How to Connect Bluehost AI Credits to gstack

Set up Bluehost AI Credits for gstack by configuring the gstack user’s shell and restarting Claude Code. Confirm the gateway supports Claude Code’s required Anthropic Messages API route before production use.

To use Bluehost AI Credits with gstack, configure the Anthropic-related environment variables in the shell profile of the Linux gstack user, then start a new Claude Code session. Bluehost documents this setup for gstack on a Self-Managed VPS or VDS accessed over SSH. There is an important compatibility caveat: Bluehost’s gstack guide says to confirm that its gateway supports Claude Code’s required Anthropic Messages API route, /v1/messages, before relying on the configuration in production.

Before you start

Bluehost’s instructions assume you already have gstack installed on a Bluehost Self-Managed VPS or VDS and can connect over SSH as root. You also need an active Bluehost account with AI Credits available and an API key for the credits gateway. Bluehost says AI Credits are available on Self-Managed VPS and VDS plans. See Bluehost’s AI Credits overview for service details.

If you still need credits, Bluehost’s purchase guide says a balance is required before you can create an API key. Credits are non-refundable, and the balance’s expiration date is shown in the Bluehost Portal. Check those account details before configuring the server: How to Purchase Bluehost AI Credits.

Configure the gstack user’s shell

  1. Connect to the server over SSH as root.

  2. Switch to the gstack system user with machinectl shell gstack@.

  3. Edit that user’s ~/.bashrc and add the gateway URL and your API key:

    export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com"
    export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="your_ai_credits_key"

Replace your_ai_credits_key with your actual key. Do not put a real key in screenshots, shared documentation, or files other people can access.

  4. Reload the profile in the current shell:

    source ~/.bashrc
  5. Change to your project directory and launch Claude Code with claude.

Bluehost’s guide also notes that Claude Code may require ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to be set, and suggests using a placeholder when the gateway authenticates with ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. Treat this as Bluehost-specific guidance, not a universal Claude Code requirement: check current Claude Code and gateway behavior before adding another credential variable.

Check gateway compatibility before production use

Environment variables tell Claude Code where to send requests and which token to use; they do not establish that the endpoint speaks the protocol Claude Code needs. Bluehost’s general AI Credits overview describes its gateway as OpenAI-compatible, while its gstack-specific connection guide warns that Claude Code expects an Anthropic Messages API implementation at /v1/messages. The gstack guide recommends confirming that route’s support with Bluehost documentation or support before using this setup in production. The configuration is documented, but the sources do not establish that the gateway currently serves the required Claude Code protocol.

Bluehost’s connection instructions are in How to Connect Bluehost AI Credits to gstack; its general description of the gateway is on the Bluehost AI Gateway overview.

Verify the setup and gstack skills

Bluehost recommends a basic check after launching Claude Code: send a simple prompt, then enter /gstack and confirm that the skills are available. This is the vendor’s suggested verification procedure; success with a simple prompt does not, by itself, establish compatibility for every model or task.

Update an existing installation or rotate a key

For an existing installation, edit the environment variables in the gstack user’s ~/.bashrc, reload the file with source ~/.bashrc, and launch a new Claude Code session. If rotating a key, replace the value of ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN before reloading and restarting. An already-running Claude Code session retains the environment it had when launched, so changing the profile alone does not update that session.

Troubleshoot common failures

Bluehost lists these as possible causes in its guide; they are troubleshooting hypotheses, not guaranteed diagnoses.

What Bluehost AI Credits cost—and what the figure means

Bluehost’s AI Credits overview, updated September 16, 2026, states that one credit has a fixed retail value of $0.010. That is the stated value of a credit, not the cost of a particular prompt, model, or gstack task; the overview does not establish request-level pricing. Check your account balance and expiration date in the Bluehost Portal before relying on credits for ongoing use.
