How to connect an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller to Xbox, PC, Android, and iPhone

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 controller connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through Xbox Wireless or the included 9-foot USB-C cable. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, you can use Bluetooth, USB-C, or a separately sold Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Android phones and iPhones can pair over Bluetooth when the device and operating-system version are supported. The Xbox Accessories app for Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11 handles profiles, button mapping, and related setup; it is not documented as a phone app for customizing the controller.

Before pairing, charge the controller, decide whether you need wireless convenience or wired reliability, and check that the game supports controllers. Its internal rechargeable battery is rated for up to 40 hours per charge, although Xbox says actual runtime varies with use and other factors.

Check compatibility before pairing

Xbox lists the Elite Series 2 as compatible with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles. It also supports Bluetooth connections to Windows PCs, Android devices, and iOS devices, subject to the phone, tablet, computer, and operating-system version meeting Microsoft’s supported-device requirements. If a phone can see the controller but a game cannot use it, the game itself may not support controllers even though the Bluetooth connection succeeded.

Device Wireless method USB-C method Xbox Accessories app
Xbox Series X|S Xbox Wireless Included 9-foot USB-C cable Available on the console
Xbox One Xbox Wireless Included 9-foot USB-C cable Available on the console
Windows 10/11 Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows Supported with a USB-C data connection Available on Windows 10/11
Windows 7/8.1 Not the documented wireless route USB-C is the required connection method; some functionality is unsupported Not documented for these versions
Android Bluetooth on supported devices and versions Not the documented phone method Phone customization is not documented
iPhone Bluetooth on supported devices and versions Not the documented phone method Phone customization is not documented

The controller has an internal rechargeable battery rated for up to 40 hours per charge. Xbox notes that actual battery life varies with use and other factors, so treat 40 hours as a maximum rating rather than a guaranteed runtime. Keep the included cable available for charging and for a wired connection when wireless setup is inconvenient.

Choose Bluetooth, USB-C, or Xbox Wireless Adapter

Your best connection depends on the device and whether you need the Xbox Accessories app.

Method Best use What you need Important limits
Bluetooth Wireless play on Windows 10/11, Android, and iPhone A compatible Bluetooth device and a charged controller Support depends on the device and operating-system version; games must also accept controllers
USB-C Reliable wired play, initial setup, or a computer without Bluetooth A USB-C cable that carries data; the included 9-foot cable is the documented option The cable must remain connected; a charge-only cable will not provide a controller data connection
Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows Wireless PC play when you want Xbox Wireless instead of Bluetooth The separately sold adapter and an available USB port It is a Windows accessory and is not needed for Bluetooth or console pairing
Xbox Wireless Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One An Xbox console with its Pair button This is the console’s wireless method; phones use Bluetooth instead

Bluetooth avoids a cable but depends on compatible hardware and software. USB-C is a wired link and the broadly dependable fallback for consoles and Windows, provided the cable carries data. The Xbox Wireless Adapter is optional: it is separately sold for Windows PCs and is useful when the computer lacks suitable Bluetooth or when you specifically prefer Xbox Wireless. No adapter is required for an Xbox console’s built-in Xbox Wireless connection.

If the included cable is missing or damaged, choose a replacement USB-C cable explicitly described as a data cable rather than a charge-only lead. Check current Microsoft or retailer listings for the adapter or replacement cable before buying; availability and prices can change.

Connect to Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One

Pair wirelessly with Xbox Wireless

  1. Turn on the Xbox console and the Elite Series 2 controller.
  2. Press the Pair button on the console.
  3. Within the pairing window, press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
  4. Wait for the Xbox logo to stop flashing and remain steadily lit.
  5. Open a game and move a stick or press a button to confirm input.

A flashing Xbox logo means the controller is searching; a steady light indicates that the wireless link has been established. If the console does not complete the pairing, use the wired procedure below rather than repeatedly pressing Pair.

Use the included USB-C cable

  1. Turn on the console and controller.
  2. Connect the controller to the console with the included 9-foot USB-C cable.
  3. Wait for the console to recognize the controller, then test it in a game.

Xbox documents USB-C as a console connection method, so it is also the practical recovery path when wireless pairing is unsuccessful or when you need to play immediately. Keep the controller powered on while reconnecting so the console can detect it promptly.

