The reliable order is simple: connect the PS5 to your display, attach accessories to the correct USB port, connect the console to the network, then plug in AC power. Pair the first DualSense with a USB cable and the PS button; use the PS5’s Bluetooth Accessories menu for a second controller. SuperSpeed USB ports are required for USB extended storage and the HD Camera, while wireless-headset adapters can use any PS5 USB port. PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore use PlayStation Link USB adapters.
Set up the PS5 and accessories in the right order
Before turning the console on, place the PS5 where its vents are not blocked and identify the cables and adapters supplied with each accessory. Sony’s setup sequence is to connect the console to the display and make the accessory connections before plugging the AC power cord into an electricity supply. This avoids having to reach behind a powered console while adding storage, a camera, a headset adapter or another cable.

- Connect the PS5 to the television or monitor with the display cable.
- Connect accessories that need a physical connection. Use a SuperSpeed USB port for USB extended storage and the HD Camera, and use the front SuperSpeed USB-C port for PS VR2. A wireless-headset adapter can go into any PS5 USB port.
- Connect the AC power cord to the PS5 and then to the electricity supply.
- Turn on the display and select the input connected to the PS5.
- Turn on the PS5 and complete the on-screen setup.
- For network setup, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection.
PS5 consoles have four USB ports, but they do not all have the same speed. The port’s shape alone is not a sufficient reason to choose it: match the accessory to Sony’s stated port class and to the labels on your console. For a specialty peripheral with its own instructions, follow the manufacturer’s recommended port.

USB port guide: which accessory goes where
| Accessory or use | Required connection | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | SuperSpeed USB port | Connect the storage drive to a SuperSpeed port before formatting or moving games. |
| HD Camera | SuperSpeed USB port | Use a SuperSpeed port. A PlayStation Camera requires its adapter. |
| PS VR2 | Front SuperSpeed USB-C port | Connect the headset cable to the front SuperSpeed USB-C port. |
| Wireless-headset adapter | Any PS5 USB port | Insert the adapter, then power on and pair the headset. |
| Official specialty peripheral | Follow its model instructions | Use the port recommendation in that accessory’s manual. |
If a camera or storage drive is not detected, moving it to a SuperSpeed port is the first meaningful check. Do not assume that plugging it into a convenient slower port will provide the same result.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Pair the first DualSense controller
The first DualSense pairing is a wired operation. The controller does not become the console’s wireless controller merely because it is close to the PS5; it must first exchange pairing information over USB.
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with the included USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and for the player indicator to light. Those lights show that pairing has completed.
- Once the controller has enough battery, disconnect the cable for wireless play.
A DualSense can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. If you use the same controller with another PS5, repeat the USB-cable-and-PS-button procedure on that console. A controller that was previously paired elsewhere may appear not to respond wirelessly until it is paired again.
Charge a DualSense correctly
Connect the controller to the PS5 with the supplied cable or another cable that complies with USB standards. Sony warns that not every USB cable works properly, so a cable that fits the socket is not automatically suitable for data communication or charging.
Recommended Free Tools
- While the PS5 is in use, the controller slowly blinks orange while charging.
- The same slow orange blink appears when charging from the PS5 in rest mode.
- When charging is complete, the light bar turns off.
To charge while the PS5 is in rest mode, enable the console’s USB-power option in its power-saving settings first. Without power to USB ports during rest mode, a connected controller will not continue charging even though the cable is plugged in. If you need the controller ready for a later session, check that the console is actually entering rest mode rather than being fully shut down.

Pair a second DualSense wirelessly
You need one working controller to navigate the menus and the second controller in pairing mode.
- With controller 1, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- On controller 2, press and hold Create + PS at the same time.
- Keep holding until the second controller’s light bar begins to blink.
- On the PS5 screen, select the blinking controller from the Bluetooth accessory list.
- Follow the player-assignment prompt if the console displays one.
If the second controller does not appear, release and repeat the Create-plus-PS sequence, keeping the controller close to the console. If it still fails, connect it with a known-good USB-standard cable and press PS while the PS5 is on; this is also Sony’s recommended recovery step for a DualSense that will not pair.
Connect a wireless headset
Wireless headsets generally use a USB adapter rather than the DualSense’s Bluetooth pairing screen. Sony’s general sequence is to charge the headset with its supplied USB cable, insert the adapter into the PS5, power on the headset and wait for the headset indicator to become solid blue.
- Charge the headset with its supplied USB cable.
- Insert its wireless adapter into any PS5 USB port unless the model’s instructions specify another arrangement.
- Turn on the headset.
- Wait for the connection indicator to become solid blue.
- Play audio briefly and check that the headset, rather than the television, is producing sound.
If there is no connection, remove and firmly reseat the adapter, confirm that the headset has charge, then repeat the power-on and pairing sequence. A loose adapter can look like a software problem when the PS5 simply cannot establish the radio link.

