A concurrent-use license lets eligible users share a limited pool of software seats, with a firm cap on how many can use the software at the same time. The number of people or computers allowed to use it may be greater than the seat count, but installation rights and user eligibility depend on the specific license agreement.
What does “concurrent use” mean?
“Concurrent” means happening at the same time. Under this licensing model, the agreement sets a maximum number of simultaneous users, seats, or activations. Esri defines its Concurrent Use License as permission to install and use software on networked computers as long as simultaneous users do not exceed the licenses acquired. Rockwell Automation’s agreement instead ties its concurrent-use limit to the valid software activations listed in the order form. These are vendor-specific definitions, not universal wording.

In practice, a company might have more eligible employees or client computers than licensed seats. The key limit is how many people can use the software simultaneously, not necessarily how many people may be eligible or how many computers may have it installed. Check the agreement for the actual counting rule and any installation, organization, location, or activation restrictions.

In a common network or floating-license setup, a license server manages the purchased pool. When someone launches the application, it requests a seat from that server. If one is available, the user can proceed; when the seat is returned, another eligible user may use it. Matrix42 describes this checkout-and-return pattern, while Golden Software documents tools for activating licenses and viewing current or historical usage.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If every seat is occupied, another user may be unable to start or access the software until a seat becomes available or the organization acquires more entitlement. There is no single standard for whether the application displays an error, queues a request, releases an idle session, or permits offline borrowing; those behaviors depend on the product and its terms.
How is it different from named-user or single-user licensing?
A concurrent license generally shares seats from a pool; a named-user license generally assigns use to an identified person. Rockwell Automation distinguishes its named-use rights from concurrent use, which it limits by simultaneous access and order-form activations. Golden Software also contrasts an individual single-user license with its network-based concurrent model. These examples show common distinctions, but labels and rules vary by vendor.

| License question | Concurrent-use model | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| What is counted? | Simultaneous users, seats, or activations in the cited vendor examples. | Whether the agreement counts users, devices, sessions, activations, or another unit. |
| Can many computers have the software installed? | Some arrangements allow installation on multiple client computers while limiting simultaneous use. | Installation limits, permitted users, organization or site boundaries, and deployment rights. |
| What if all seats are in use? | The shared pool is full, so another user may not be able to obtain a seat. | Queueing, timeouts, idle-session handling, offline borrowing, and release behavior. |
| What infrastructure is needed? | A network license server is part of some arrangements. | Supported server platforms, network access, remote use, redundancy, and support requirements. |
What should you check before relying on a concurrent license?
- Counting rule: Confirm whether the cap is based on simultaneous people, devices, sessions, activations, or another measure.
- Eligible users and locations: Check who may draw from the pool and whether use is restricted to a company, site, or location.
- Installation and deployment: Confirm whether you may install the software on multiple computers and whether additional limits apply.
- Server and network requirements: Verify that eligible clients can reach the license server and review platform, remote-access, redundancy, and support requirements.
- Disconnects and offline use: Look for rules on idle sessions, network loss, borrowing or checkout, and when a seat is released.
- Recovery rights: Check whether failover or disaster-recovery instances are permitted. Esri’s agreement, for example, expressly allows passive failover instances of its Concurrent Use License management software in a separate operating-system environment for temporary support; that provision is specific to Esri.
The governing agreement and order form determine the actual rights. For example, Esri describes its limit by licenses acquired, while Rockwell Automation specifies valid activations in the order form. Do not assume that one vendor’s installation, server, or failover terms apply to another.
