How to connect switches and third-party accessories to the PS5 Access controller

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the PS5 Access controller to your console with the included USB cable, complete the pairing steps with the PS button on the stick base, then plug compatible accessibility hardware into one of the four 3.5mm expansion ports labeled E1, E2, E3 and E4. After the accessory is inserted, assign its input in the Access controller profile settings on the PS5.

The USB socket is reserved for the PS5 connection, charging and controller-software updates. It is not a USB hub, so USB adaptive switches and other USB accessories cannot be used through it. The expansion ports accept compatible button, trigger and stick devices, but they do not power peripherals that require an external supply.

What you need before connecting an accessory

  • A PlayStation 5 console with system software up to date.
  • The PS5 Access controller and its included USB cable.
  • A DualSense wireless controller paired with the PS5 for the first-time Access setup.
  • A compatible accessibility device with the correct 3.5mm plug and electrical characteristics.
  • Enough time to test the physical position and mapping before playing a game.

The Access controller works only with PlayStation 5 consoles. It pairs with one PS5 at a time, so moving it to another console requires pairing it again there. Device-software updates are delivered through PS5 console system-software updates rather than through a separate computer application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect and pair the Access controller first

  1. Turn on the PS5. Finish the console’s initial setup before attempting to configure the Access controller.
  2. Connect the Access controller to the PS5. Use the included USB cable. This wired connection handles the initial pairing and charges the controller.
  3. Press the PS button on the stick base. The base is the central unit of the Access controller; pressing its PS button starts the console pairing flow.
  4. Select a user. Choose the PS5 user account that will use the controller.
  5. Follow the on-screen setup instructions. Complete the initial configuration using the base profile. The paired DualSense controller can be used to navigate if needed.
  6. Wait for pairing and charging to finish. Keep the USB cable connected until the console confirms the setup.
  7. Disconnect the USB cable if you want wireless operation. The Access controller can then be used wirelessly with the PS5 it is paired to.

Do not plug an external switch into the controller before this first pairing is complete. Establishing the PS5 connection first makes it easier to tell whether a later problem is caused by the console connection, the accessory, or the profile mapping.

Where each accessory plugs in

Looking at the expansion-port row from left to right, the sockets are labeled E1, E2, E3 and E4. Insert the accessory’s 3.5mm plug fully into any available port. The port number does not inherently determine the game command; it identifies the physical input that you will map in a profile.

Port Location in the row Typical use
E1 Far left Any compatible button, trigger or stick device
E2 Second from left Any compatible button, trigger or stick device
E3 Third from left Any compatible button, trigger or stick device
E4 Far right Any compatible button, trigger or stick device

Because the ports are functionally configurable, choose the socket that makes the cable route and physical placement easiest. A player may put a frequently used switch in E1, for example, but the eventual action comes from the profile assignment rather than from the E1 label itself.

What the 3.5mm expansion ports support

PlayStation describes the expansion ports as compatible with third-party buttons, switches and other devices designed for a 3.5mm connection. Sony’s technical specification divides those devices into three classes. Their connector contacts and signal behavior are different, so a plug that physically fits is not automatically compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Device class Input behavior Expected plug Examples of use
Button device Digital on/off input Two-contact 3.5mm plug Large external button, hand switch or foot switch
Trigger device One-axis analog input Four-contact 3.5mm plug Variable-pressure or variable-travel trigger control
Stick device Two-axis analog input Four-contact 3.5mm plug External joystick or two-axis control

Use the accessory maker’s compatibility information for the exact model. Sony explicitly warns that not every commercial device works with the Access controller, even when it has a 3.5mm plug.

Button devices

A button device sends a simple open or closed signal. It is the most straightforward option for a large surface switch, a low-force switch, a hand pad or a foot-operated button. The switch must use the expected two-contact arrangement and electrical behavior; a stereo or four-contact cable with a different wiring scheme can fail even though it fits the socket.