Set up PULSE Elite with PlayStation Link
PULSE Elite uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Insert that adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port, press the headset’s PlayStation Link button and wait for both indicators to show the connected state.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Press the PlayStation Link button on the PULSE Elite headset.
- Wait for a solid blue indicator on the headset.
- Confirm that the adapter indicator is solid white.
The solid blue headset light and solid white adapter light are the useful completion checks. If either light does not reach that state, reseat the adapter, charge the headset and repeat the button press.
Set up PULSE Explore earbuds
PULSE Explore has a different physical sequence because the earbuds must first be in their charging case while the adapter is inserted.
- Place both earbuds in their charging case.
- Insert the PlayStation Link USB adapter into the PS5.
- Remove both earbuds from the case.
- Wait for the adapter indicator to turn solid white.
If the adapter does not show a solid white indicator, return both earbuds to the case, reseat the adapter and repeat the sequence. Also verify that the earbuds have charge; an uncharged earbud cannot complete the wireless connection.

Connect the HD Camera and PlayStation Camera
The HD Camera requires a SuperSpeed USB port. The older PlayStation Camera can also be used with its adapter, but the camera connection still belongs on a SuperSpeed port. If the camera is not recognized, move it from the current socket to a SuperSpeed USB port before changing settings or restarting the console.
Camera placement is separate from port selection: put it where the lens has a clear view of the seating position, then use the console’s camera setup screens to adjust framing. The supplied documentation for the exact camera model remains the authority for model-specific menus.
Connect USB extended storage
USB extended storage must use a SuperSpeed USB port. Connect the drive directly to the PS5 rather than diagnosing a recognition problem through a slower port first. After the console detects the drive, follow the on-screen formatting process; formatting changes the drive’s contents, so copy off anything you need before confirming.

Use the PS5’s accessory manuals when the model differs
PlayStation accessory documentation covers the DualSense Charging Station, HD Camera, Media Remote, Disc Drive, Vertical Stand, PlayStation Link USB Adapter, PULSE Elite wireless charging hanger and other PS5 accessories. Use the manual for the exact model when its buttons, indicators, cable or menu differs from the general procedure above.
The on-console User’s Guide is also the right reference for menu wording that may change with system software, while the accessory manual covers model-specific firmware behavior and regional power details. There is no single universal instruction for every PS5 revision and every accessory.
Troubleshoot pairing, charging and recognition problems
DualSense will not pair
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the controller with a known-good USB cable that complies with USB standards.
- Press the PS button.
- Look for the blinking light bar and player indicator.
If this restores the connection, the original issue was likely the cable, an old pairing state or an unpowered console rather than a failed controller. Remember that moving between PS5 consoles requires pairing again.

- Try the included cable or another USB-standard cable; some cables do not function correctly.
- Confirm that the PS5 is on if you expect immediate charging.
- If the console is in rest mode, enable USB power in the PS5’s power-saving settings.
- Look for the slow orange blink, then wait for the light bar to turn off when charging completes.
The camera or storage device is not recognized
Move the device to a SuperSpeed USB port first. This is the key compatibility distinction for both the HD Camera and USB extended storage. Check the cable and, for a PlayStation Camera, confirm that its required adapter is installed.
The headset or earbuds will not connect
- Charge the headset or earbuds with the supplied cable or charging case.
- Remove and reseat the PlayStation Link or wireless-headset adapter.
- Repeat the exact model sequence: PULSE Elite requires the headset’s PlayStation Link button; PULSE Explore requires both earbuds to start in the case before the adapter is inserted.
- Wait for the model’s completion indicator: solid blue on PULSE Elite’s headset and solid white on its adapter; solid white on the PULSE Explore adapter.
An accessory works in one socket but not another
That result usually reflects the PS5’s mixed USB-port speeds rather than a defective accessory. Keep storage and camera devices on SuperSpeed ports. Headset adapters have more flexibility and can use any PS5 USB port, subject to the exact model’s instructions.
Choose the connection method before buying or rearranging accessories
| Accessory type | Connection method | Port or adapter requirement | Charging method |
|---|---|---|---|
| DualSense controller | USB for first pairing; wireless after pairing | USB cable for pairing and charging | PS5 USB power, including rest mode when enabled |
| Second DualSense | Bluetooth pairing through PS5 menu | Create + PS pairing mode; controller 1 navigates | USB cable and PS5 USB power |
| HD Camera | USB | SuperSpeed USB port | Powered through USB |
| USB extended storage | USB | SuperSpeed USB port | Powered through its USB connection |
| PULSE Elite | PlayStation Link | Included adapter in a PS5 USB Type-A port | Supplied USB cable or the model’s charging accessory |
| PULSE Explore | PlayStation Link | Included adapter; earbuds begin in charging case | Charging case |
| General wireless headset | Wireless adapter | Adapter can use any PS5 USB port unless the model says otherwise | Supplied USB cable |
The practical decision is not simply wired versus wireless. Check whether the accessory needs a SuperSpeed port, a USB Type-A adapter, a PlayStation Link adapter, a charging case or a data-capable USB cable. Those requirements determine which devices can remain connected at the same time.
What the indicator lights tell you
- DualSense: a blinking light bar during first pairing and a player indicator after pairing; slow orange blinking while charging; light bar off when charging is complete.
- PULSE Elite: solid blue headset indicator and solid white adapter indicator after a successful PlayStation Link connection.
- PULSE Explore: solid white indicator on the adapter after both earbuds are removed from the case following adapter insertion.
Indicators are useful because they separate power, charging and pairing states. A light that never reaches the expected final state points you toward the cable, USB port, adapter seating or model-specific sequence before you change unrelated PS5 settings.
