How to Connect to a VPS with SSH from Your Browser

A provider browser console is the simplest option for many VPS users. If one is unavailable, Cloudflare can render SSH in a browser through Tunnel and Access, with specific hostname, policy, and server requirements.

First check whether your VPS provider has a browser console: it is usually the quickest way to open a server terminal. If it does not, Cloudflare Tunnel and Access can provide a browser-rendered SSH session, provided your VPS has SSH enabled and a tunnel connector can reach it. A browser terminal does not bypass the server’s SSH requirements or access controls.

Choose the right browser connection

Option Best for Important constraints
VPS provider’s browser console Routine access when the control panel includes one. Availability, account permissions, and network or server requirements vary by provider. Some consoles connect over the network like an SSH client.
Cloudflare browser-rendered SSH Browser access to an SSH server reachable through a Cloudflare Tunnel. Requires a Cloudflare domain, tunnel connector, public hostname, Access policy, reachable SSH service, and compatible SSH key exchange.
Recovery or serial console Fixing a server when its network or SSH service is unavailable. Provider and instance support vary; it may be more limited than a normal terminal.

For example, DigitalOcean’s Droplet Console is a browser terminal that connects over the network like an SSH-based client, and it is not available for Private Droplets. Its Recovery Console is a separate, older VNC-based recovery option for network or SSH failures; DigitalOcean says to use it for recovery rather than routine access when the normal console works. See DigitalOcean’s Recovery Console guidance. AWS also documents browser-based EC2 Instance Connect, but its IAM, endpoint, instance-software, IP, and security-group prerequisites are specific to AWS rather than universal VPS steps: AWS EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint.

Connect with your provider’s browser console

  1. Sign in to your VPS provider’s control panel and open the page for the relevant VPS or instance.
  2. Look for its console or browser terminal option. The name and location vary by provider; select the ordinary network console for routine access, not a recovery console unless you are troubleshooting a broken network or SSH service.
  3. Open the session and authenticate using the credentials or access method requested by that provider. Provider-specific permissions and server prerequisites still apply.

If the provider does not offer a suitable browser console, or you want to configure browser-rendered SSH independently, Cloudflare documents the following route.

Set up Cloudflare browser-rendered SSH

This is a Cloudflare-specific setup, not a generic browser terminal. It requires an SSH-enabled VPS, a reachable tunnel connector, a hostname on a domain in your Cloudflare account, and an Access policy. Cloudflare describes its browser terminal as allowing users to connect to an SSH server without managing SSH keys or installing the Cloudflare One Client. Read the Cloudflare browser SSH setup, browser-rendered terminal documentation, and Clientless SSH prerequisites alongside these steps.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Confirm SSH works on the VPS. Note the address reachable from the machine that will run the connector and the SSH port. Port 22 is common, but use the port configured on your server if it differs. Cloudflare Access does not enable SSH or grant server authorization by itself.
  2. Install and run cloudflared. Run the Cloudflare Tunnel connector on the VPS or on another machine that can reach the VPS’s SSH service. If it runs on the VPS, the service target is commonly localhost:22. If it runs elsewhere, target the VPS’s reachable address and SSH port, such as <server IP>:22. A connector on another machine must be able to reach that actual host and port. Cloudflare’s clientless guide describes an outbound tunnel connection that does not require firewall changes for the tunnel connection.
  3. Add a published application route in Cloudflare Tunnel. In the Cloudflare dashboard, add a published application route using a hostname on a domain in your Cloudflare account. Select SSH and set the service to the connector-reachable SSH target, for example localhost:22 or the reachable server address and port.
  4. Configure a self-hosted Access application and policy. Create or configure the Access application for the hostname and add an Allow policy for the people who should be able to connect. Browser-rendered applications support Allow or Block policies; Bypass and Service Auth are not supported for this feature. Cloudflare’s setup describes authentication using an email one-time PIN or an identity provider.
  5. Enable browser rendering for SSH. In the Access application configuration, enable “Allow access through browser-based RDP, SSH, or VNC sessions” and select SSH. Configure this for a domain or subdomain, not a URL path.
  6. Open the hostname and authenticate. Visit the application hostname in a browser, complete the Access sign-in, and use the rendered terminal session.

Cloudflare browser rendering supports self-hosted public applications, not private IP addresses or private hostnames. The hostname is the access URL; the Tunnel connector supplies the route from Cloudflare to the SSH service. Dashboard navigation may change, so rely on the current labels and Cloudflare’s current instructions rather than assuming a fixed menu path.

Troubleshoot a browser SSH session

  • The hostname does not open a terminal: check that the published route uses the intended hostname, that browser rendering is enabled for SSH, and that the hostname is configured on the domain or subdomain rather than as a URL path.
  • Access denies sign-in: verify the user matches an Allow policy for the Access application. Bypass and Service Auth policies are not supported for browser-rendered sessions.
  • The tunnel connects but SSH is unreachable: confirm SSH is enabled, the configured port is correct, and the connector machine can reach the VPS at the target address and port. Use localhost only when the connector runs on the VPS itself or when that address otherwise resolves to the intended SSH service.
  • The server uses a private IP or hostname: Cloudflare browser rendering does not support private IPs or hostnames as the application. The route still needs a supported public hostname, with the tunnel providing connectivity to the SSH service.
  • Key-exchange negotiation fails: Cloudflare lists these supported SSH key-exchange algorithms: [email protected], curve25519-sha256, ecdh-sha2-nistp256, ecdh-sha2-nistp384, and ecdh-sha2-nistp521. Check the server’s sshd_config for compatible KEX settings before making changes; do not weaken SSH settings without understanding the security impact.
  • The VPS is down or SSH itself is broken: a browser-rendered SSH session cannot repair an unavailable SSH service. Use the provider’s recovery or serial console if available. For DigitalOcean, the Recovery Console is intended for network-access problems and booting into the recovery ISO.

For a different task—keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream live around the clock—StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. It does not provide VPS access or browser SSH.
