Yes. The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) can use an external GPU through its USB4 Type-C port. ASUS’s officially documented option is the 2025 ROG XG Mobile. Update the Ally X to BIOS 306 or later, connect the XG Mobile’s Thunderbolt cable to the handheld’s USB4 port, power the XG Mobile from AC, and allow Windows and ASUS software to finish device setup.
The Ally X has two USB-C ports, but only one is the documented USB4 eGPU connection. The other is USB 3.2 Gen 2. The published specifications do not list OCuLink, and compatibility with independent USB4, Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 enclosures is model-specific rather than guaranteed.

What you need before connecting an eGPU
Use the following checklist before buying or plugging in hardware:
- A 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA.
- BIOS version 306 or later. ASUS lists this minimum for RC73XA with the 2025 ROG XG Mobile.
- A 2025 ROG XG Mobile for the officially documented route, or a third-party enclosure whose manufacturer explicitly supports USB4 or Thunderbolt eGPU operation on Windows.
- The XG Mobile’s supplied Thunderbolt cable, or a certified cable that meets the enclosure’s stated bandwidth and power requirements.
- AC power for the external GPU enclosure. The handheld’s battery or USB-C power alone is not a substitute for the XG Mobile’s power supply.
- Current Windows, chipset, ASUS Armoury Crate and graphics-driver software as requested by the hardware and its firmware.
- A monitor connected to the eGPU’s video output when practical, especially for demanding games.
Do not assume that any USB-C port, dock or graphics card will work simply because it has a USB-C plug. The data mode, firmware, power supply, cable and driver support all matter.

Which USB-C port should you use?
| Ally X port | Published capability | Use for an external GPU? |
|---|---|---|
| USB4 Type-C | USB4; Thunderbolt 4 compliant; DisplayPort 1.4 with FreeSync support; Power Delivery 3.0 | Yes. This is the documented eGPU port. |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C | USB 3.2 Gen 2; DisplayPort; Power Delivery | Not the documented USB4 eGPU route. |
Connect the XG Mobile or another compatible enclosure to the USB4 Type-C port. The presence of DisplayPort and Power Delivery on the second connector does not make it equivalent: ASUS identifies only the USB4 connector for this external-GPU compatibility path.
Official method: connect the 2025 ROG XG Mobile
ASUS’s compatibility table names the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA), USB4 and BIOS 306 for the 2025 XG Mobile. Follow this sequence so firmware and drivers are in place before Windows has to initialize the GPU.
1. Check and update the BIOS
- In Windows, open Settings and go to System > About to confirm that the handheld is the RC73XA model.
- Open the Ally X’s ASUS update utility or ASUS support software and check the installed BIOS version.
- Install BIOS 306 or a later release. Keep the handheld connected to reliable power, do not close the lid or interrupt the update, and wait for the automatic restart to finish.
- After Windows starts again, verify that the new BIOS version is shown before connecting the XG Mobile.
BIOS 306 is a compatibility minimum in ASUS’s XG Mobile table, not a claim that every later BIOS behaves identically. If a future firmware release changes the connection process, follow the current on-screen instructions for that release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Shut down unnecessary GPU workloads
Save open work and close games, video editors, 3D applications and monitoring tools. An external GPU can be detected while Windows is running, but starting from a quiet desktop makes driver hand-off and troubleshooting easier.
3. Connect the cable to the correct port
Insert the XG Mobile’s Thunderbolt cable into the Ally X’s USB4 Type-C port. Push the connector fully home without forcing it. Do not use the other USB-C socket for this procedure.
4. Power the XG Mobile
Connect the XG Mobile to its AC adapter and switch it on if its model has a power control. Wait for its status indicators and for Windows to enumerate the device. The external GPU enclosure must have its own power source; the handheld cannot supply the power needed by a high-performance desktop-class GPU through the data cable.
5. Complete ASUS and graphics-driver setup
Allow Armoury Crate, Windows and the graphics driver to display their prompts. Depending on the XG Mobile firmware, installed GPU and Windows build, the exact order of chipset, Armoury Crate and graphics-driver prompts can change. Restart when requested instead of repeatedly unplugging and reconnecting the cable.