Trigger devices

A trigger device provides one analog axis rather than a single on/off event. The game can therefore receive a range of positions, such as partial to full acceleration or brake input. Trigger accessories need the four-contact arrangement and the analog characteristics specified for the Access controller.

Stick devices

A stick device provides two analog axes, allowing movement in two dimensions. This can help a player who cannot comfortably operate the built-in control layout, but the accessory must be designed for the Access controller’s analog input expectations rather than merely being any generic joystick with a 3.5mm output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electrical requirements and the power limitation

The technical specification is most useful to accessory builders and manufacturers. Ordinary buyers should treat it as a compatibility check, not as a guarantee that an untested product will work.

The expansion ports do not support peripherals that need a power supply. A device that expects the controller to provide operating power, or that requires a powered hub, is outside the stated port design. Check whether the accessory has its own approved power arrangement and whether its maker specifically lists PS5 Access controller compatibility; do not assume the controller can supply it.

Configure the connected device in an Access profile

  1. Plug the accessory into E1, E2, E3 or E4. Push the connector all the way in so the contacts seat correctly.
  2. Open the Access controller profile settings on the PS5. Use the console’s on-screen Access-controller configuration interface.
  3. Select the expansion input you used. Choose the corresponding E-port so the console knows which physical socket you are editing.
  4. Assign the desired command. Map the button, trigger axis or stick axes to the game action the player needs.
  5. Save or apply the profile. Keep the mapping in a profile that can be selected before launching a game.
  6. Test in a safe menu or practice area. Confirm that a button registers once, an analog trigger reaches its full range and a stick moves in both axes as expected.

A profile assignment changes the command generated by the input; it does not change the accessory’s physical signal type. A two-contact digital switch cannot become an analog trigger through software, and a one-axis trigger cannot provide two-axis stick movement.

Choosing an accessory that will work for the player

Compatibility is only the first filter. A device can meet the connector requirements and still be a poor fit if it takes too much force, has excessive travel, is difficult to mount or sits outside the player’s comfortable range of motion.

  • Match the signal type. Select a button for a digital action, a trigger for one analog axis or a stick for two analog axes.
  • Confirm the contact count. Button devices generally use two contacts; trigger and stick devices generally use four.
  • Check power needs. Avoid devices that require power from the expansion port.
  • Measure force and travel. A light, short-travel switch may be better for limited strength, while a firmer switch can reduce accidental presses for another player.
  • Plan the mounting position. Consider hand, arm, head, knee or foot operation, cable strain and whether the device stays stable during play.
  • Verify the mapping range. Make sure the Access profile can assign the input to the command the player actually needs.
  • Read the exact model’s compatibility guidance. A manufacturer’s statement for one switch does not automatically cover a visually similar model.

Related adaptive hardware

Sony’s Access controller product information lists the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit for Access controller as a related product. Availability and exact compatibility can vary by country and date, so verify the current listing and the specific kit contents before buying. Other vendors offer individual 3.5mm buttons, switches, triggers and sticks; apply the same connector, signal, power and ergonomics checks to each model.

USB accessories: what is and is not possible

The USB socket has three stated purposes: connecting the Access controller to the PS5, charging it and updating its device software. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “The USB port is used to connect the controller to your PS5® console to charge and update the device software. It does not support USB-based third-party accessories.”

That means a USB adaptive switch, USB foot pedal, USB joystick or USB hub cannot be connected directly to the Access controller as an expansion input. A USB device may have its own compatibility with the PS5 through another officially supported method, but it is not an accessory input for the Access controller’s USB port. For an accessory controlled through the Access controller, use a compatible 3.5mm expansion device instead.

