Which controllers work with Apple TV 4K?
Apple’s compatibility list includes the following categories:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Controller | What Apple lists | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sony PlayStation DualShock 4 | Supported | Use a controller that can communicate over Bluetooth and follow Sony’s pairing procedure. |
| Sony PlayStation DualSense | Supported | Follow the model’s pairing instructions; Apple does not publish a separate latency or battery rating for Apple TV use. |
| Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth | Supported | Not every Xbox Wireless Controller revision necessarily has Bluetooth, so verify the exact model before buying or troubleshooting. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Supported | Apple lists the Series 2 specifically; check that the controller is in Bluetooth pairing mode. |
| Xbox Adaptive Controllers | Supported | The Adaptive Controller is an accessibility-oriented option; Apple’s setup guide does not rank accessibility configurations or attached switches. |
| MFi-compatible game controllers | Supported | Compatibility depends on the controller’s MFi certification and Bluetooth implementation. |
These are the models and categories named in Apple’s Apple TV controller guide. A controller that looks similar to a supported model may still behave differently if it uses a different wireless standard or lacks Bluetooth. When shopping, confirm the exact Bluetooth-capable model and its availability in your region. Apple’s documentation does not provide a universal list of every third-party MFi controller.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before you start
Have the following ready:
- An Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD with the Siri Remote available for navigation.
- A compatible controller with enough power to turn on and remain discoverable.
- The controller maker’s instructions for entering Bluetooth pairing mode. The required button combination is not identical across DualShock, DualSense, Xbox, Elite, Adaptive, and MFi controllers.
- A clear Bluetooth environment. If many Bluetooth devices are connected, temporarily disconnecting some can make discovery easier.
Do not connect the controller to another nearby device while trying to pair it with Apple TV. A controller that immediately reconnects to a console, computer, phone, or tablet may stop advertising itself to Apple TV.

Connect the controller from Control Center
- Enable pairing mode on the controller. Turn it on, then use the controller manufacturer’s instructions to make its Bluetooth indicator or status show that it is discoverable. Apple specifically directs users to follow the maker’s instructions for this step.
- Open Control Center on Apple TV. Hold the TV button on the Siri Remote.
- Choose Game Controllers. Control Center displays the game-controller management option.
- Select the controller. Choose the controller’s name from the list of available devices. Wait for Apple TV to complete the connection before pressing buttons in a game.
Apple describes this Control Center workflow in its Bluetooth game-controller instructions. If the controller does not appear, leave pairing mode and enter it again rather than repeatedly selecting an absent entry.
Connect or manage it in Settings
The full Bluetooth menu is useful when you need to inspect an existing connection, disconnect a controller, forget it, or try a clean pairing:
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Go to Remotes and Devices.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into discoverable mode using its manufacturer instructions.
- Select the controller when it appears in the device list.
The same menu lets you select a paired controller and manage what Apple TV does with it. Use Control Center for a quick connection during a gaming session; use Settings when you are diagnosing a pairing problem or cleaning up old entries.
Check the connection and customize controls
Once paired, select the controller from either Control Center > Game Controllers or Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. Apple provides several controls for identifying and tailoring a paired device.
Identify a controller
If several similar controllers are nearby, use the identification option in the controller’s management screen. Apple TV can use a vibration pattern to help you determine which physical controller corresponds to the selected name. This is especially useful when two people have identical gamepads.
Create a custom profile
Choose the option to create a custom profile for the selected controller. A profile stores control changes for that controller instead of forcing you to reconfigure buttons every time you play.
Remap buttons and controls
Use the customization controls to assign functions to buttons or other available inputs. The exact controls available depend on the connected controller. Remapping can make a familiar layout easier to use or accommodate a player who needs a different physical arrangement.

Assign a profile to a specific game
Under Customized Apps, assign a controller profile to an individual game. This lets one title use a specialized layout while other games retain the controller’s general configuration.
Undo changes or remove a profile
- Choose Reset to Defaults to remove custom control changes and return the selected controller to its default mapping.
- Choose Delete This Profile to remove a saved custom profile.
These customization, identification, and profile controls are described in Apple’s game-controller guide. Apple does not publish independent measurements showing that one supported controller has lower latency, longer battery life, or better value than another.
Use two controllers as one player with Buddy Controller
Buddy Controller combines two compatible controllers so they operate as the controls for one player. It is useful when two people are sharing control of a game or when one person wants to supplement a primary controller with another input device.
- Pair both controllers with Apple TV.
- Select the controller that should be the primary controller.
- Choose Buddy Controller.
- Select the second controller as the secondary controller.
Only one controller can be primary at a time. The controllers remain separate physical devices, but Apple TV presents their inputs as one player’s controls while Buddy Controller is active. To change who leads, return to the Buddy Controller settings and choose the other paired device as primary.
How many controllers can Apple TV use?
Apple states that Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to four Bluetooth game controllers at the same time. There is an important exception: when Apple TV is also using a Bluetooth audio accessory, Apple states that only one controller is supported at that time. This is an Apple-published capacity limit, not a guarantee that every game accepts four simultaneous players. A particular game can impose its own player-count or controller requirements.