Connect to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC

Bluetooth pairing

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Turn on the controller.
  3. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  4. In Windows, choose the option to add a Bluetooth device, select the Bluetooth device category, and choose Xbox Elite Wireless Controller when it appears.
  5. Wait until the Xbox logo is steady.
  6. Test the controller in a controller-compatible game. You can also check it in Windows’ game-controller panel if a game does not respond.

Keep the controller close to the PC during discovery and do not select an old, saved entry if Windows shows more than one similarly named device. If the listing is present but the connection fails, remove the old entry and pair again while the controller’s logo is flashing.

USB-C wired connection

  1. Connect the controller to the PC with a USB-C data cable. The included cable is the documented option.
  2. Turn on the controller and allow Windows to install or use its controller driver.
  3. Start a controller-compatible game to test input.
  4. Open the Xbox Accessories app if you need profiles, button remapping, or firmware-related setup.

Use a cable that carries data, not one designed only for charging. If Windows does not react, disconnect and reconnect with the controller powered on, try another USB port, and test with a known data-capable cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows

  1. Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows into a USB port.
  2. Install any Windows software requested for the adapter.
  3. Press the Pair button on the adapter.
  4. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  5. Wait for the adapter and controller to link, then test the controller in a game.

The adapter is separately sold. You do not need it when your Windows 10/11 PC already supports Bluetooth and you are satisfied with Bluetooth play. It is also unnecessary when you are content to use the included USB-C cable.

Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

Xbox lists USB-C as the required connection method for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and notes that some functionality is unsupported on those operating systems. Connect the controller with the included USB-C data cable, let Windows load its controller support, and test it in the game. Do not assume that Bluetooth pairing or every Elite feature available on Windows 10/11 will work on these older versions.

Connect to Android

  1. Open Settings > Connected devices (or the phone’s Bluetooth settings) and enable Bluetooth.
  2. Turn on the Elite Series 2 controller.
  3. Press and hold the Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  4. Tap Xbox Elite Wireless Controller when it appears in the available-device list.
  5. Accept the pairing request if Android displays one.
  6. Wait for the Xbox logo to become steady, then launch a controller-compatible game and test the controls.

Xbox describes Android Bluetooth support as applying to selected devices and versions. Check the phone model, Android version, and the game’s controller requirements if the controller cannot be discovered, pairs but disconnects, or works in one game but not another. A phone’s ability to list the controller confirms Bluetooth discovery, not universal support in every app.

Connect to an iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Turn on the controller.
  3. Press and hold the Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
  4. Under Other Devices, tap Xbox Elite Wireless Controller.
  5. Wait for the Xbox logo to remain steadily lit.
  6. Open a game that supports controllers and verify stick, trigger, and button input.

iOS support is likewise limited to supported devices and versions. A successful Bluetooth pairing does not guarantee that every iPhone game exposes controller controls, so confirm support in the individual game’s documentation or settings. If the controller is listed but will not complete pairing, forget its old entry and repeat the process with the logo flashing.

Set up profiles and button mapping

The Xbox Accessories app is available on Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11. Use it on one of those platforms when you need to configure profiles, remap buttons, or perform the app’s related controller setup. The documented availability does not include Android or iPhone, so pairing the controller directly to a phone does not provide the same customization workflow.

  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Seamlessly connect and play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC with USB-C connectivity and Bluetooth wireless technology

On an Xbox console

  1. Connect and sign in with the controller.
  2. Open the Xbox Accessories app from the console.
  3. Select the Elite Series 2 controller.
  4. Open the profile or mapping controls, make the changes you need, and save the profile.

On Windows 10/11

  1. Connect the controller by Bluetooth or USB-C, or connect through the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
  2. Open the Xbox Accessories app in Windows.
  3. Select the controller and use its profile, mapping, and related setup controls.
  4. Apply the profile before launching the game you want to test.

USB-C is useful for this setup when Bluetooth discovery is unreliable. After configuration, you can return to the wireless method supported by your device. If you are using an older Windows 7 or 8.1 computer, Xbox does not document the same app availability or complete feature set, so use the wired connection and expect limitations.

Switch between Xbox, PC, and mobile devices

The Elite Series 2 is designed to switch among Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth device classes. If it does not automatically return to the device you want, pair it with that device again: put the controller into flashing-light pairing mode, open the target device’s Bluetooth or Xbox pairing screen, and select the controller. On a console, use the console’s Pair button; on a phone or PC, use the Bluetooth device list.

