avoid resetting the router to factory settings unless its instructions call for it, since a reset may erase its configuration.

For a Nest Protect that cannot find a network, Google specifically advises moving closer to the router—but not immediately beside it—manually entering a hidden network, and ensuring that 2.4 GHz is enabled. These steps apply to that product’s setup process (Nest Protect setup instructions).

What to try when Wi-Fi is unreliable or coverage is weak

Separate Wi-Fi trouble from an internet outage

If devices connect to the Wi-Fi network but cannot reach websites, check whether the modem and ISP service are working. If only one device has trouble, inspect that device’s Wi-Fi settings and compatibility before changing router settings. If several devices lose the connection, follow your router and ISP instructions for restarting or diagnosing the equipment.

Consider mesh only if coverage is the problem

A mesh system uses multiple network points to extend Wi-Fi around a home. It is an optional coverage solution, not a requirement for internet access, and the available official information does not establish that mesh is always faster or better than a single router. Before choosing one, consider the area you need to cover, device compatibility—including supported bands and network authentication—and whether the system requires an app or specific hardware. Google’s mesh system, for example, still requires an ISP and modem (Google mesh system requirements).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use product-specific recovery steps before resetting

For Google Wifi points, the setup guidance suggests checking that each point is plugged in and on the same network, closing and reopening the app, restarting the Wifi device, or trying another phone or tablet. A reset is a later troubleshooting step, not the first one (Google Wifi setup and troubleshooting). Other routers and mesh systems may have different recovery procedures; use their instructions to avoid erasing settings unnecessarily.