If you need several controllers, pair them one at a time and verify each name in the Bluetooth list. Keep the audio-accessory limitation in mind before troubleshooting a fourth controller that will not connect. The capacity statement appears in Apple’s support article on connecting Bluetooth accessories to Apple TV.
Disconnect a controller or remove its pairing
Apple provides two different actions, and they have different results:
Disconnect Device
Choose Disconnect Device when you want to stop using the controller temporarily but keep its pairing information on Apple TV. This is the appropriate choice when you expect to use the same controller again later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesForget This Device
Choose Forget This Device when you want Apple TV to remove the pairing. Use this before handing the controller to another household member, replacing it, or starting over after a failed pairing attempt. After forgetting it, you must put the controller back into pairing mode and select it again to use it with Apple TV.

The controller is not listed
- Confirm that the controller is actually in Bluetooth pairing or discoverable mode, not merely powered on. Re-enter pairing mode using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Move the controller close enough to Apple TV for the initial discovery and keep other wireless devices from crowding the setup.
- Temporarily reduce the number of connected Bluetooth devices. Apple recommends reducing connected devices when pairing fails because other connections can interfere with discovery or consume the available controller capacity.
- Open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and check the list there instead of relying only on the Control Center view.
The controller appears but will not complete pairing
- Cancel the attempt and put the controller back into pairing mode.
- If Apple TV already shows an old entry for that controller, select it and choose Forget This Device.
- Start the pairing process again from the Bluetooth settings screen.
- Check that the controller is one of Apple’s supported categories and that the exact model includes Bluetooth. For Xbox Wireless Controllers, the words “with Bluetooth” matter; an otherwise similar model may use a different connection method.
The controller worked before but no longer reconnects
Select the existing controller in Bluetooth settings and try Disconnect Device, then put it into pairing mode and connect again. If that does not work, use Forget This Device and perform a fresh pairing. This removes stale pairing information rather than creating another duplicate entry.
A fourth controller will not connect
Check whether Apple TV is connected to a Bluetooth audio accessory. Apple’s stated limit drops to one Bluetooth game controller while Bluetooth audio is in use. Disconnect the audio accessory before testing multiple controllers again.
Buttons behave differently from the labels
Open the connected controller’s customization screen and inspect its mapping. Create a custom profile, remap the controls, and assign the profile under Customized Apps if the change should apply only to one game. Use Reset to Defaults if the remapping created an unexpected layout.

How to choose among supported controllers
Apple confirms compatibility, but its setup documentation does not publish a comparative test of latency, battery endurance, price, or overall value. Use the following decision factors instead of assuming that a supported controller is automatically best for every player.
| Decision factor | What to check | What Apple’s documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Exact model, Bluetooth support, and MFi status where applicable. | Apple names DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controllers, and MFi-compatible controllers. |
| Pairing and reconnection | Whether you can reliably enter the model’s discoverable mode and whether it reconnects to another nearby device first. | Apple provides the Apple TV pairing path but does not publish a model-by-model reconnection ranking. |
| Button layout and ergonomics | Choose the stick, trigger, D-pad, and face-button arrangement that feels familiar to the player. | Apple does not rate comfort, reach, weight, or layout preference. |
| Number of controllers | Count the controllers required by the game and account for any Bluetooth audio accessory. | Apple TV supports up to four Bluetooth game controllers, or one when Bluetooth audio is also in use. |
| Accessibility | Consider whether an Adaptive Controller or custom profile better matches the player’s needs. | Xbox Adaptive Controllers are in Apple’s supported list, and Apple TV supports custom profiles and remapping. |
| Charging method | Check the controller maker’s charging connector, cable requirements, and charging routine. | Charging details are not stated in Apple’s Apple TV setup documentation. |
| Price and availability | Check the current retailer listing for your country and verify the exact Bluetooth model. | Apple’s support pages do not state current prices or regional stock. |
| Latency, battery life, and game-by-game behavior | Look for current, model-specific testing if those factors determine your purchase. | No independent latency, battery-life, or value rankings are established by Apple’s setup documentation. |
A practical choice is therefore the supported controller whose layout and accessibility features suit the player, whose exact model is confirmed to have Bluetooth, and whose charging and availability fit your situation. Compatibility alone does not tell you how a controller will feel in a particular game.
Recommended setup for a family or shared Apple TV
- Pair each controller individually and give each one a recognizable name in the Bluetooth list if Apple TV offers a naming option for that device.
- Use the identification vibration feature to match each on-screen entry with the correct physical controller.
- Create separate custom profiles only when a player needs remapped controls; leave the default mapping unchanged for everyone else.
- For cooperative assistance, connect both devices first and configure Buddy Controller with one primary and one secondary controller.
- Disconnect controllers that are not being used, especially before connecting Bluetooth audio or troubleshooting the available controller count.
What Apple TV does not promise
Support for a controller means Apple TV can pair with the listed category; it does not constitute a performance ranking. Apple’s published setup material does not establish which supported controller has the lowest input delay, longest battery life, best ergonomics, lowest price, or widest game compatibility. Those questions require current, model-specific testing and retailer information. Likewise, the “up to four” figure is a platform capacity, not a promise that every Apple TV game supports four local players.
