A manual typewriter cannot send keystrokes to a computer or phone by itself. To type on a device using your existing machine, you need a compatible conversion kit that adds a USB or Bluetooth keyboard interface. If you instead want your computer to print through an electronic typewriter, that is a separate, model-specific connection.

Use a manual typewriter as a computer or phone keyboard
The USB Typewriter conversion kit maker describes its kit as adding USB and Bluetooth keyboard functionality to compatible manual typewriters. Compatibility and installation details below are manufacturer claims, not independently tested results.

- Identify your make and model. Check the maker’s current compatibility information before ordering. USB Typewriter says its kit fits most portable manual typewriters and some desktop models, but not every machine; it specifically excludes the IBM Selectric.
- Choose the connection mode. The maker describes its Bluetooth USB conversion kit as offering USB and Bluetooth. Choose according to the receiving device and whether you want a cable or wireless pairing.
- Gather the tools specified for that kit. USB Typewriter lists a flat-head screwdriver, high-temperature glue gun, 80-grit sandpaper or emery board, and wire strippers. The maker says its kit is pre-assembled and does not require soldering; consult its current instructions in case requirements change.
- Install the kit using the instructions for your exact machine. Fit and sensor placement can vary by model, so a generic installation description would not apply to every typewriter. Follow the maker’s installation steps rather than assuming the same arrangement works for all machines.
- Connect by USB or prepare for Bluetooth pairing. For USB, connect the converted typewriter to a supported computer or USB-host device and select USB mode if the kit requires it. For a phone or tablet, USB may require USB-OTG support or another suitable host connection; Bluetooth is the maker’s suggested alternative when USB-OTG is unavailable.
- Pair over Bluetooth when using wireless mode. Put the typewriter into Bluetooth mode, open Bluetooth settings on the receiving device, find the typewriter’s listed name, and pair it as a keyboard. USB Typewriter’s tablet guidance says to look for a name such as “USB Typewriter XXXX” and tap it.
- Test in a text-entry app. Open a text editor or another app with a text field and try a few keys. A converted typewriter acts as a keyboard: input goes to the currently active app, rather than to a word processor built into the typewriter.
Connect a typewriter to a phone or tablet
For mobile use, the main choice is between a wired USB host connection and Bluetooth. USB Typewriter says certain wired mobile connections require USB-OTG support and recommends Bluetooth for devices without it. The maker describes Bluetooth pairing as similar to pairing a regular Bluetooth keyboard.

If you want the typewriter to print computer documents
Sending keystrokes from a manual typewriter to a computer and printing computer text on an electronic typewriter are different jobs. Before buying a cable, check the electronic typewriter’s manual and ports for an explicit computer or printer interface. A USB-to-parallel cable cannot create an interface that the machine does not have.
A community-maintained Panasonic interface project describes printing through the interface port on certain Panasonic KX-R, RK-T, KX-W, and related devices, with emulation of named interface adapters. The project also identifies some emulation work as in development. This is limited to its documented device scope and is not Panasonic support or evidence of a universal adapter for other brands.

- Check whether the manual documents computer printing and identify the required host software and adapter.
- Verify that any model-specific project or adapter supports your exact machine before purchasing cables or accessories.
When a conversion kit is not the right fit
If your goal is only a typewriter-inspired look, a modern typewriter-style keyboard may be simpler. It is a separate keyboard for modern devices, not a way to connect an existing manual typewriter. One vendor advertises USB-C and wireless variants; check that vendor’s current specifications for the model you are considering.

If you want to retain paper typing and also capture text, USB Typewriter describes SD-card functionality for some converted models and configurations. That is a separate mode from sending keystrokes to a computer or phone, and features should be checked against the exact kit and machine.
