To join a Rust server by address, start Rust, press F1, select the CONSOLE tab, and enter client.connect 57.128.211.192:28015. Replace the example with the server’s IP and game port, then press Enter. Do not put spaces around the colon. If the server is password protected, enter the password when prompted or use client.connect [IP]:[Port]; password [YourPassword].

What you need before connecting
Direct connection requires three pieces of information from the server owner or host panel:

- The server’s IP address.
- The server’s game port, which is the port used by the Rust client for a direct join.
- The server password, if one is required.
Get the complete address from the owner, the hosting control panel, or the server’s listing. Do not assume that a query, RCON, or other administrative port is the playable game port. A host may display several ports on the same connection card.
Make sure Rust is updated and that Steam can connect normally before troubleshooting the server address. The client and server must be compatible versions, and your network must allow Steam and Rust traffic.

Connect with the Rust F1 console
1. Open the console
- Launch Rust.
- Press F1. The key works from the main menu as well as in-game.
- Confirm that the CONSOLE tab is selected. A command entered on another tab is not sent and may produce no error.
2. Enter the address
Type the command in this form, with no spaces around the colon:
client.connect IP:port
For example:
client.connect 57.128.211.192:28015
Replace 57.128.211.192 with the server IP and 28015 with the game port supplied by the host. Press Enter once the complete command is visible.
3. Wait for the connection result
Rust should begin connecting to the specified address. Allow the loading process to finish before deciding that the attempt failed. If an error appears, read its exact wording; it determines whether the problem is the address, the server, Steam, or your local network.
Joining a password-protected server
Use the password prompt
Some servers ask for a password after the connection begins. Enter it in the prompt exactly as supplied by the owner, including capitalization if the owner says it matters.
Send the password with the command
You can append the password to the connection command:
client.connect [IP]:[Port]; password [YourPassword]
Replace every bracketed value with the real address, port, and password. Keep the semicolon between the connection command and the password command. If this syntax does not work on your server, connect with the address alone and use the prompt instead.
Which port should you use?
Port confusion is the most common reason a correct-looking address fails. Rust hosts commonly expose at least a game port and a query port, and those ports serve different purposes.
| Port | Purpose | Use for direct F1 connection? |
|---|---|---|
| Game port | Player traffic and the Rust client connection | Yes. Use this port with client.connect. |
| Query port | Server discovery by Steam’s master-server and browser systems | No for the normal direct join; it controls whether the server appears in lists. |
| RCON port | Remote administration and other management tools | No. It is not the player connection port. |
Hosting guides commonly show 28015/UDP as the game-port default. Treat that as a common setup, not a guarantee: the owner may have changed it. Use the game port printed by the host rather than substituting a familiar number.
Why a server can be missing from the browser but still reachable
Steam discovers servers through the query port. If that port is blocked, misconfigured, or forwarded incorrectly, a server can disappear from the Community list while still accepting a direct connection on its game port. In that situation, an F1 connection using the correct game port is the appropriate test.

Conflicting query-port defaults
Published hosting documentation does not agree on one universal query-port default. One set of instructions, citing the Facepunch wiki, describes the query port as the higher of the game or RCON port plus one, which commonly produces 28017/UDP. Other guides list 27015/UDP or an offset of four. These differences can reflect server configuration, guide age, or different hosting conventions.
For a particular server, the startup output or hosting control panel is authoritative. Do not derive the query port from a generic table when the host supplies an explicit value. If a listing appears to show several possible ports, ask the owner which one is the game port for client.connect. When labels are unclear, confirm the address with the host rather than randomly changing ports.
Direct IP join versus other ways to enter
All three methods can lead to the same server, but they depend on different information and network services.
| Join method | Port or information required | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
F1 console with client.connect |
Server IP and game port | The server’s game port must accept traffic; Steam discovery is not required. |
| Steam favourites or server browser | Query-port visibility and the server listing | Steam’s discovery service must reach the query port; a blocked query port can hide an otherwise working server. |
| Host-provided one-click link | The address encoded by the host | The link must contain the current IP and game port, and the server must still be online. |
Use the F1 method when you have a reliable IP and game port but the server does not appear in Steam’s list. Use the browser when discovery is working and you want to find servers without copying an address.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to find a server’s IP address
Ask the owner or check the host panel
The most reliable source is the server owner, administrator, hosting control panel, or the listing where the server is advertised. Copy the IP and port exactly, including every digit and the colon separator.
Read the address after you have joined
If you are already connected, press F1 and look shortly after joining for a line beginning Connecting: IP:port. Several Rust hosting guides describe this as a way to read the active address. Client behavior can vary by version, so treat the host’s published address as the final authority when the console line is absent or unclear.