Once setup is complete, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters to confirm that the external GPU appears without a warning icon. The GPU vendor’s control panel should also identify the card. If it is not listed, use the troubleshooting section below before launching a game.
6. Connect the monitor and peripherals
For the best-defined display path, connect your gaming monitor directly to a video output on the XG Mobile. This lets the external GPU render and drive the monitor without sending frames back over the USB4 link to the Ally X’s built-in panel.
You can still use the handheld screen for some workloads, but the cited ASUS material does not publish a controlled performance comparison between the internal display and an external monitor. Treat the direct-monitor arrangement as an engineering best practice, not as a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
What GPU performance should you expect?
ASUS’s product FAQ advertises the ROG Xbox Ally X connecting to an ROG XG Mobile with performance of up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. “Up to” describes the XG Mobile product’s maximum configuration. It is not a promise that every XG Mobile, game, resolution or power setting will deliver RTX 5090-level frame rates.

Actual results depend on the GPU installed in the XG Mobile, the game engine, resolution, quality settings, frame-generation or upscaling options, CPU limits in the handheld, cooling, firmware and whether the monitor is attached directly to the eGPU. No independent benchmark for this exact Ally X/XG Mobile combination is established here, so do not use the advertised maximum as a universal performance figure.
Can a third-party USB4 or Thunderbolt enclosure work?
Technically, the Ally X’s USB4 port and Thunderbolt 4 compliance make USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 eGPU enclosures a plausible category. However, ASUS’s compatibility material specifically documents the 2025 XG Mobile; it does not certify every independent enclosure. A generic enclosure can fail even when its connector fits.
Check these specifications before buying
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Official RC73XA support | A connector alone does not prove handheld compatibility. | The enclosure maker’s current compatibility statement should mention USB4 or Thunderbolt eGPU use and Windows. |
| Interface mode | Some products use USB4, Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 with different firmware and fallback behavior. | Confirm the exact mode supported by the enclosure, cable and Ally X. |
| GPU support | Enclosures differ in card length, thickness, cooling and driver expectations. | Check the supported desktop or mobile GPU list, physical clearance and operating-system requirements. |
| Power supply | A high-power card can exceed a small enclosure’s capacity. | Check the enclosure’s wattage, auxiliary PCIe connectors and whether a power supply is included. |
| Cable quality and length | Marginal cables can cause enumeration drops, black screens or unstable links. | Use the cable specified or certified by the enclosure manufacturer. |
| Firmware and driver process | USB4 and graphics firmware updates can affect detection. | Read the current update instructions and required reboot or hot-plug sequence. |
| Video outputs | Ports on the enclosure determine how you connect a monitor. | Confirm the required HDMI or DisplayPort standard and number of outputs. |
| Warranty and support | Multi-vendor troubleshooting can leave responsibility unclear. | Check whether the enclosure maker supports the RC73XA and the chosen GPU together. |
Buy only when the exact enclosure model, firmware and GPU combination is documented or supported by the manufacturer. “USB-C,” “USB4-ready” or “Thunderbolt-compatible” printed on a retail listing is not, by itself, an eGPU certification.
What about Thunderbolt 5 eGPU docks?
Do not treat Thunderbolt 5 support as universal on the Ally X. ASUS states that Thunderbolt 5 devices are backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4, and lists the 2025 XG Mobile as supported. That backward-compatibility statement describes the standard; it does not certify every third-party Thunderbolt 5 dock, enclosure, firmware revision or graphics card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Anecdotal reports in an ASUS forum describe incompatibility with some third-party Thunderbolt 5 eGPU docks. Those reports are not a controlled benchmark or a universal rule, but they are a reason to verify the exact model’s compatibility notes, firmware requirements and return policy. If the manufacturer does not explicitly explain operation with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 hosts such as the RC73XA, choose a documented alternative rather than assuming the link will negotiate correctly.
Does the Ally X have OCuLink?
No native OCuLink port is listed in the Ally X’s published specifications. The documented external-GPU connection is USB4 over the USB4 Type-C connector. An adapter or dock that exposes OCuLink would still need a supported upstream connection and appropriate firmware; it would not turn the handheld into a device with a native OCuLink interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify that the eGPU is working
- With the enclosure powered, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. The external GPU should appear by its model name without a warning symbol.
- Open the installed GPU control panel and confirm that it reports the external card and its driver version.
- In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add a game or application and select the high-performance GPU option if Windows offers a choice.
- Launch a game with the monitor attached to the XG Mobile when possible. Select the monitor’s native resolution and a known graphics preset, then check that the game identifies the external GPU.
- If the display is connected to the handheld instead, expect the rendered frames to travel back over the USB4 link. A direct connection to the eGPU is simpler for diagnosis and avoids relying on that return path.
Troubleshooting connection failures
The XG Mobile is not detected
- Confirm the handheld is RC73XA and BIOS 306 or later.
- Move the cable to the USB4 Type-C port; the USB 3.2 Gen 2 port is not the documented eGPU connector.
- Check that the XG Mobile is connected to AC power and fully switched on.
- Disconnect other high-bandwidth docks temporarily, reboot Windows, and reconnect the XG Mobile after reaching the desktop.
- Install pending Armoury Crate, chipset, Windows and graphics-driver updates, then restart.
- Test the manufacturer-supplied or certified cable. A charge-only or marginal USB-C cable cannot provide a reliable eGPU link.
Windows shows an error or warning icon
Note the exact error in Device Manager, then reinstall or update the graphics driver recommended for the GPU and current XG Mobile firmware. Avoid mixing several driver packages at once. If the problem began after a firmware update, check the enclosure maker’s rollback or recovery instructions before repeatedly hot-plugging it.
The monitor stays black
- Verify that the monitor cable is connected to an output on the XG Mobile, not an unused port or an output that the installed GPU does not support.
- Select the monitor’s input manually and test a different output or cable.
- Restart with the monitor already connected and the XG Mobile powered.
- Check whether Windows detects the monitor under Settings > System > Display.
- If the internal panel works but the external monitor does not, the issue is more likely the monitor path, cable, output selection or GPU driver than the Ally X’s USB4 connection.
Games still use the integrated GPU
Connect the display directly to the eGPU, set the game to high performance in Windows Graphics settings, and check the game’s own graphics-adapter selection. Some launchers must be closed and reopened after the eGPU appears. A game can also be CPU-limited, so detecting the external GPU does not guarantee a particular frame rate.