Using more than one controller

The PS5 can use up to two Access controllers together. It can also combine one or two Access controllers with a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller. This allows a player and a helper to share control inputs, or lets different physical layouts cover different actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The console supports up to 30 individual control profiles. Three profiles can be stored on the Access controller for quick switching. Keep a profile for each game or seating arrangement, and name or organize them clearly enough that the correct mapping can be selected before play. A profile cannot make an incompatible accessory work; it only assigns commands to inputs the hardware and console can recognize.

Features the Access controller does not provide

When planning an accessibility setup, account for the functions the Access controller does not support. The controller supports the touch-pad button, but not the touch pad’s touch surface. It also does not support vibration, adaptive triggers, motion sensing, the built-in speaker, microphone, mute button or headset audio. These omissions matter if a game requires one of those features or if the player expects an external device to replace them.

For example, mapping an external button to the touch-pad button does not create touch-surface gestures. Likewise, connecting an analog stick does not add motion-sensor input, and plugging a switch into an expansion port does not provide headset-audio control.

Troubleshooting connection and mapping problems

The Access controller does not pair

  • Confirm the PS5 is turned on and that the included USB cable is connected securely at both ends.
  • Press the PS button on the stick base, then select the intended user.
  • Complete the on-screen base-profile setup instead of attempting to configure an expansion accessory first.
  • Remember that the controller pairs with one PS5 at a time; if it was last paired elsewhere, repeat the pairing process on this console.
  • Use the DualSense controller that was paired during the PS5’s first-time setup if navigation is difficult.

The console does not detect a switch

  • Remove and fully reinsert the 3.5mm plug.
  • Try another expansion port to distinguish a seating issue from an accessory issue.
  • Confirm that the device is a compatible digital button rather than a USB-only switch or a powered peripheral.
  • Check that the plug has the contact arrangement specified for the device class.
  • Open the profile settings and select the E-port manually before assigning the command.

An analog trigger or stick behaves incorrectly

  • Verify that the accessory is the correct one-axis trigger or two-axis stick type.
  • Confirm the maker specifies a four-contact 3.5mm plug and Access-controller compatibility.
  • Check that the analog design falls within the stated 10k ± 3k ohm potentiometer resistance and 1.8 V maximum input expectations.
  • Test the full physical range slowly. A stuck value, missing axis or permanently active input usually indicates a wiring, connector or device-compatibility problem rather than a profile-command problem.

The input works but triggers the wrong action

  • Return to the Access controller profile settings.
  • Select the exact E-port in which the accessory is plugged.
  • Replace the current command with the required button, trigger or stick assignment.
  • Save the profile and test it outside a live match or difficult game section.

A USB accessory does nothing

This is expected when it is connected to the Access controller’s USB socket. That port does not accept USB third-party accessories. Use a compatible 3.5mm device in E1 through E4 instead, or follow the accessory maker’s separate instructions for any independent PS5 compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical compatibility checklist

  1. Is the accessory intended for a PS5 Access controller, not merely described as a generic 3.5mm device?
  2. Is it a button, one-axis trigger or two-axis stick?
  3. Does it use the appropriate two-contact or four-contact plug?
  4. Does it avoid drawing required operating power from the expansion port?
  5. Does its force, travel, size and mounting suit the player?
  6. Can its input be assigned to the needed command in an Access profile?
  7. Can the player reach the plug and cable safely without pulling the controller?
  8. Has the exact model been tested in the intended profile before purchase or installation?

Key limits to remember

  • The Access controller is compatible only with PS5 consoles.
  • Its USB port is for PS5 connection, charging and software updates, not third-party USB accessories.
  • External accessibility devices connect through the four 3.5mm ports labeled E1 to E4.
  • Button, trigger and stick devices have different signal and connector requirements.
  • Expansion ports do not support peripherals that require a power supply.
  • Not every commercial 3.5mm device is compatible, so check the exact model before buying.
  • The controller supports up to two Access controllers together, or one or two Access controllers with a DualSense or DualSense Edge.
  • The PS5 can store up to 30 control profiles, with three profiles stored on the Access controller for quick switching.