Troubleshooting a failed connection
F1 does nothing
Rust may not have the console enabled. In Steam, open your Library, right-click Rust, choose Properties, stay on General, and add -console to Launch Options. Close the properties window, restart Rust, and press F1 again. If the console still does not appear, remove unrelated launch options temporarily and verify that the game actually restarted after saving the setting.
The command produces no response
Look at the tab label first. The command must be entered while CONSOLE is active; text entered elsewhere is not submitted to the console and may show no error. Click the console input area, retype the command, and press Enter.
The address is rejected immediately
- Check that the IP contains the same digits the owner supplied.
- Check that there is exactly one colon between the IP and port.
- Remove spaces around the colon.
- Confirm that you used the game port, not the query or RCON port.
- Ask whether the server’s public IP or port changed after a restart or host migration.
Do not add a protocol prefix or a website name. The command expects the server address in IP:port form.
The server is offline
Confirm the server is running with the owner or control panel. A powered-off, restarting, or maintenance server cannot accept a client even when the address is correctly typed. If other players also cannot connect, the issue is likely server-side rather than a setting on your PC.
The server is visible in the browser but direct connection fails
Visibility proves that Steam can query the listing, not that you entered the correct game port. Compare the direct-connection address with the host’s connection card and use the listed game port. A listing can also be stale after an address change, so obtain a fresh address from the owner.
The server is not visible, but you have an address
Try the F1 console with the supplied game port. Browser visibility relies on the query port, while direct joining relies on the game port. A blocked or mis-forwarded query port can therefore hide a server that still accepts direct players.

You used a query or RCON port by mistake
Return to the host’s port list and identify the entry labeled game, server, or connection. The query port is for discovery and the RCON port is for administration. Neither should replace the game port in the normal player command.
A password prompt loops or rejects the password
Re-enter the password exactly as supplied. Ask the owner to confirm that the password has not changed and that your account is allowed to join. If the inline syntax was used, try connecting without it and enter the password at the prompt; this separates a command-format problem from an authentication problem.
The game reports a version or protocol problem
Update Rust through Steam and restart the client. Ask the owner to confirm that the server has completed its own update and is running the expected version. A client and server on different versions may fail even when the IP and port are correct.
Steam cannot be reached
Check Steam’s status on your computer, sign in again if necessary, and restart Steam before retrying Rust. Direct IP entry still relies on Steam being available for the game session, so a Steam connectivity problem can prevent an otherwise valid address from working.

A firewall or antivirus blocks the attempt
Temporarily inspect your security software’s blocked-application or network-event list for Rust and Steam. Allow the legitimate game processes and the required network traffic according to your security policy, then retry. Do not permanently disable protection simply to test a server; restore your normal protection after diagnosing the rule.
What server owners must configure
A player cannot fix a missing port-forwarding rule from the Rust client. The owner or host must expose and forward the game port and query port as UDP according to the server’s configuration.
- Open the game port used by players.
- Open the query port used for Steam discovery.
- Forward both ports to the machine running the Rust server.
- Verify the public IP and ports shown to players after every configuration or hosting change.
Because guides disagree about query-port defaults, the owner’s startup output or control panel should determine the actual values. Some administrators explicitly set the game port with a startup option such as +server.port 28015 and the query port with +server.queryport 28017; those numbers apply only when the owner has configured them that way.
A quick decision checklist
- Have the complete address? Obtain the public IP and the host-labeled game port.
- Is the console available? Press F1; if it is missing, add
-consolein Steam’s Rust launch options and restart. - Is the right tab selected? Use the CONSOLE tab before entering any command.
- Is the syntax exact? Use
client.connect IP:portwith no spaces around the colon. - Is a password required? Use the prompt or the documented semicolon-and-password form.
- Does the server appear offline? Confirm its status with the owner rather than repeatedly retrying.
- Does the error mention a version, Steam, or blocking rule? Update Rust, verify Steam, and inspect firewall or antivirus events.
Important limitations and changing details
The client.connect command and F1 workflow are documented consistently in current hosting instructions, but default port numbers, query-port formulas, and console behavior can vary by server setup and game version. No single generic query-port value should override the address supplied by the server owner.