When troubleshooting a switch, turn off Bluetooth on the device you are not trying to use or remove the stale controller entry from that device’s saved list. This prevents the controller from reconnecting to the wrong host while you are attempting a new pairing. A steady Xbox logo confirms the active link; a flashing logo means the controller is still searching.

Troubleshoot pairing and connection failures

The controller appears but will not connect

  • In the device’s Bluetooth list, remove or forget the existing Xbox Elite Wireless Controller entry.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on, or restart the host device.
  • Turn the controller on and hold Pair until the Xbox logo flashes.
  • Start a fresh add-device search and select the controller when it appears.
  • Wait for a steady Xbox logo before opening a game.

Bluetooth is missing on the PC

Use the included USB-C data cable, or use the separately sold Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Bluetooth is not required for either of those methods. The adapter needs a USB port and may request Windows software during setup.

The controller works in one app but not a game

Confirm that the game supports controllers and that it is using the newly connected device. Pairing only establishes the device link; it does not add controller support to software that lacks it. Test another controller-compatible game or Windows’ game-controller panel to separate a connection problem from an in-game compatibility problem.

The Xbox Accessories app cannot customize the controller on a phone

Use the app on an Xbox console or a Windows 10/11 PC instead. Those are the platforms for which Xbox documents profiles and button-mapping support. Bluetooth pairing to Android or iPhone does not install the console or Windows customization tools on the phone.

The phone is not compatible

Xbox qualifies Android and iOS Bluetooth support by device and version. Check the phone model and operating-system version, install available system updates, and verify that the game supports controllers. If the phone still does not discover the controller, its hardware or software combination may not be among the supported configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wired connection does not work

  • Confirm that the USB-C cable carries data; a charge-only cable cannot provide controller input.
  • Reconnect with the controller powered on.
  • Try another USB port on the console or PC.
  • Use the included cable or another known data-capable USB-C cable.
  • On Windows, allow the operating system to install or use its controller driver before launching the game.

The controller keeps connecting to the wrong device

Disable Bluetooth on the unwanted host or remove its saved controller entry, then put the controller into flashing-light pairing mode and pair it with the intended console, PC, Android device, or iPhone. Repeating the pairing process with the correct host selected is more reliable than waiting for an automatic switch.

Which connection should you use?

  • Xbox console: use Xbox Wireless for normal cable-free play; use the included USB-C cable when pairing fails or you want a wired connection.
  • Windows 10/11 with Bluetooth: use Bluetooth for convenience, then open Xbox Accessories when you need profiles or remapping.
  • Windows PC without Bluetooth: use USB-C or add the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
  • Windows 7/8.1: use USB-C and expect some unsupported functionality.
  • Android or iPhone: use Bluetooth, but verify that the device, operating-system version, and game are supported.

Once paired, a steady Xbox logo confirms the active connection. If wireless setup fails, USB-C is the documented cross-platform fallback for Xbox consoles and Windows, while mobile devices rely on Bluetooth support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the Xbox Wireless Adapter to connect the Elite Series 2 to a PC?

Can the Elite Series 2 connect to a phone?

Yes, Xbox confirms Bluetooth connections for supported Android and iOS devices and versions. Pair it from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then confirm that the individual game supports controllers.

Can I customize the controller on Android or iPhone?

Xbox documents the Xbox Accessories app for Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11, not phones. Configure profiles and button mapping on one of those supported platforms.

What cable do I need for a wired connection?

Use the included 9-foot USB-C cable or another USB-C cable that carries data. A charge-only cable cannot transmit controller input.

Does Bluetooth pairing guarantee that a mobile game will work?

No. Bluetooth support and game support are separate. A phone may pair successfully while a particular game does not accept controller input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does the battery last?

Xbox rates the internal rechargeable battery for up to 40 hours per charge. Actual life varies with use and other factors, so runtime can be lower.

Can I use the controller on Windows 7 or 8.1?

Xbox lists USB-C as the required connection method for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and notes that some functionality is unsupported. Do not assume the Windows 10/11 Bluetooth and app experience applies.

The Bottom Line

Use Xbox Wireless on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, Bluetooth on supported Windows 10/11, Android, and iPhone devices, and USB-C when you want the most dependable wired connection. The Xbox Wireless Adapter is an optional, separately sold Windows solution. For profiles and button mapping, use Xbox Accessories on an Xbox console or Windows 10/11 PC; always verify phone, operating-system, and game compatibility before troubleshooting further.