The connection drops while gaming
- Ensure the cable is not strained, sharply bent or loose.
- Use the enclosure’s specified cable length and rating.
- Check AC power, enclosure temperature and GPU auxiliary power connectors.
- Update enclosure firmware, BIOS and graphics drivers using the vendor’s documented order.
- Remove other USB4 or Thunderbolt devices temporarily to identify a bandwidth, power or firmware conflict.
How to disconnect safely
Do not simply pull the cable while a game or GPU-accelerated application is active. Save work, close applications using the external GPU, and use the Windows or ASUS safe-disconnect control when it reports that the device can be removed. Wait for the enclosure’s status indication before unplugging or switching it off. If no safe-disconnect option appears, close all GPU workloads and shut down Windows before removing the cable; this is safer than forcing a live disconnect.
Choosing between the supported XG Mobile and a generic enclosure
| Decision factor | 2025 ROG XG Mobile | Third-party USB4 or Thunderbolt enclosure |
|---|---|---|
| RC73XA certification | Listed by ASUS for the 2025 Ally X at BIOS 306 or later. | Must be verified for the exact model; not certified by the cited ASUS material. |
| GPU configuration | ASUS advertises configurations up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. | Depends on enclosure clearance, power supply, cooling and supported card list. |
| Setup responsibility | Uses ASUS hardware and ASUS software prompts, although firmware and Windows can change the sequence. | You must coordinate enclosure, GPU, cable, firmware and driver support from multiple vendors. |
| Thunderbolt 5 assumption | ASUS lists the 2025 XG Mobile as supported and describes backward compatibility. | Never assume compatibility; some third-party docks have reported issues. |
| Best use case | Lowest compatibility uncertainty for an Ally X owner who wants the documented route. | Potentially broader GPU choice or enclosure flexibility when exact support is confirmed. |
The supported option is the straightforward choice when predictable setup matters more than selecting a separate desktop graphics card. A generic enclosure can be sensible when its manufacturer explicitly supports the RC73XA, but the lower purchase price or newer interface label is not proof of better results.
